For Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on PC, keep 150 GB free on an SSD. A current English Steam installation occupies about 123 GB on disk and downloads about 97 GB, but the larger 150 GB requirement allows room for temporary installer files, patches and caches. On PS5, the physical Complete Edition requires at least 121 GB and ships on two Blu-ray discs. The 2022 base game was smaller and region-dependent: roughly 84–98 GB on PS5 and about 90 GB on the European PS4 preload. Burning Shores adds about 15–17 GB when installed separately and is already included with Complete Edition.

These figures are not interchangeable. A store’s “available space” requirement is the amount you should have free before starting an installation; the folder left after installation is often smaller. Region-specific PlayStation numbers also vary because language and content depots differ.

Free 150 GB on an SSD before installing the PC Complete Edition. Steam lists “150 GB available space” and “150GB SSD Space.” Nixxes’ support article, updated 12 March 2026, lists 150 GB SSD space for both minimum and recommended configurations, while PlayStation’s US PC specification lists the same requirement at every graphics tier.
The SSD requirement is mandatory in the published specification. A mechanical hard drive is not the supported substitute, even if it has enough capacity. The PC release is the Complete Edition only: it contains the base game, Burning Shores and bonus content, so there is no smaller standalone PC download to choose.

Why does Steam show about 123 GB instead of 150 GB?
A live English Steam installation measured by Steam 250 on 29 October 2026 occupied 131,638,726,764 bytes, displayed as approximately 123 G on disk, with a 97 G download (104,090,887,152 bytes). In decimal terms, the on-disk byte count is about 131.64 GB; Steam’s rounded “123 G” presentation is closer to a binary-style value.
The difference is expected. The 150 GB figure is the safe free-space allowance for unpacking files, temporary installation data, shader caches and future updates. It does not mean that a normal English install permanently fills 150 GB. Keep the full 150 GB free, install, and let Steam reclaim temporary files when the process completes.

What do Steam depots say about languages and DLC?
SteamDB’s 14 October 2026 records show a Windows main depot of 120.09 GiB on disk and a small additional depot of 222.46 MiB. The English language depot is 2.29 GiB. Filtering to Windows, English and no DLC depots produces 122.60 GiB on disk and 96.94 GiB to download, matching the approximately 123 G/97 G figures seen in Steam 250.
The separate DLC depot is listed as 26.35 GiB on disk and 15.59 GiB to download. Do not automatically add that number to the 123 GB figure: the 123 GB listing corresponds to the filtered English installation, and Steam may handle depots differently depending on the account and installed content. SteamDB’s 173.99 GiB total counts every language depot at once, which is not a typical single-language setup.
What else must a PC have besides storage?
The storage question is tied to the platform requirements. The game requires 64-bit Windows 10 version 1909 (build 18363) or newer, DirectX Agility SDK support, AVX and F16C instruction sets, and 16 GB of RAM at every listed performance tier. Nixxes describes its minimum target as Very Low settings at 1280×720 and an average 30 frames per second; its recommended target is Medium at 1920×1080 and an average 60 frames per second. Those performance targets do not reduce the 150 GB SSD requirement.

How much space does the PS5 version need?
The answer depends on whether you mean the 2022 standard release or the Complete Edition. The standard PS5 preload was region-dependent, while the physical Complete Edition box specifies a minimum 121 GB installation.

PlayStation Game Size reports for version 01.003.000, relayed by GameSpot and PlayStation LifeStyle in February 2022, gave these preload downloads:
- United States: 87.608 GB
- Europe: 98.074 GB
- Japan: 83.797 GB
These are preload download sizes, not a current Sony free-space field. Day-one updates and years of patches can make a present-day installation larger, and no live 2026 PlayStation Store page with an individual current GB figure was established. Treat the high-80s to high-90s numbers as the launch baseline rather than a promise about a patched console today.
PS5 Complete Edition
The physical Complete Edition includes the base game, Burning Shores, bonus in-game items, a digital soundtrack, a digital art book and the Horizon Zero Dawn: The Sunhawk digital comic. The rear-of-box information reported by MauroNL and covered by Insider Gaming states that installation needs a minimum of 121 GB.
It ships on two Blu-ray discs. A PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray holds up to 100 GB, so the two-disc design is a physical-capacity solution rather than evidence that every installation occupies more than 200 GB. Some reports rounded the same box information to 120 GB; 121 GB is the stated minimum and the safer planning number.

There is no PS4 Complete Edition. Burning Shores is PS5-only, so the PS4 release cannot receive the bundled expansion.
How large is Horizon Forbidden West on PS4?
The European PS4 preload for version 1.03 was 90.243 GB, described by GameSpot as about 8 GB smaller than the European PS5 build. A complete US and Japan PS4 region table was not published with the figures above, so the European number should not be generalized to every account.
PS4 copies included a free PS5 upgrade, but that does not make the PS4 installation and PS5 installation the same size. Burning Shores never released on PS4, and the expansion cannot be added to the PS4 version.
How much storage does Burning Shores add?
Burning Shores is a PS5-only expansion released on 19 April 2023. PlayStation Game Size figures relayed by PlayStation LifeStyle list 16.763 GB in Europe and 14.921 GB in Japan; the United States download is approximately 15 GB. Push Square characterized the European download as just under 17 GB.

If you own the 2022 standard PS5 edition, allow roughly 15–17 GB for the expansion in addition to the base installation. Complete Edition already bundles Burning Shores, so its 121 GB minimum is the relevant planning figure rather than adding another 15–17 GB on top. The expansion unlocks only after the main story through the Singularity quest; finishing that quest is a progression requirement, not an additional storage requirement.

What is the difference between free space, download size and installed size?
Free space is what the platform asks you to have available before it starts. Installers commonly need temporary working room while they decrypt, copy and replace files. Patches can also require a second copy of changed data during installation.
Download size is the amount transferred from the server. Compression, encryption and language selection mean it can be smaller than the final folder. The PC English download is about 97 GB even though the installed files are about 123 GB.
Installed size is the storage consumed after unpacking. PlayStation’s preload reports are download figures, while the PS5 Complete Edition’s 121 GB wording is a minimum installation figure on the physical packaging. Because the measurements use different conventions, comparing “98 GB PS5” directly with “123 GB PC” is not a like-for-like benchmark.
GB, GiB and regional language packs
SteamDB reports GiB, where one unit is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Steam 250 displays a rounded “G” value beside an exact byte count, and PlayStation tracker reports present PSN values as GB. Language depots explain much of the regional spread on consoles and the much larger 173.99 GiB all-language Steam total. Select only the languages you need when the platform offers that choice.

PS5 capacity
A standard PS5 has an 825 GB internal SSD, with about 667 GB usable after system software according to the commonly cited console figure. A 121 GB Complete Edition installation therefore consumes a substantial portion of the usable space, especially alongside other large games and capture clips.

When the internal drive is crowded, the supported upgrade route is an internal M.2 NVMe SSD that meets PlayStation’s size and speed requirements. An external USB drive can store games for archiving and copying, but PS5 games must be moved back to the internal drive or compatible M.2 storage to play. Leave more than the exact 121 GB minimum available so updates do not fail.
Steam Deck
SteamDB marked the game Playable, not Verified, on 7 October 2026 and noted that manual graphics configuration is required. The 150 GB PC storage requirement still applies. A 64 GB Steam Deck cannot hold the installation; 256 GB is tight after SteamOS and Proton files, while a 512 GB or 1 TB model is the realistic capacity range for the game plus normal free space.

- Identify the edition. On PC, plan for Complete Edition’s 150 GB SSD requirement. On PS5, use 121 GB for Complete Edition or the region-specific standard-edition figures only as historical launch guidance.
- Check the actual free space. On PC, inspect the destination SSD in Steam’s storage manager. On PS5, open Settings, Storage, and Console Storage before beginning the download or disc installation.
- Remove or move large files first. Delete unused games, clips and screenshots, or move compatible PS5 titles to an installed M.2 drive. Do not count an external USB archive as playable PS5 space.
- Start with headroom. Keep the full official allowance free rather than trying to match the compressed download number. This avoids failures when the installer expands files or applies a patch.
- Allow the process to finish. A disc installation can still download updates, and a digital installation can temporarily use more space than the final folder. Recheck storage only after the platform reports completion.
Which number should you remember?
For the PC Complete Edition, reserve 150 GB of SSD space; expect an English Steam installation of roughly 123 GB on disk after setup. For the PS5 Complete Edition, reserve at least 121 GB and remember that the physical release uses two discs. The standard 2022 PS5 game began at about 84–98 GB depending on region, the European PS4 preload was about 90 GB, and Burning Shores alone was about 15–17 GB on PS5.

Can I install Horizon Forbidden West on a PC hard drive if it has 150 GB free?

Does the PS5 Complete Edition include Burning Shores in its 121 GB?

Why is my console download larger than a number I saw online?
PlayStation sizes vary by region because language and content packages differ, and later patches change the launch build. The widely quoted PS5 figures are February 2022 preload measurements, not a guaranteed size for every patched installation in 2026.
Can I keep the PS5 game on an external USB drive after installing it?
You can use external USB storage to archive or move the game, but a PS5 game must be copied to the internal SSD or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before you can play it. Keep free internal space for updates and installation operations.
