In Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Steel Soul mode, an ordinary death ends the run and resets that save profile. Unlock the mode by finishing the game or entering the directional sequence on the Extras page, then decide whether you are aiming to finish the game or earn the separate 100% Steel Heart achievement. For a 100% attempt, the route below follows a guide-author’s approach: advance through early progression and movement upgrades first, then return for regional cleanup before taking the ending path.
How do you unlock Steel Soul mode in Silksong?
Steel Soul becomes available after you finish the game. The mode reference also lists an Extras-page unlock: press Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right. This directional sequence is an alternate unlock method; it does not make the mode safer.
What happens if Hornet dies in Steel Soul?
In ordinary play, Hornet does not respawn after death. The run ends, the save profile resets, and the failed slot is marked “DEFEATED”; that slot must be cleared before it can be reused. Treat unfamiliar encounters as genuine run-ending risks rather than assuming a return to a checkpoint.
The mode reference lists specific exceptions: defeat by First Sinner, Shakra, or Garmond and Zaza, and events inside Elegy of the Deep memories. The memory case is described as waking up rather than suffering a permanent death. These are narrow named exceptions, not evidence that every scripted encounter or memory-like section is safe.

The reference also notes that quitting and reloading near death can sometimes prevent a slot from being marked defeated. This is an exploit-like edge case, not a dependable recovery method; do not build a route around it.
Choose your completion target before routing
The achievement goals are distinct: “Steel Soul” is for finishing the game in Steel Soul, while “Steel Heart” requires reaching 100% completion and finishing the game in Steel Soul. Optional Steel Soul content is separate from the 100% ending route, so do not add optional challenges to a Steel Heart checklist unless you want them for their own rewards.

How to approach a 100% Steel Soul run
The route below reflects the ordering recommended by Vivictor’s step-by-step 100% walkthrough on Silksong Wiki. It is intended to reduce backtracking by postponing broad cleanup until after key movement progression. The ordering and tactical advice are guide-author recommendations, not official Team Cherry strategy or independently verified speedrun requirements.
1. Build progression before broad cleanup
Follow the guide’s early-game progression and speedrun segment through the first act until you obtain a major movement upgrade. The rationale is practical: new movement options make later area revisits more efficient. This is a backtracking-reduction approach, not a guarantee that it is the universally fastest or safest route.

2. Return to regions for completion tasks
Once you have the movement ability, work through the walkthrough’s regions in its listed order. Its regional checklists cover quests, upgrades, fleas, map points, tools, and bosses. The source page includes detailed directions and map images; use those for precise navigation rather than treating this overview as a room-by-room substitute.
3. Take high-risk fights deliberately
The walkthrough’s tactical notes recommend a slow approach to the Conchfly fight, parries against Crust King Khann, and treating Seth as a turn-taking encounter. These are specific guide-author tactics, not official guidance or proven guarantees. Because a failed fight can end the save, learn unfamiliar bosses on another save before attempting them in Steel Soul.

4. Follow the listed ending sequence
The guide’s final sequence is to claim the Everbloom, travel from the Docks by Diving Bell into the Abyss, and defeat Lost Lace. It identifies this as the true-ending route that completes the 100% target. Practice Lost Lace on a normal save first, as the walkthrough itself advises. Game updates can change routes or requirements, so check that the guide’s directions and achievement conditions still match your game version.
