Horizon Forbidden West is now available at no separate purchase cost to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers through the Game Catalog. Sony added the PS5 and PS4 versions on October 20, 2026. That makes it “free” only while you maintain an eligible subscription and while the game remains in the catalog; Sony’s announcement does not give a removal date.
Which game is included in the October 2026 catalog?
The game is Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla Games’ open-world action RPG set after Horizon Zero Dawn. PlayStation describes it as a journey in which Aloy crosses “the Forbidden West – a majestic but dangerous frontier that conceals mysterious new threats.” The story combines exploration, machine-hunting combat, tribal alliances and investigation of humanity’s ancient past.

|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Extra | Includes the game through the Game Catalog listing | Subscription-based catalog access |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Includes the game through the Game Catalog listing | Subscription-based catalog access |

Sony’s cited announcement does not state a special Premium-only feature for this title, so the game-specific inclusion is the same catalog entitlement on both eligible tiers.
How do I download it on PS5 or PS4?
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that has an active Extra or Premium subscription.
- Open the PlayStation Plus section and enter the Game Catalog.
- Search for Horizon Forbidden West, then select the PS5 or PS4 version shown for your console.
- Choose the catalog download option and wait for installation to complete.
If the game does not appear, check that the console is using the subscribed account, that the subscription is active, and that the catalog has refreshed after the October 20 release date. Catalog listings can also vary by region, and Sony has not published a region-by-region expiry schedule for this title.

It is a no-extra-charge download for eligible subscribers, not permanent ownership. Your access depends on both an active Extra or Premium subscription and Horizon Forbidden West continuing to be listed in the Game Catalog. Sony has not announced a removal date in the cited material, so the safest description is “available in the catalog now,” rather than “free forever.”

What happens if the game leaves the catalog?
A catalog download does not convert into a separately owned license. If Sony removes the title, you would need to buy it or regain access through another valid license to continue playing.
What platforms and modes are supported?
The catalog addition covers PS5 and PS4. PlayStation support lists the game as single-player; no multiplayer mode is documented. That means the subscription benefit is aimed at solo story and exploration rather than online co-op.
How long is Horizon Forbidden West?
Playtime depends heavily on how much of the open world you complete. ComicBook.com estimates the main path at roughly 25–30 hours, a run that includes side content at about 60–70 hours, and completionist play at approximately 90–100 hours. These are editorial estimates, not a publisher guarantee.

| Play style | Reported estimate |
|---|---|
| Main story | 25–30 hours |
| Story plus side content | 60–70 hours |
| Completionist | 90–100 hours |
The scale comes from the game’s far-future frontier, machine encounters, tribal quests and optional investigations, so players who focus only on Aloy’s central objective will finish much sooner than explorers clearing the map.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Horizon Forbidden West worth playing through PS Plus?
For subscribers who want a long, solo open-world campaign, the catalog addition offers substantial playtime without buying the game separately. ComicBook.com reported an 88 Metacritic score from 2022, a 4.62/5 PlayStation Store user rating at the time of its October 24, 2026 article, and seven nominations at The Game Awards in 2022. Those figures describe reception, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy its combat or pacing.
Buying the game can make more sense if you expect to keep playing after a catalog removal or do not want an ongoing subscription requirement. ComicBook.com reported a $40 PlayStation Store price when it published its October 2026 article, but digital prices change by region and promotion, so verify the current listing before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PlayStation Plus Premium give a longer license than Extra for this game?
No longer term is documented. Both tiers are listed as providing Game Catalog access, and Sony has not announced a separate retention period for Premium members.
Can I play the PS4 catalog version on a PS5?
The October 2026 listing includes both PS5 and PS4 versions. Select the version displayed for your hardware when you start the download.
Is online multiplayer required to play Horizon Forbidden West?
No. PlayStation support identifies it as a single-player game, so the campaign does not require multiplayer matchmaking.
Should I buy the game instead of using the catalog?
Buying creates a separate license that is not tied to this catalog entry. That option is preferable if you want access regardless of a future removal, while the subscription route avoids a separate purchase today.
