Hearth and Hamlet vs. Stardew Valley: Which Cozy Game Should You Play?

These pixel-art games offer different kinds of cozy play: build a medieval realm in Hearth and Hamlet, or farm and make a life in Stardew Valley.

Choose Stardew Valley if you want a farming-and-community RPG: grow crops, care for animals, get to know residents, explore caves, and play co-op on supported platforms. Choose Hearth and Hamlet if you would rather build a medieval settlement by assigning workers, gathering resources, researching upgrades, and expanding your realm. Despite their cozy pixel-art presentation, they are not two versions of the same farming game.

At a glance: which game fits you?

What you do in each game

Hearth and Hamlet: grow a settlement into a kingdom

Hearth and Hamlet starts at a campfire and builds toward a kingdom. Its listed activities include gathering food, wood, stone, and gold; assigning workers; constructing buildings; researching permanent upgrades; setting laws and policies; trading with other lands; and developing magic. Steam characterizes it as a medieval city-builder clicker with resource management, upgrade trees, and idle gameplay. Its listing identifies single-player, not multiplayer. Steam store page

Stardew Valley: make a life on a farm and in town

Stardew Valley begins with an inherited farm and the chance to build a new life in the valley. The official feature list includes five farm layouts, crops and animals, orchards and machines, relationships with more than 30 residents, dating and marriage options, caves with monsters and treasure, fishing, and more than 100 cooking and crafting recipes. It also supports multiplayer on eligible platforms. Official press page

The practical distinction is settlement optimization versus farm-life role-playing. If you specifically want to plant crops, raise animals, and get to know a town, Stardew Valley is the direct match. Hearth and Hamlet is about developing and managing a realm, not a conventional farming loop.

Social play and multiplayer

Stardew Valley is the choice for players who want co-op: its official factsheet says one to three invited players can join on supported platforms. That statement does not cover Mobile, PlayStation Vita, or Tesla, so check the store listing for the platform you plan to use. Official press page

The cited Steam page for Hearth and Hamlet lists single-player. If playing with friends is essential, do not assume it has multiplayer based on its shared cozy aesthetic or building theme. Steam store page

Platforms, release dates, and price checks

The official Stardew Valley press page lists Steam, GOG, Humble, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Android. It says the mobile version includes the full single-player content, with touch-oriented controls and redesigned menus. Its factsheet gives a February 22, 2016 date, while the same page separately identifies February 26, 2016 as the PC release; the safe shorthand is that the game released in 2016. Official press page

The cited Hearth and Hamlet Steam listing specifies Windows and SteamOS/Linux requirements and lists Steam Achievements and Family Sharing alongside single-player. The reviewed listing gives August 19, 2026 as its release date. Store details can change, so use the current listing for availability and requirements. Steam store page

Prices vary by region and can change. The official Stardew Valley page lists regular prices of USD $14.99, EUR €13,99, CAD $16.99, and GBP £10.99; these are listed regional amounts, not a guarantee of today’s price. A Steam snapshot for Hearth and Hamlet displayed a temporary October 8 promotion and reduced USD price, which should not be treated as a lasting or region-wide price. How much should sales and reviews influence the choice?

ConcernedApe reported in December 2024 that Stardew Valley had sold more than 41 million copies across all platforms, including more than 26 million on PC and 7.9 million on Nintendo Switch. The cited sources do not provide a comparable sales figure for Hearth and Hamlet, so these numbers show Stardew Valley‘s reach, not a like-for-like quality comparison. Official press page

Review counts and ratings are changing store snapshots; they are not a substitute for choosing the game whose activities suit you. Steam store page
