Halo Infinite Ranked matchmaking prioritizes your visible Competitive Skill Rank (CSR), rather than matching purely on hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR). MMR has not been removed: Halo says it remains part of the underlying skill system. The change was announced with Season 3 on February 28, 2023, to make the rank players see more closely reflect what the matchmaking system uses.
What CSR-based matchmaking means
CSR is your visible progress through Ranked. MMR is a hidden skill estimate used by the game. In its Season 3 explanation, Halo said Ranked teams would match based on players’ CSR instead of relying purely on MMR. It also said the system would continue to know players’ MMR, which remains tied to CSR. Halo’s explanation of Season 3 matchmaking describes the intended shift as matching players on what they had accomplished in the ranked system.
The goal was to make the relationship between displayed rank and opponents clearer, and to encourage matches that feel more focused on winning than individual performance. That was the developer’s stated expectation, not a guarantee that every match will be balanced or that every player will experience matchmaking the same way. Halo has not published a current technical explanation detailing every setting in the matchmaking algorithm.
Why your opponents’ ranks may look different after a reset
A rank reset can leave returning players at a lower CSR than the rank they reached before. Halo’s Season 3 explanation said Diamond 4 was the highest placement at that time, meaning players who wanted to reach Onyx again had to climb through Diamond. A player’s post-reset visible rank therefore may not immediately show their previous peak.

Resets and playlist rotations continue on a schedule, but the dates can change. Halo Support’s playlist page, updated August 25, 2026, lists ongoing ranked playlists and rotation dates, and warns that the schedule is subject to change. It records a July 7, 2026 reset and a November 3, 2026 planned reset; check the current Halo Infinite multiplayer playlists page for the live schedule.
Party rules and CSR changes
Ranked party restrictions and CSR payouts have changed over time, so older explanations may not describe the current rules. Halo’s 2025 Ranked Update set a 1700 CSR threshold for solo/duo searching and described deterministic payouts at or above that level: +7 CSR for a win and −7 for a loss. The update said upwards of 95% of Ranked Arena players searched solo or duo; that figure described player behavior at the time of publication, not necessarily current behavior. See the Ranked Update for its original context.
Rank #2
Later Operation: Infinite ranked information says parties of three or four may play when their members fall within the player’s skill range. That later rule means the 1700 CSR solo/duo threshold should not be treated as a complete statement of every current party restriction. For the applicable playlist and latest rules, consult Halo’s Operation: Infinite ranked update and live playlist information.
Halo has also described adjusting matchmaking CSR for larger fireteams when party sizes are imbalanced, to account for the coordination, teamwork, and communication advantage that a party may have over a team of solo players. The details are in the Ranked Arena party matching update.

Halo Support’s playlist page lists Ranked Arena, Ranked Doubles, and Ranked Slayer as continuing playlists, alongside scheduled rotations. The schedule is subject to change, so use the official page for current availability rather than relying on an old rotation date.
The deterministic +7/−7 CSR rule also has an earlier history: Content Update 31 described an experimental version for players at 1800 CSR or higher. The 2025 Ranked Update later lowered the threshold to 1700 CSR. The older threshold is not the current figure described by that later update; Halo’s Content Update 31 patch notes provide the earlier context.
