Senua cannot bring Dillion back. The ending is most convincingly read as her beginning to accept that loss and relate differently to grief, fear, and the experiences she has understood as a curse. It does not show that her voices vanish or that she is cured.
What happens in the ending?
Senua reaches Hela still hoping to restore Dillion, whose soul she has pursued through the game. In the final confrontation, Hela appears to kill her. Yet the scene does not deliver the reunion Senua sought: Dillion remains dead, and the voices remain with Senua.
The ending’s emotional resolution comes not from undoing the loss, but from the collapse of the bargain at the heart of the quest. Senua has faced danger and endured the journey, but she cannot make the past different.
What does Hela’s final scene mean?
The scene supports two readings that can coexist. Within the mythic story, Senua confronts Hela in the world of the game. Symbolically, Hela and the apparent defeat can represent Senua facing the truth that she cannot bargain her way out of Dillion’s death. The ending does not settle every supernatural ambiguity, so it is too strong to claim that the game confirms the journey was imaginary.

On this reading, Senua’s appeal to Hela is the last expression of her hope to reverse the loss. What follows is not victory over death, but a shift away from that impossible goal.
Does Senua accept Dillion’s death?
Acceptance is a useful way to understand the ending, provided it is not mistaken for forgetting Dillion or no longer grieving. Senua’s quest begins with the hope that she can save his soul. By the end, the story offers no restoration; instead, it suggests she can continue without the promise that she will bring him back.

This interpretation fits the game’s official framing: Ninja Theory describes it as a Celtic warrior’s quest to save her lover’s soul and as an exploration of Senua’s experiences of psychosis. Those descriptions allow the quest to operate both as a mythic adventure and as a story about Senua’s inner experience; they do not decree that every event is either literal or unreal.
Are the voices gone, or is Senua cured?
No. The voices’ continued presence matters: the ending suggests a changed relationship to Senua’s experiences, not their disappearance. Mental-health consultant Professor Paul Fletcher described the first game’s movement this way: “The hallmark of [Senua’s Sacrifice] was it was totally enveloped by a darkness, and I think she’s emerging from that and finding a different meaning.” (Xbox Wire, 2024.) Finding a different meaning is not the same as being cured.

Ninja Theory has said that research into experiences of psychosis shaped Senua’s world, and Xbox Wire’s 2024 retrospective also frames the original game around her experiences of psychosis. That context helps explain the story’s perspective without making psychosis a twist that invalidates the events or equating it with violence. The official framing does not provide a definitive diagnosis or establish that every mythic event is unreal.
Why the ending is not a simple defeat
Hela’s apparent killing of Senua can look like failure if success means restoring Dillion. But the quest’s emotional stakes have changed: Senua has confronted the limits of what she can control. The ending can therefore feel like a defeat in the story’s conflict and a step toward living with grief at the same time. It leaves the voices present, rather than offering a tidy cure or a reset of Senua’s life.
