It launched on August 7, 2025, and is available now; the announcement was made at QuakeCon 2025.
What’s included in the Heretic + Hexen re-release?
The package brings together Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. It also adds two new episodes: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, developed by id Software in collaboration with Nightdive Studios. This is therefore more than a remaster of a single game: it collects the named original games and expansion alongside new campaign content. The launch followed a surprise announcement at QuakeCon 2025. Xbox Wire’s launch coverage includes an interview about the release.
Can you play Heretic + Hexen split-screen or online with friends?

What has changed in the enhanced release?
Soundtrack and archive extras
The release includes a toggleable enhanced “Tome of Power” soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult. PlayStation Blog also describes a Raven Vault with behind-the-scenes material. What should returning players know before starting?
Saves from the original versions of Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel are not compatible with the enhanced release, according to Bethesda’s release notes. Plan to begin those campaigns again rather than expecting an old save to carry over.
The same notes say a Bethesda.net account and persistent internet connection are required for certain features or content. That does not establish an online requirement for every part of the game; check the notes and platform prompts for the particular feature you intend to use.
Where can you play it?
The launch materials list PC and major console platforms, and Steam has a PC product listing. Regional storefront availability, current prices, and subscription-catalog access can change, so confirm those details on your local store before buying or downloading. The title launched August 7, 2025, rather than being a new 2026 release.
