1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose Hell Is Us if you want a compact, clue-led mystery with active melee combat and almost no interface guidance. Choose Death Stranding if you want a longer, slower journey in which carrying cargo, reading terrain, planning routes and helping build shared infrastructure are the main attractions. Both games are bleak, strange and deliberately isolating, but they make exploration mean very different things.
The short answer
Hell Is Us is the better fit for players who define exploration as discovering what a place, object or story is hiding. It removes the usual map, compass and quest-marker safety net, then asks you to observe rooms, landscapes and conversations closely. Progress often feels like solving an environmental mystery. When that design works, your own inference is the reward; when it does not, the lack of direction can make the next step difficult to read.

Death Stranding is the better fit for players who define exploration as learning how to cross a hostile landscape. Its delivery orders give you a reason to travel, but the meaningful decisions are logistical: what to carry, which route to take, how to balance a load, when to use a vehicle and whether to invest in infrastructure that makes later trips safer. Other players’ roads, bridges and watchtowers can change the practical shape of your world without requiring conventional multiplayer.
Neither is simply a version of the other. Hell Is Us concentrates its atmosphere in authored spaces, investigation and melee encounters. Death Stranding makes traversal, delivery work and asynchronous cooperation the central fantasy.
#1 Best Overall
- A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
- A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
- COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
How their exploration philosophies differ
Hell Is Us: exploration without a navigation checklist
The official PlayStation description is unusually explicit: “No map, no compass, no quest markers: following your instincts is part of the adventure.” You are expected to remember clues, notice visual relationships and decide what deserves investigation. The game uses a drone, environmental details and conversations to help you form a mental picture rather than placing every objective on a minimap.
This approach gives ordinary observations weight. A blocked route, unusual structure or seemingly incidental detail may matter later, and side stories reward attention instead of checklist completion. GameSpot compares the approach to classic point-and-click adventures: progress comes from noticing and interpreting rather than clearing icons from a screen.
The trade-off is real. GamesRadar calls the absence of waypoints and explicit objectives a “double-edged magical sword.” It can pull you more deeply into Hadea, but it can also make it unclear whether you missed a clue, misunderstood one or simply have not reached the intended trigger. PC Gamer’s review adds another qualification: exploration is strongest in tightly authored areas, while later zones lean more heavily on atmosphere. The no-marker philosophy is therefore a design ambition, not a guarantee that every area will produce the same density of discoveries.
Death Stranding: exploration as route planning
Death Stranding gives you delivery orders and destinations, so it is not directionless. The challenge begins after you accept the job. You must read slopes, rivers, gaps, weather and hazards, then choose a route that protects both Sam and his cargo. Walking, climbing, balancing a load and deciding when a vehicle is worth the risk make movement itself the primary system.
PlayStation’s launch guide describes a progression in which deliveries unlock tools, plot points and stronger chiral connections. Those connections increase the bandwidth available for online structures such as bridges, roads and watchtowers. A difficult crossing can become substantially easier because players collectively built something useful there.
That means Death Stranding’s discovery is often procedural. You learn the safest river crossing, the least punishing incline or the point at which a road saves more time than it costs resources. The landscape remains imposing, but repeated journeys teach you how to negotiate it.
Core activity: investigation and fighting versus deliveries and logistics
What you do in Hell Is Us
- Investigate a war-torn setting and follow clues through authored spaces.
- Use observation and your own decisions to uncover discoveries and side stories.
- Fight supernatural chimeras with melee weapons and abilities.
- Use a drone and environmental information to understand routes and problems.
- Find shortcuts and solve puzzle-like progression problems without a conventional objective trail.
Combat is not an occasional interruption to exploration. The cited coverage describes a melee-forward system built around swords, spears and axes, with dodges, blocks, parries and abilities. TechRadar characterizes it as “semi-soulslike,” while GamesRadar also emphasizes the importance of defensive timing. If you want an exploration game in which entering an unknown area may lead directly to a demanding close-quarters encounter, Hell Is Us gives that tension a central role.

What you do in Death Stranding
- Accept deliveries that connect isolated settlements and advance the story.
- Select, protect and manage cargo while moving through difficult terrain.
- Balance weight and equipment against speed, stability and safety.
- Choose between walking, climbing, crossing water and using vehicles.
- Build or use shared infrastructure that improves future journeys.
TIME summarizes the basic rhythm as walking from point A to point B while delivering packages, but that description is only the foundation. The game layers unusual characters, supernatural threats and a social-rebuilding idea onto the delivery loop. The satisfaction comes from turning an intimidating route into a manageable one, then seeing how your decisions—or another player’s contribution—change the next attempt.
Combat and tension
Hell Is Us puts melee in the foreground
Hell Is Us gives you swords, spears and axes alongside blocks, parries, dodges and special abilities. The result is an active combat loop in which reading an enemy and committing to a defensive response matters as much as finding the next clue. Encounters reinforce the setting’s supernatural danger instead of merely decorating an otherwise peaceful walking game.
Its violence also supports the story’s thematic frame. Creative Director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête states: “The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.” That idea connects the war-torn human setting with the chimeras and with the player’s repeated return to violence as a way through an obstacle.
Death Stranding treats danger as part of a delivery problem
Death Stranding contains combat and spectral threats, but the official framing emphasizes connection and traversal first. A confrontation is often one factor in a larger calculation: whether the cargo can survive, whether a detour is safer, how much equipment you can afford to carry and whether the trip is worth repeating. If you want every unexplored valley to promise a duel, Hell Is Us is the clearer choice. If you prefer danger that makes you reconsider a route and a loadout, Death Stranding is more aligned with that preference.

Atmosphere, story and the feeling of isolation
Hell Is Us: a war-torn supernatural mystery
Hell Is Us is set in Hadea, a place shaped by civil conflict and supernatural chimeras. Its atmosphere comes from the friction between human violence, strange discoveries and spaces that feel authored rather than procedurally interchangeable. The story asks you to assemble meaning from what you see and hear, so uncertainty is part of the mood.
Its isolation is investigative. You are alone with the evidence, and the game expects you to decide what it means. The bleakness is intimate: a damaged place, a hidden history and the possibility that the next clue is in a detail you almost ignored.
Death Stranding: a post-apocalyptic connection story
Death Stranding presents a decimated America in which Sam Bridges delivers hope by reconnecting survivors. Hideo Kojima described it as “a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society.” The world is desolate, but the emotional direction points toward rebuilding rather than simply uncovering a local mystery.

Its atmosphere is shaped by long quiet stretches, exposed terrain, spectral threats and the melancholy of moving between isolated communities. The tension between solitude and connection is not just narrative subject matter: it is expressed through the act of walking alone and then discovering that someone else’s structure can help you.

Calling one game simply “more atmospheric” misses the distinction. Hell Is Us is more concentrated and mystery-driven. Death Stranding is broader, more meditative and more interested in the emotional meaning of making a difficult journey useful to someone else.
Social design: solo authorship versus asynchronous cooperation
Hell Is Us is primarily a solo authored adventure
The materials cited for Hell Is Us present it as a primarily solo experience. Its discoveries, combat encounters and environmental puzzles are authored for your investigation. There is no comparable shared-construction system described in those materials, so choose it when you want the world to remain a controlled mystery rather than a landscape altered by a community.
Death Stranding lets other players change your routes
Death Stranding’s chiral network is its defining social layer. As you connect settlements, more bandwidth becomes available for structures such as bridges, roads and watchtowers. Players can contribute those structures and shared resources, allowing someone else’s work to shorten or simplify your next delivery. You can affect other journeys in the same way.
This is asynchronous cooperation, not a requirement to coordinate a live party. The social reward is practical and cumulative: a route that once demanded careful climbing may later include a road, bridge or observation point. If the thought of leaving useful infrastructure for strangers appeals to you, Death Stranding offers a form of multiplayer that is woven into exploration rather than added as a separate mode.

Hell Is Us has less conventional hand-holding. It removes the map, compass and quest markers and makes environmental reading part of the challenge. You will need to remember information, test interpretations and accept that the game may not immediately tell you whether you are pursuing the right lead.
Death Stranding provides clearer structure through delivery orders and destinations, but it does not make the journey automatic. It hands you a goal and asks you to solve the physical problem of reaching it with cargo intact. In practice, Hell Is Us withholds information about what to do next, while Death Stranding gives you the job and withholds an easy answer to how to do it efficiently.

Length and commitment
Reviews describe a Hell Is Us first playthrough as roughly 20 to 30 hours depending on thoroughness. TechRadar reports a little under 30 hours for a thorough review playthrough; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed duration. The more compact scale suits players who want a concentrated mystery rather than an open-ended travel routine.
Death Stranding is a longer-form journey with deliberately deliberate pacing. The cited official sources do not provide a single authoritative completion-time figure, so treat any number elsewhere as dependent on story progress, optional deliveries, infrastructure work and how much time you spend exploring. Its commitment is not only measured in hours but in willingness to repeat routes and gradually optimize them.
