The original Hollow Knight reached 23,819 concurrent players on Steam on 22 August 2025, shortly after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date. That was a newsworthy high at the time, but it was not the final record: SteamDB now lists a peak of 95,655 concurrent players for Hollow Knight, reached on 7 September 2025. Silksong had already launched on 4 September.
How the original Hollow Knight’s Steam record changed
The August figure and the later peak are two records for the same game, measured on different dates. GameSpot reported the 23,819-player figure on 22 August 2025, attributing it to SteamDB. SteamDB’s chart for the original game lists 95,655 as its all-time concurrent-player peak on 7 September 2025.

The Silksong number belongs to a different game and should not be confused with the original’s record. SteamDB’s charts are live counters, so their all-time figures may change if a game sets a new peak.
When Silksong released
Team Cherry announced that Silksong would release on 4 September 2025, then posted an availability notice on its official Steam announcements page. The original Hollow Knight’s later peak came three days after that launch. The timing connects both games’ records to a period of heightened attention around the sequel, but it does not establish why any particular player returned to the original.

These figures are Steam concurrent-user peaks: the highest number of people playing a particular game on Steam at the same time. They are not sales totals, total owners, the number of people who played over an entire day, or counts across every platform. SteamDB classifies the original Hollow Knight as single-player, so simultaneous play is not necessary to experience it. GameSpot also cautioned that concurrent counts do not provide a complete measure of a game’s popularity; it noted that console engagement data was unavailable for its report.

Accordingly, the numbers show a sharp rise in simultaneous Steam activity, not the full reach of either game. They cannot establish how many players were on consoles or whether returning players intended to prepare for the sequel.
