The “return” in Helldivers 2’s February 10, 2026 Machinery of Oppression update is specifically the Cyborgs’ return to the war—and their connection to the Automatons. The Cyberstan campaign feels more threatening because it adds new Cyborg enemies, fortified factory-city missions and a shared pool of reinforcements. Arrowhead later also documented changes to Automaton aiming. Those details support the “scarier than ever” framing, but they do not establish a measured increase in difficulty or prove that the Automatons themselves had literally disappeared and returned.
What returned to the war?
On February 10, 2026, PlayStation Blog announced that Machinery of Oppression was live and sent Helldivers to Cyberstan, the Automaton homeworld. In the announcement, the Automatons have seized schematics for the Star of Peace and are acting under the tasking of the Cyborg Legion. The campaign calls on players to stop Cyborg production and compromise Automaton defenses. PlayStation Blog’s announcement

That wording matters: the announcement identifies the Cyborgs as the faction that returned. Xbox Wire’s official account says the Cyborgs created the Automatons and staged a false-flag invasion of Cyberstan to keep Super Earth’s attention elsewhere. This is fictional lore told in the game’s voice, not real-world history. Xbox Wire’s Cyberstan account
Arrowhead’s community manager Katherine Baskin described the event as “an unprecedented and unforeseeable event, the Cyborgs have returned to once again threaten the liberty and sovereignty of Super Earth and its inhabitants.” It is promotional, in-universe language; it should not be read as confirmation that the Automatons themselves had vanished from the game.

Which new enemies make Cyberstan more dangerous?
The update introduces three Cyborg unit types with distinct battlefield roles, according to the official launch accounts:
- Agitators: Heavily armored field commanders who can take control of enemy squads. Xbox Wire also describes them as carrying plasma weaponry.
- Radicals: Close-range rushers that pressure players by charging into their space.
- Vox Engine: A large war machine equipped with dual laser cannons, rockets and laser gatlings.
The lineup asks squads to respond to different kinds of pressure: a commander that can influence other enemies, a unit built to close distance, and a heavily armed machine with several ranged weapons. These are descriptions from PlayStation Blog and Xbox Wire, not claims based on independent testing.
Why does the Cyberstan campaign raise the stakes?
Factory cities turn objectives into an assault
Cyberstan’s factory cities are heavily defended. The campaign objectives include stopping Cyborg production, compromising defenses and destroying mega factories building by building. That industrial setting gives the operation a clear strategic target: players are not simply fighting enemies in an open area, but trying to disrupt the machinery sustaining the war.

Deaths count against a shared reinforcement limit
The launch announcement describes a finite Galactic Reinforcement Counter. Every death counted against it, and if the counter reached zero, the Battle for Cyberstan would be lost. The announcement did not state a starting total. It urged players to stay alive, use defensive stratagems and support their squadmates. That shared failure condition makes each loss consequential to the campaign, not just to an individual mission.
What changed about Automaton aim later?
Arrowhead’s August 30, 2026, version 6.0.1 patch notes say Automaton aim calculations were not always updating when many enemies were aiming at once. According to the notes, this caused Automatons to aim poorly at high difficulty; the update was intended to improve aim calculation in those crowded situations. Arrowhead’s official patch notes
The same notes list increased damage against durable targets for Rocket Raiders, Rocket Devastators, Hulk Bruisers and Gunships, as well as improved Gunship targeting. These are the developer’s descriptions of the changes; they are not independent measurements of how much more dangerous the enemies became in play.

Does “scarier than ever” mean the game is objectively harder?
Not on the evidence in these official announcements and notes. They describe new enemy roles, fortified industrial objectives, a campaign-wide reinforcement limit and adjustments to Automaton aiming and damage. They do not provide a before-and-after difficulty measure, player-sentiment statistic or comparative ranking showing that this is definitively the game’s hardest or scariest period.
As of October 8, 2026, the latest cited update is Arrowhead’s October 5 version 7.0.0, whose notes focus on the Illuminate, Void planets, SEAF support and other changes rather than announcing another Automaton return. The February Cyberstan campaign is the documented event that best fits the “returned” framing. Version 7.0.0 patch notes
