For longer unplugged play, start with Windows’ efficiency-focused power mode, a comfortable-but-lower screen brightness, and fewer background tasks. When a game needs more speed, switch toward performance or use your handheld maker’s game-specific controls—expect higher power use and potentially more heat. There is no universal setting or guaranteed number of extra hours: available controls and results vary by handheld, game, display, and firmware.
Start with the right power profile for the session
Windows power mode is a useful first adjustment, but its best setting depends on whether battery runtime or game performance matters more right now. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. The choices shown can depend on the device.

These modes sit at different ends of a trade-off, not a universal “best” setting. If you play both plugged in and on battery, use the more performance-oriented option for demanding plugged-in sessions and reassess when you unplug.
Reduce display power without making games unpleasant
Lower brightness first
Try reducing brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable in your room. The right level is personal, but a dimmer screen draws less power than a brighter one. Microsoft includes brightness among its battery-saving recommendations: Battery saving tips for Windows.

Consider a lower refresh rate
A lower refresh rate can reduce display power use, but motion may look less smooth. If your handheld exposes a refresh-rate control, try a lower setting in a game where the difference is acceptable; restore the higher rate when smoother motion matters more. Microsoft notes that higher refresh rates provide smoother motion but use more power: change the refresh rate in Windows.
Dynamic refresh rate may help balance smoothness and power on supported displays, but it is not available on every handheld. Check the Windows display options and your manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming the setting exists.
Use Energy saver when background activity can wait
Windows Energy saver dims the screen and limits background processes. It is worth considering when you want to prioritize battery runtime over background activity, such as syncing or other work happening outside the game. Open Settings > System > Power & battery and use the Energy saver controls available on your device; you may be able to turn it on manually or configure when it activates.

Because Energy saver restricts background activity, consider whether you need a launcher, download, update, or other task to keep running before enabling it.

Shorten screen-off and sleep delays
Set shorter screen-off and sleep timeouts for periods when the handheld is idle. These settings save power when you step away, rather than improving performance during active gameplay. Look under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep; the exact options depend on the device.
Review apps that start with the handheld
On handhelds using Microsoft’s Xbox full-screen experience, apps can be set to start at login, start only after switching to the desktop, or stay off. Microsoft says reducing startup activity can improve battery life and gaming performance, but that is not a promise of higher frame rates in a game already running. Use game-specific and manufacturer controls selectively
Set graphics preferences per app where available
Windows provides per-app graphics preferences on supported systems. They can be useful when a device exposes more than one graphics option, but availability and behavior vary by hardware. Use the settings for the individual game rather than changing a system-wide preference without a reason. Microsoft’s graphics performance preference instructions cover supported Windows systems.
Try a frame-rate cap when a game does not need maximum FPS
Manufacturer utilities may add controls that Windows’ general settings do not. ASUS says ROG Ally owners can set a game’s maximum frame rate—for example, 30 FPS—to save battery or get a more consistent experience in some games. That is ASUS-specific guidance, not a universal profile for every Windows handheld. Separate performance features from battery-saving switches
Windows 11’s optimizations for windowed games target compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. They enable newer presentation behavior and features on compatible systems; Microsoft does not present them as a general battery-life recommendation. A practical way to tune a handheld
- Identify your handheld model, check whether you are plugged in, and open both Windows Settings and the manufacturer’s utility. Vendor controls and available Windows options differ by device.
- For unplugged play, try an efficiency-oriented power mode and reduce brightness to a comfortable level.
- If the game still looks good at a lower refresh rate, try it. Use Energy saver when limiting background activity is acceptable.
- If performance is not sufficient, move toward a more performance-oriented Windows mode or adjust the game’s manufacturer-specific controls. Recheck warmth and battery drain after each change.
- Close or defer unnecessary startup apps, while leaving essential launchers and device utilities available when needed.
- Change one setting at a time and compare the same game and scene using the handheld’s battery indicator or monitoring tools. This helps you see which trade-off matters on your particular device.
Avoid copying a universal wattage, FPS, resolution, or battery profile from another handheld. The best balance depends on the game load, display, hardware, firmware, and manufacturer software.
What the ROG Ally example does—and does not—tell you
ASUS’s official specifications for the 2023 ROG Ally list Windows 11 Home and a 65 W USB-C PD 3.0 power supply: ROG Ally (2023) specifications. The figure describes that model’s listed power supply, not a universal charger requirement for Windows handhelds or a measure of battery-life improvement. The Ally’s frame-rate-cap advice is likewise a model-family example, not a setting every handheld offers.
