Absolute Radiance is the strongest pick for Hollow Knight’s hardest boss if the measure is finishing the game’s toughest endgame gauntlet. It closes the Pantheon of Hallownest, the fifth and final Pantheon. For a fight judged on its own, though, Pure Vessel and Nightmare King Grimm are close contenders, while Markoth and Grey Prince Zote can be especially punishing for some players. This is an editorial ranking, not an official Team Cherry list.
How this ranking measures difficulty
“Hardest” can mean two different things in Hollow Knight: the execution required to win a fight on its own, or the risk of meeting it late in a long Pantheon run. A demanding boss near the end of a gauntlet can be a bigger obstacle because a loss also erases the progress made through the preceding fights. Arena layout, attack patterns and multi-boss encounters can also make difficulty feel different from player to player.
The order below weighs both fight execution and Pantheon pressure. The placement of Absolute Radiance at number one is the clearest choice when endgame completion is the standard; the order among the next four is more subjective.

Absolute Radiance
Absolute Radiance is the capstone challenge: it is the final boss of the Pantheon of Hallownest, the fifth and final Pantheon. The Pantheon reference describes it as a harder version of Radiance. Its position makes it a particularly high-stakes obstacle: reaching the fight means getting through the long sequence before it, and losing ends that run. That combination makes Absolute Radiance the strongest number-one choice for players focused on completing the endgame gauntlet.

Pure Vessel
Pure Vessel is the final boss of the Pantheon of the Knight and is described as a faster, harder version of the Hollow Knight. It is a top contender even without the final Pantheon’s long sequence behind it. Its direct comparison with a familiar boss also makes clear that this is a distinct, more demanding encounter—not simply another name for the Hollow Knight.

Nightmare King Grimm
Nightmare King Grimm belongs in the top tier, but his exact position depends on whether you judge the fight alone or by where it appears in a gauntlet. In a 2020 Steam discussion, one player called him the hardest specifically because he comes after Failed Champion and before Pure Vessel and Absolute Radiance. That is an example of how sequence pressure changes a ranking, not proof of a universal consensus.

Markoth
Markoth is a credible high-difficulty pick. Players in the same informal discussion included him among the hardest or most aggravating bosses. That reaction is anecdotal, but it reflects an important feature of subjective rankings: an arena or attack pattern that causes trouble for one player can matter more than a boss’s place in an official sequence.

Grey Prince Zote
Grey Prince Zote also appears among the community’s difficult and aggravating picks. His placement here reflects that player-reported friction, rather than a measurable difficulty score. He could rank higher for someone whose preferred approach is poorly suited to the encounter.

Other contenders worth separating from the top five
Sisters of Battle
Sisters of Battle are a high-skill, popular contender, but the available discussion does not establish that they are consistently harder than the top group. Their multi-boss format is a good example of why an encounter can feel demanding for reasons beyond an individual boss’s attack pattern.
Why Pantheon difficulty changes the answer
The Pantheon of Hallownest unlocks after completing the previous four Pantheons and acquiring Void Heart. Its listed sequence contains 42 boss fights, and some encounters use stronger variants rather than the bosses’ usual forms. In that setting, the final fight is not the only source of difficulty: earlier losses can make any late encounter feel more consequential.

Keep the two endgame finales distinct. Pure Vessel closes the Pantheon of the Knight; Absolute Radiance closes the Pantheon of Hallownest. The latter’s position at the end of the fifth Pantheon is why it takes the top spot in a ranking weighted toward completion pressure.

Player disagreement is expected because the question changes with the standard being used. One player may mean the encounter that demands the most precise execution in isolation; another may mean the boss most likely to end a hard-won Pantheon run. A small 2020 Steam thread includes Absolute Radiance, Nightmare King Grimm, Markoth and Grey Prince Zote among players’ hardest or most aggravating picks, but it is an informal discussion rather than a representative poll. There is no official Team Cherry hardest-boss ranking in the cited sources.
