The Goði is revealed to be Áleifr, Thórgestr’s father. His effort to control the giants is bound up with fear and power, turning Senua’s final confrontation into a fight over who gets to define reality and rule through terror. For Senua, the ending is not a cure or a clean escape from grief: it is a move toward accepting what she cannot change and choosing how to act.
What happens to Senua at the end of Hellblade II?
Thórgestr tries to reason with his father, the Goði, and the final conflict leads Senua to face him. The Goði is Áleifr, and his interest in controlling the giants is connected to fear and control. That plot reveal shifts the apparent threat from monsters alone to a human antagonist who wields terror as a source of authority. The available ending account comes from Digital Trends’ ending explainer, whose page could not be directly reviewed; its plot details should therefore be treated as a secondary-source summary, not as a creator statement. Why does the Goði’s identity matter?
The reveal collapses the distance between a monstrous threat and the person exercising power behind it. A thematic reading is that the Goði’s authority depends on people fearing the giants, while Senua’s confrontation exposes how that fear can be shaped and used. The ending can therefore be read as a struggle over who controls the story people believe, as well as a confrontation with an antagonist. That is an interpretation of the plot summary, not an official creator explanation of every event.
The game presents events through Senua’s perspective, but that does not establish that every giant, disaster, or vision is “just in her head.” Professor Paul Fletcher, the series’ mental-health consultant, describes her as able to recognize and participate in other people’s constructions of reality: “Senua may have the darkness and the voices, but at the same time, she can recognise and be part of other people’s constructions too.” Xbox Wire’s feature on Senua’s character development

What the ending means for Senua
Grief becomes a reason to protect others
Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews says Senua accepts that she cannot bring Dillion back and turns her grief toward positive action, so his death was not for nothing. Matthews describes her as having “come to a place of acceptance of two things.” Xbox Wire’s studio feature on Senua’s journey
Stage Director and Writer Lara Derham contrasts Senua’s earlier, inward focus with her wider purpose in the sequel: “Her purpose in the first game was very interior, the guilt that she felt over Dillion was a very personal mission to her,” she says. Derham also describes the new purpose as preventing harm to others. Read this as a shift in what Senua chooses to do with her grief, not as proof that grief has disappeared. She manages psychosis; she is not cured
Melina Juergens, who performs Senua, puts the distinction plainly: “She’s not overcoming psychosis, but she knows how to manage it better.” The game’s writers also describe Senua as able to choose whether to respond to the voices. The ending is thus an expression of agency within an ongoing experience, rather than a cure narrative or a claim that the voices have vanished. Xbox Wire’s studio feature on Senua’s journey
How to read the ending without overclaiming
| Reading | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Literal plot | The ending summary identifies the Goði as Áleifr, Thórgestr’s father, and connects his interest in the giants with fear and control. | It is not a developer quotation or a complete account of every supernatural event. |
| Thematic reading | The conflict can be understood as a challenge to authority that depends on shaping fear and belief. | It is an interpretation, not an official, exhaustive explanation. |
| Filtered perspective | The official interview supports the idea that Senua can engage with other people’s constructions of reality. | It does not prove that every giant or vision is imaginary. |
| Character arc | Official creator comments describe acceptance, a purpose focused on preventing harm, and better management of psychosis. | They do not describe Senua as cured or free of grief and voices. |
Does the Enhanced edition or the next game change this ending?
The official game site says Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Enhanced arrived on August 12, 2025, adding developer commentary and features including Performance Mode on supported consoles, Dark Rot Challenge Mode, and an enhanced Photo Mode. These are edition features, not a different ending. The announcement describes digital storefront availability and a soundtrack app/inclusion; it does not establish a physical edition.
