“The code execution cannot proceed because lxa2wia.dll was not found.”
If Windows reports that lxa2wia.dll is missing, cannot load, or is not designed to run on Windows, the problem usually involves an incomplete Lexmark printer or scanner driver installation.
lxa2wia.dll is associated with Lexmark’s WIA Microdriver DLL. WIA, or Windows Image Acquisition, is the Windows imaging framework used by scanner and multifunction-printer software. The safest repair is to identify the Lexmark device that installed the file and reinstall its complete driver package.

Microsoft describes WIA microdrivers as vendor-provided DLLs that work with the Windows WIA Flatbed Driver to implement device-specific scanner behavior. They are exported DLLs, not ordinary COM components that normally require regsvr32.
The exact Lexmark model that uses lxa2wia.dll cannot be identified from the filename alone. Check:
- Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps
- The original Lexmark printer or scanner packaging
- The application named in the error message

Do not assume that the file belongs in every Windows system directory. Its correct location depends on the Lexmark installer and the software configuration.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Lexmark driver
This is the primary repair. A proper installer restores the DLL together with its device definition, dependencies, services, registry entries, and scanning software.
- Write down the exact Lexmark printer or scanner model.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Note the System type, such as 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system.
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers and Downloads page.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select your Windows version and architecture when prompted.
- Download the full printer, scanner, or multifunction software package.
- Do not download an isolated DLL.
- If an old package is present, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Select the old Lexmark software and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Lexmark installer as administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Disconnect the USB device if the installer instructs you to do so.
- Reconnect or add the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart again if prompted.
Test the result by opening Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, or the Lexmark scanning application. Select the Lexmark device and start a preview or scan.
If the scanner works and the error no longer appears, the repair is complete. If the installer says the device is already installed, remove the old Lexmark device from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, restart, and run the installer again.

A partially removed Lexmark installation can leave a scanning application or startup component looking for lxa2wia.dll.
Remove the printer or scanner
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Lexmark device.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Remove Lexmark applications
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Uninstall the related scanning, printer, or device utility.
- Restart Windows.
If the error appears immediately after startup, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Select Startup apps and disable an obsolete Lexmark entry. Do not disable an entry merely because it contains a DLL name; confirm that it belongs to the removed Lexmark software.
You can also check Task Scheduler:
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks clearly belonging to an old Lexmark installation.
- Disable the task first.
- If the Lexmark software has been removed, delete the obsolete task.
Restart Windows. If the error disappears, the stale software was the consumer of the missing file. If you still need the device, reinstall its complete package instead of leaving the old entry disabled.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove a legitimate driver file, but a malicious replacement can also use the same filename. Do not restore the file automatically.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the event involving lxa2wia.dll.
- Expand the event and inspect its file path and detection details.
- Confirm that the path belongs to a known Lexmark installation.
- If the file is suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the driver from Lexmark’s official support site.
Restore the item only when it belongs to a known Lexmark package and Windows Security indicates that it is safe. Reinstalling the signed vendor package is preferable because it replaces the file and its associated driver components together.
Fix 4: Check for an architecture or version mismatch
A 32-bit DLL cannot be treated as interchangeable with a 64-bit driver component. Public records for this filename are inconsistent, so third-party version, size, and architecture listings should not be used as proof that a particular download is correct.

Use the package intended for:
- The exact Lexmark model
- Your installed Windows edition
- Your system architecture
- The scanning or printer software you actually use
To check architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
- Download the matching package from Lexmark.
Do not substitute similarly named files such as lxa1wia.dll, lxa3wia.dll, or lxa4wia.dll. They may belong to different devices or driver generations.
If Windows says that lxa2wia.dll is “not designed to run on Windows,” or reports that a procedure entry point cannot be found, a mixed version is more likely than a simple missing-file problem. Remove the old Lexmark software and reinstall one complete package.

Device Manager may repair the device entry, but it is not guaranteed to provide the complete Lexmark scanning application.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Lexmark device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the obsolete Lexmark package.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific package downloaded from Lexmark.
- Reconnect the device when instructed.
If Device Manager shows no Lexmark device, the hardware may be disconnected, powered off, or installed under another category. Device Manager cannot restore a missing scanner application by itself, so use the complete Lexmark installer.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged. They are not the primary repair for a missing third-party Lexmark driver.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It normally does not obtain a missing Lexmark driver from the internet. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source rather than copying lxa2wia.dll into System32.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the Lexmark application again. If SFC reports no integrity violations but the DLL error remains, return to the Lexmark driver reinstall.

Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may belong to another Lexmark driver generation.
- It may lack required dependencies.
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64can create a new mismatch. - The original Lexmark installer may still be missing its INF, registry entries, and device configuration.
The same warning applies to copying the file into an application folder. That is appropriate only when you have confirmed the original Lexmark installer placed it there and the application is legitimate.
regsvr32 lxa2wia.dll is also not a general repair command. WIA microdrivers are exported DLLs rather than ordinary COM registration libraries, so registration may fail or accomplish nothing. Reinstall the complete driver package instead.
What if no Lexmark hardware remains
If you no longer own or use the Lexmark printer or scanner, you do not need to restore the DLL merely to silence the message.
Uninstall the remaining Lexmark software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Then check Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler for obsolete Lexmark entries. Restart Windows and confirm that the error has stopped.
Do not delete arbitrary DLLs from Windows directories. Remove the program that requests the file.

- Keep the exact Lexmark model and driver package name.
- Download drivers from Lexmark’s official support site.
- Remove old Lexmark software before installing a replacement package.
- Do not mix files from different driver versions.
- Let Windows Security quarantine suspicious files.
- Avoid DLL-cleaner utilities and random DLL download sites.
- Create a restore point before replacing an older legacy driver.
- Keep a copy of the model-specific installer for older hardware.
