In Minecraft, a Heart of the Sea comes exclusively from a buried treasure chest. Find a buried-treasure map in a shipwreck or ocean ruin, follow its red X, and excavate the chest; every buried treasure chest contains exactly one Heart of the Sea. The item cannot be crafted, mined, traded, or farmed. Its only use is as the center ingredient in a conduit, which also requires eight nautilus shells. A conduit must then be placed underwater inside a prismarine-family frame before it provides any power.
How do you get a Heart of the Sea in Minecraft?
The reliable route has two separate stages: obtain a buried-treasure map, then locate the buried chest marked by that map. Shipwreck and ocean-ruin chests are sources of maps, but the Heart itself is in the buried treasure chest, not in the structure where you found the map.

| Approach | What it helps you find | What is guaranteed | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buried-treasure map | A specific treasure location shown by a red X | One Heart of the Sea in the buried chest | You must search a shipwreck or ocean ruin first, then excavate the marked site |
| Dolphin assistance | The nearest buried treasure, shipwreck, or ocean ruin | Only a destination, not a guaranteed buried-treasure chest | The dolphin may lead to a shipwreck or ocean ruin instead |
The buried chest is the decisive step. Minecraft Wiki records a 100% chance for a Heart of the Sea in every buried treasure chest, with the heart appearing as a stack of one.
Is the Heart of the Sea renewable?
No. The item is described as a non-renewable treasure item. You cannot make one at a crafting table, extract one by mining a block, buy one through trading, or produce one through a farm. Each new heart therefore requires another buried-treasure chest.

What should you bring before searching?
Treasure sites are frequently underwater or covered by blocks, so preparation prevents the most common failed expeditions. Bring a way to stay underwater and a tool for clearing the covering terrain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Water Breathing potion: gives sustained underwater breathing while you search and dig.
- Turtle shell: provides an underwater-breathing option when equipped.
- Respiration helmet: extends the time you can remain underwater.
- Doors in Java Edition: the acquisition guidance lists them as a possible temporary air source. Their use should be treated as Java-specific rather than a universal Bedrock instruction.
- Bubble columns: useful for creating a repeatable air route near a submerged excavation.
- Shovel or another suitable digging tool: treasure commonly has sand or gravel above it, although stone and other blocks can also cover the chest.
Carry spare blocks and a clear route back to the surface. A chest can generate on a beach, a snowy beach, or under the ocean, so the same map may require ordinary digging or a fully underwater operation.
How do you find a buried-treasure map?
- Locate a shipwreck or ocean ruin. Search its chests for a map that points to buried treasure. These structures are the documented sources for the map.
- Open the map and identify the red X. The X marks the treasure destination; it is not the location of the shipwreck or ruin where you obtained the map.
- Travel until your player marker reaches the X. Use the map position rather than guessing from the coastline. Keep your breathing supply ready if the marker leads into open water.
- Excavate a broad area around the mark. Start with sand and gravel, then check stone or other blocks if the chest is not immediately visible. Digging a small area instead of one single block is safer because terrain can obscure the exact chest position.
- Open the buried chest. Every buried treasure chest contains one Heart of the Sea. Take it before leaving, then secure the site so you can return for the rest of the loot.
Buried-treasure generation details, including chunk-position behavior and some loot-table details, differ between Java and Bedrock. Do not apply a coordinate rule from one edition to the other as if it were universal; the red-X search and excavation process works in both, but the exact underground placement can vary.
Can a dolphin lead you to a Heart of the Sea?
A dolphin can shorten the search for an ocean structure or treasure site, but it does not guarantee the item. Feed a dolphin raw cod or raw salmon, and it swims toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck, or ocean ruin. If it chooses a shipwreck or ruin, you still need to search that structure for a buried-treasure map and follow the map to obtain the heart.

How do you craft a conduit with a Heart of the Sea?
A conduit recipe uses one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells. Mojang’s recipe places the heart in the center of the crafting grid and surrounds it with the eight shells.
- Open a crafting table or another 3×3 crafting interface.
- Place the
heart_of_the_seain the center slot. - Place one nautilus shell in each of the eight surrounding slots.
- Collect the conduit from the output slot.
The recipe is shared by Java and Bedrock. A Heart of the Sea by itself has no second crafting role, so there is no benefit to spending it until you have, or can obtain, all eight shells.
How do you activate a conduit?
Crafting creates the conduit but does not activate it. Put the conduit underwater and build an activation frame from prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns. The acquisition guidance describes a minimum 5×5 ring arrangement; expanding the frame produces a stronger effective range. Use the current layout for your edition when assembling the frame.

Build the underwater structure
- Choose a submerged location. The conduit must be underwater, so an above-water display or dry room will not activate it.
- Place the conduit within the frame space. Leave room for the surrounding prismarine-family blocks rather than burying the conduit in ordinary stone, glass, or decorative blocks.
- Construct the minimum ring. Use the documented 5×5 ring arrangement as the starting frame, with valid prismarine-family blocks or sea lanterns.
- Complete or expand the frame. A more complete frame increases the conduit’s effective range. If the conduit remains inactive, check every frame block against the allowed material list and confirm that the entire assembly is submerged.
What does an activated conduit do?
An active conduit grants conduit power to players in range. That effect combines underwater breathing, underwater night vision, and underwater haste, making it easier to build, mine, and fight below the surface. It can also damage hostile mobs that are in contact with water.
The conduit is therefore an underwater base utility rather than a general-purpose combat weapon. Its mob-damage effect depends on the target being in water, while the frame determines how far the conduit’s player effects reach.
What is different between Java and Bedrock?
The core item and recipe are the same, but generation and reference details are not identical. Edition-specific digging advice matters most when you are trying to predict where a chest will be beneath the red X.
| Detail | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Item identifier | heart_of_the_sea |
heart_of_the_sea |
| Numeric item ID | Not stated in the cited references | 571 in the Bedrock reference table |
| Buried-treasure placement details | Edition-specific chunk and generation behavior | Edition-specific chunk and generation behavior |
| Conduit recipe | One heart surrounded by eight nautilus shells | One heart surrounded by eight nautilus shells |
| Listed air aid | Doors are included among possible underwater aids | Use the edition-appropriate breathing method; the cited door guidance is Java-specific |
When following a coordinate-focused treasure guide, verify that it names your edition and current game version. The item name and recipe do not change the need to excavate the actual buried chest.

What can go wrong while looking for the heart?
You found the X but no chest
Expand the excavation instead of stopping at the first block. Treasure may be under sand, gravel, stone, or other terrain, and an underwater site can hide the chest behind a wider layer than expected. Check around and below the marked area while maintaining an air supply.
A dolphin led you somewhere with no heart
The dolphin may have selected a shipwreck or ocean ruin. Search that structure for a buried-treasure map, then use the map’s red X to locate the chest that guarantees the heart.
The conduit is placed but inactive
Placement alone is insufficient. Confirm that the conduit is underwater and that its frame uses prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns in a valid arrangement. A partial or incorrectly built frame will not provide the intended conduit power.
The conduit works but its area feels small
The frame’s completeness affects effective range. Add the remaining valid frame blocks according to the current Java or Bedrock layout rather than moving the conduit and rebuilding it from unrelated materials.

When should you use the Heart of the Sea?
Use it when you are ready to assemble the complete conduit setup: eight nautilus shells, a safe underwater location, and enough prismarine-family blocks for the activation frame. Until those pieces are available, storing the heart is sensible because it has no other gameplay purpose and cannot be replaced through crafting or trading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Heart of the Sea in a beacon or another recipe?
No. Mojang describes it as an ingredient for one item: the conduit. It has no documented role in beacon construction, weapons, armor, or other crafting recipes.
Why does my treasure map point to a beach instead of the ocean?
Buried treasure can generate on beaches and snowy beaches as well as underwater. A shoreline X is still a normal treasure destination; excavate through the local sand, gravel, stone, or other covering blocks.
Do I need to find all eight nautilus shells before collecting the heart?
No. The map and chest route is independent of shell collection. You can secure the heart first and craft the conduit later when the eight-shell recipe and underwater frame are ready.

Are Java and Bedrock commands the same for this item?
Both editions use the identifier heart_of_the_sea. Bedrock references additionally list numeric ID 571, so command syntax that relies on numeric IDs should be checked against the edition you are playing.
