What was the Epic Games free offer?
Insider Gaming reported on January 3, 2025, that Hell Let Loose was the latest Epic Games Store giveaway on PC, with the offer scheduled to run through January 9, 2025. That promotion has expired; the old headline should not be read as a claim that the game is free now. The original headline called it “one of the most realistic WW2 games ever made,” but that is a subjective description, not an independently established ranking. Epic describes features intended to convey a tactical, large-scale battle: 50-versus-50 matches, vehicles, artillery, shifting front lines, and ballistics and recoil patterns it calls “true to life.” Those are store-page descriptions, not the results of an independent realism assessment.
What kind of game is Hell Let Loose?
Epic presents Hell Let Loose as a hardcore World War II first-person shooter built around competitive online multiplayer. Its listing describes battles combining infantry, tanks, and artillery, with a front line that shifts as the match progresses. It lists two modes—Offensive and Warfare—and 14 roles, along with maps such as Omaha Beach, Carentan, Stalingrad, Kursk, and Foy.

#1 Best Overall
- Fight in epic 50 vs 50 multiplayer battles. Play as the North Vietnamese Army or the US Armed Forces.
- Immersive jungle warfare recreates the real-world intensity of the battle. 6 distinct game modes: Offensive, Warfare and 4 alternative new game modes.
- 6 large-scale maps – all with lighting and weather variants and extreme terrain. Emergent gameplay encourages the use of the chain of command to build teamwork and deploy a unique set of tactics and weapons for each battle.
- Multiple vehicles including helicopters and patrol boats. Build tunnels as the NVA and deploy your forces in stealth to ambush the US Armed Forces.
- Enhanced player movement improves in-battle functionality. Revamped tutorial and player onboarding. Updated interface and user experience.
Team communication is central
Epic’s description says, “Communication is essential,” and lists proximity, command, and unit voice chat. That makes coordination a core part of the advertised experience, rather than an incidental feature. A microphone-equipped headset may make voice chat more convenient, but Epic does not list one as a requirement.
Is it a good fit for you?
- Consider it if you want online matches with large teams, coordinated roles, and a mix of infantry, armor, and artillery.
- Think twice if you mainly want a solo campaign or prefer not to coordinate with teammates; the cited store description focuses on competitive multiplayer and communication.
- Check your PC first against Epic’s Windows requirements below before buying or installing.
The available official description supports those practical distinctions, but it does not establish a head-to-head realism ranking against other World War II games.
