Discovery has a new parent company: Skydance announced that it completed its acquisition of WBD on October 6, 2026. The announcement includes Harry Potter among the combined company’s franchises, but it does not announce any change to Hogwarts Legacy 2—or confirm the sequel’s release date, platforms, budget or creative direction. Those details remain unconfirmed unless the publisher or developer announces them specifically.
What Skydance’s acquisition means for Hogwarts Legacy 2
The ownership change is at the parent-company level. Skydance’s October 6, 2026 closing announcement says the combined company is named Skydance and lists Harry Potter among its franchises. It does not name Hogwarts Legacy 2 or describe a change to the game’s development.
That distinction matters: a corporate acquisition can change who owns a company without announcing a new production plan for a particular game. The closing announcement does not establish that development responsibilities, release plans or creative decisions for a sequel have changed.
How the Netflix deal fits into the timeline
- December 5, 2025: Netflix and WBD announced a definitive agreement for Netflix to acquire Warner Bros. after a planned separation of Discovery Global. The agreement was conditional on approvals and other requirements; its announcement was not evidence that the deal had closed. Netflix described an approximately $82.7 billion enterprise value and $72.0 billion equity value for the proposed transaction. Those figures were announced transaction values, not a completed sale. Netflix’s announcement
- October 6, 2026: Skydance announced it had completed its acquisition of WBD. That is the completed ownership change described in the available company announcement. Skydance’s closing announcement
So, “new ownership” is accurate when referring to WBD’s parent company as of October 8, 2026. The earlier Netflix agreement should not be described as the completed acquisition.

What Warner Bros. Discovery has said about the Harry Potter games franchise
In its Q4 2024 shareholder letter, dated February 27, 2025, WBD named Harry Potter as one of four “tentpole” games franchises, alongside Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC. The letter also described the original Hogwarts Legacy as the best-selling game of the year. This is evidence of the franchise’s place in the company’s games portfolio, not confirmation of a sequel’s date, platforms, story, multiplayer features or any acquisition-related production change.
“Just two years ago, our Games team broke through with Hogwarts Legacy and created a completely new gaming franchise that was the best-selling game of the year – a result that only three other franchises in the last 15 years have achieved.”

WBD’s Q4 2024 shareholder letter does not give an exact unit-sales figure in the cited passage. The description “best-selling game of the year” should not be turned into a specific sales total without a separately verified source.
Are Harry Potter fans “horrified”?
“Horrified” is headline framing, not a measured account of fan opinion. A ScreenRant headline republished by IMDb News said Harry Potter fans were “already concerned,” but the cited coverage provides no representative poll or measured share of fans. It supports attributing that wording to the outlet, not presenting it as the reaction of fans generally. IMDb News coverage

What is—and is not—confirmed about the sequel
The cited company announcements and shareholder letter do not establish a release date, platforms, story details, game modes, budget or a change to the sequel’s development following the acquisition. They also do not establish that a sequel is available to preorder. Treat claims about those details as unconfirmed unless a publisher or developer makes a game-specific announcement.
When evaluating a future claim, check who made it, whether it explicitly names Hogwarts Legacy 2, and whether it reports a completed decision or merely forecasts one. A company-wide list of franchises is not a sequel announcement.
