There is no single required way to begin Halo. For the original Master Chief story, play Halo: The Master Chief Collection; for the original campaign in a modern remake, start with Halo: Campaign Evolved, released July 28, 2026. Prefer lore in prose? Begin with Halo: The Fall of Reach. If you mainly want multiplayer, Halo Infinite offers a free-to-play option.

Which Halo should you start with?

Pick the entry point that matches what you want to do. The official Halo catalogue includes several games, while Halo’s official book guide groups novels by era and connection to the games; neither establishes one mandatory order for every player or reader. Xbox’s Halo catalogue and the Official Halo Book Guide provide useful starting points.

If you want to… Start with… What it offers
Play several older Master Chief games in one package Halo: The Master Chief Collection Xbox describes it as one integrated experience containing six games, for PC and Xbox One.
Play the original campaign as a modern remake Halo: Campaign Evolved A remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, released July 28, 2026. It is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5.
Try current multiplayer Halo Infinite Its multiplayer experience is free-to-play. Check the current platform storefront for availability and details.
Read about Master Chief and the early conflict Halo: The Fall of Reach A novel about Master Chief’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, and events preceding the discovery of Halo.
Read stories from different periods of the universe Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One A collection of more than thirty short stories, listed in paperback, ebook, and unabridged audiobook formats.

Where to begin with the games

The Master Chief Collection: a multi-game starting point

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the clearest option if you want several earlier Master Chief games together. Xbox describes the collection as six games in one integrated experience for PC and Xbox One. That makes it a practical way to explore multiple campaigns without choosing a single older installment first. Its six-game description refers to the collection, not to every Halo game released.

Campaign Evolved: revisit the original story

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a modern remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. It launched globally on July 28, 2026, and is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5, according to Xbox’s launch announcement and Halo Support’s release notes. It suits someone who wants to experience the original campaign through the remake rather than start with a collection of older releases.

Physical editions are sold through select retailers worldwide, but the physical format is platform-specific. Xbox’s Collector’s Edition announcement describes a game disc for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, while the Steam edition includes a code. Check the edition and platform before buying; a physical copy should not be assumed to work across platforms. Availability varies by retailer.

Halo Infinite: a multiplayer-first option

Halo Infinite pairs a campaign with free-to-play multiplayer, as described on Xbox’s game page. It is a suitable starting point if your main interest is multiplayer rather than playing the earlier campaigns in sequence. Halo Support’s May 5, 2026 update notes the addition of Firefight: Gauntlet, a four-player cooperative mode; that dated update is an example of support activity, not a promise about future update frequency. See the Halo Support hub for support information.

Where to start with Halo books

For Master Chief’s origins: The Fall of Reach

Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach was first released October 30, 2001, before Halo: Combat Evolved. It covers Master Chief’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, Reach, and events leading up to the discovery of Halo. Choose it if you want background on the Chief and the early conflict before or alongside playing the original game story.

For another angle on the first game: The Flood

William C. Dietz’s The Flood is a novelization of Halo: Combat Evolved that adds perspectives beyond the game’s central viewpoint. It is a companion to the first game’s story, rather than the only route into Halo’s fiction.

For what follows Combat Evolved: First Strike

Eric Nylund’s First Strike follows the events after Combat Evolved, as Master Chief and other survivors try to return to Earth. It is the natural next choice for readers who want to continue that early storyline.

For short fiction across the universe: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One

Jeff Easterling and Alexander Wakeford’s Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One collects more than thirty short stories from across Halo’s universe. The official guide lists its release date as May 26, 2026, and identifies trade paperback, ebook, and unabridged audiobook formats. Its varied stories make it an alternative to following one early-era sequence.

The official Halo book guide also organizes fiction by era and game connection. Readers drawn to other specific corners of the setting can use it to choose a book by subject rather than trying to read every novel in publication order.

What to know about older Halo online features

The shutdown of legacy Xbox 360 services does not apply to every Halo game. Xbox 360 Halo game servers were turned off on January 13, 2022. Those games remain playable, but online features such as challenges and file share are no longer available, according to Halo Support. Treat this as a limitation of the affected Xbox 360 titles, not as a statement about current games such as Halo Infinite.
