If Windows says hcnetsdk.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Hikvision-based application that produced the message rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The file is not a normal Windows component. It usually belongs to software for Hikvision cameras, DVRs, NVRs, access-control devices, or a third-party program that integrates Hikvision hardware. Hikvision clients such as iVMS-4200, SDK demonstrations, and surveillance applications may load it from their own application or SDK lib directory.

What the hcnetsdk.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because HCNetSDK.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hcnetsdk.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting hcnetsdk.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “hcnetsdk.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. They do not always prove that HCNetSDK.dll itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a companion or dependency required by the SDK is missing.

Windows normally treats uppercase and lowercase letters in filenames as equivalent, so hcnetsdk.dll and HCNetSDK.dll generally refer to the same file.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely fix because the application may have been incompletely installed, updated with mixed files, or damaged by cleanup software.
1. Identify the program
Read the complete error carefully and note the program named in its title bar. Also check which shortcut you used. It may be:
- A Hikvision client
- A camera, DVR, or NVR management program
- An access-control application
- An SDK demo
- A third-party security application
If the error appears after launching a game or unrelated utility, do not assume that program normally uses Hikvision software. Check the executable path before replacing anything.

Save your work, close the affected program, and restart Windows. A reboot can release a locked file after an incomplete update, but it will not restore a genuinely missing SDK.
3. Use the built-in repair option
On Windows 11:
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Hikvision-based application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options or Modify, depending on the installer.
- Select Repair when offered.
- Restart the program.
Some desktop applications show Modify or Repair in Control Panel instead:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the application.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
A successful repair normally restores HCNetSDK.dll and its companion files into the application directory. Test the same shortcut that originally failed.
4. Reinstall from the official source
If repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from Hikvision or the application developer that supplied it.
- Install it using the default folder unless the vendor specifies another location.
- Restart Windows once more.
- Launch the application.
For an SDK-based program, reinstall the complete SDK package rather than copying only HCNetSDK.dll. Hikvision SDK folders can include HCCore.dll, PlayCtrl.dll, HCNetSDKCom, OpenSSL components, and other media or rendering libraries. The files are designed to work as a package.
If reinstalling the latest available SDK breaks an older application, use the SDK release supplied with that application or specified by its developer. There is no single SDK version that is guaranteed to work with every program.

Fix 2: Match the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
Hikvision provides separate Windows SDK packages for 32-bit and 64-bit applications. A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit HCNetSDK.dll, and a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit replacement.
The architecture of Windows is not necessarily the architecture of the application. A 32-bit surveillance client can run on 64-bit Windows and still requires the 32-bit SDK.
Check the application architecture
The most reliable approach is to use the installer or documentation for the affected program. You can also inspect the program’s installation path:
C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.
These folder names are useful clues, not absolute proof.
Install the matching application or SDK package and keep its complete lib directory together. Do not combine a 32-bit HCNetSDK.dll with 64-bit companion files, or copy a file from another installation.
If the DLL is present but the error remains, architecture mismatch or a missing dependency is more likely than a missing filename.
Fix 3: Check the application folder and dependencies
Open the installation folder:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
HCNetSDK.dllnear the application executable or inside an SDKlibfolder.
Do not move the file if it is already in the vendor’s application directory. Windows commonly searches the application folder when resolving its DLLs. The SDK may also expect adjacent folders and companion libraries to remain in their original layout.
If the file exists but the error says “specified module could not be found,” reinstall the complete application or SDK first. A dependency such as a companion Hikvision library or runtime component may be missing.

Do not repeatedly copy the same DLL into the folder. That can hide the real missing dependency and create a mixture of files from different SDK releases.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate SDK file, especially after an application update or a change in detection rules.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry associated with the affected application or
HCNetSDK.dll. - Review the detected file path, publisher information, and detection name.
- Restore or allow the file only if the application came from a legitimate vendor source and the file path is expected.
If you are uncertain, do not restore the quarantined file. Remove the application and reinstall it from the official vendor source, then run a full security scan. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine.

If antivirus quarantines the freshly reinstalled file again, stop launching the program and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly disabling protection.
Fix 5: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime if required
Some builds of native SDK software depend on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries. The exact dependency varies by SDK release and application packaging.
Install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application vendor, dependency diagnostics, or the installer indicates that it is required.
- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the architecture required by the application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if the runtime is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Hikvision-based application.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows commonly needs the x86 redistributable. Installing only the x64 package does not satisfy every 32-bit program.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers
HCNetSDK.dll is an application SDK library, not a Windows device driver, so updating a camera or graphics driver will not normally replace it. Driver repair is relevant when the Hikvision application also fails to communicate with a capture device, network adapter, camera interface, or other hardware.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver first:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Cameras, Network adapters, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm only when you have a replacement driver available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Reconnect or restart the device if required.
If checking dozens of hardware vendors and guessing which driver is stale is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs the driver installation. This does not replace reinstalling the Hikvision application when HCNetSDK.dll itself is missing.
Fix 7: Repair wider Windows corruption
System repair commands are appropriate only when other Windows components are also failing. They generally cannot restore a third-party Hikvision SDK file.
First install pending Windows updates, restart, and then open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be treated as a source for HCNetSDK.dll. If the only failure concerns a Hikvision application, repair or reinstall that application instead.
What not to do
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that conflicts with the application’s companion libraries. Even a genuine file from another SDK release may not fix the loader error.
Use the official Hikvision application or SDK package, or the official installer supplied by the third-party program’s developer.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
System32 and SysWOW64 are not universal storage locations for third-party application libraries. Copying HCNetSDK.dll there can create conflicts, interfere with updates, and expose other programs to an unintended library.

Keep the DLL with the executable and its matching SDK files.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. HCNetSDK.dll is a native runtime and SDK library, not automatically a self-registering component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 HCNetSDK.dll
will usually not repair the application and may produce an entry-point error. Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor explicitly documents that a particular DLL must be registered.
If the error still remains
Record these details before contacting the application vendor:
- The exact error text
- The program and executable name
- The executable’s full path
- The path where
HCNetSDK.dllis located - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Any antivirus quarantine event
- Whether repair or a complete reinstall changed the message
If the DLL is present, the most useful next investigation is the application’s dependency chain and loader configuration. The file may be correct while HCCore.dll, HCNetSDKCom, a runtime library, or another architecture-specific dependency is missing.

Is hcnetsdk.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Hikvision’s Device Network SDK and applications that integrate Hikvision hardware.
Can I fix it by downloading the newest SDK?
Not necessarily. An existing application may require an older SDK build or a specific set of companion files. Install the package intended for that application and match its architecture.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the DLL is visible?
The named file may be present while one of its dependencies is absent, incompatible, or located outside the expected search path.
Will SFC restore hcnetsdk.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while HCNetSDK.dll is a third-party application library.

Only after verifying the program’s source, the file path, and the detection. When there is any doubt, reinstall the complete application from its official source instead.
Does System32 contain the correct copy?
It should not be treated as the expected location. The correct copy normally stays beside the owning application or inside its complete SDK directory.
