hostwiz.dll is a legacy Visual Basic 6 component used by the Package and Deployment Wizard. If hostwiz.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Visual Basic 6 installation or the older application that installed it rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.
The file is associated with the Visual Basic 6-era CommonWizards98 folder, commonly under:

On 64-bit Windows, Visual Basic 6 remains a 32-bit application running through WOW64. Microsoft supports the VB6 runtime on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but does not support the VB6 IDE itself. See Microsoft’s VB6 support policy.
First, identify the program requesting hostwiz.dll
Do not begin by searching System32. Find the application that displays the error.
#1 Best Overall
Check these locations:
- Look at the title bar of the error dialog.
- Right-click the shortcut that starts the program and select Properties.
- Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- If the error appears during development, check whether it occurs inside Visual Basic 6 after selecting Package and Deployment Wizard, Package, or Deploy.
- If the message appears when starting a business application, identify that application’s installation folder.
- If the program closes immediately, open Event Viewer by pressing
Win + R, enteringeventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. Check Windows Logs → Application for the failing executable.
If the caller is Visual Basic 6, follow the wizard repair steps below. If it is another program, repair or reinstall that program instead.
Fix 1: Repair the application that installed hostwiz.dll
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the safest fix for an ordinary application that reports hostwiz.dll. The application installer knows where its files belong and can restore related registry entries and dependencies.
For a normal application
- Press
Win + Ito open Settings. - Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the program that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the original installer or the software vendor’s official installation media.
- Launch the application before restoring custom settings or plugins.
A successful repair opens the application without the missing-file message. If the same dialog returns, the program may be using a different installation, or its antivirus protection may have removed the file. Continue with the antivirus check below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor Visual Basic 6
If the error appears in the VB6 IDE or its Package and Deployment Wizard, use the original Visual Basic 6 installation media or an authorized installation source.
- Close Visual Basic 6.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6 installation.
- Choose Change or Repair, if offered.
- Allow the installer to restore the Package and Deployment Wizard components.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for
hostwiz.dllunder the installation’sCommonWizards98directory. - Test Package and Deployment Wizard → Package.
Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 Service Pack 6 cumulative update is an update package, not a replacement for the complete VB6 IDE installer. Apply it only after the underlying installation has been restored.
If repair does not restore the file, uninstall the damaged VB6 installation and reinstall the required components from the original authorized source. Do not substitute a standalone DLL from a download site.
Fix 2: Register the restored 32-bit DLL
Time needed: 5 minutes
Registration applies mainly to the documented Visual Basic 6 Package and Deployment Wizard failure, including 0x80040154: Class not registered or a related error immediately after choosing Package or Deploy. It is not a universal solution for every “DLL not found” message.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s archived KB 255726 guidance identifies manual registration as a remedy for this wizard problem.
On 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
The VB6 component is 32-bit, so use the 32-bit registration tool in SysWOW64.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command, adjusting the path if VB6 is installed elsewhere:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32 "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioCommonWizards98hostwiz.dll"
The SysWOW64 directory contains the 32-bit regsvr32.exe on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
On 32-bit Windows
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32 "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioCommonWizards98hostwiz.dll"
A successful registration displays a message stating that registration succeeded. Reopen Visual Basic 6 and test the Package and Deployment Wizard.
If Windows reports that the module could not be found, confirm the file path first. The message can also mean that a dependency of hostwiz.dll is missing. If it reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, the file may be the wrong copy, damaged, or not a self-registering component. Return to application repair rather than trying multiple copies.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 command reference explains the command’s supported use.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a legacy component even when the parent application is legitimate. Do not disable protection broadly.
Rank #3
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
hostwiz.dllor the application that installed it. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path.
- If the path belongs to the known Visual Basic 6 or application installation and the installer came from a trustworthy source, use Restore or Allow on device, if available.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application afterward.
- Test the program.
Microsoft warns that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. Its Protection History guidance recommends restoring files only when their safety and provenance are known.

Remove the suspicious file and reinstall the legitimate application from its official source.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
hostwiz.dll is not normally a protected Windows operating-system DLL, so SFC and DISM usually will not recreate it. Use these commands when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, installation failures, or servicing errors.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official SFC and DISM instructions explain the results and next steps.
Repeatedly running these commands will not replace a missing Visual Basic 6 wizard component. If both commands complete successfully and hostwiz.dll is still absent, repair the application that installed it.
Recommended Free Tools
When manually hunting through Windows repairs and trying to determine which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 5: Check architecture and installation paths
Time needed: 10 minutes
A 32-bit VB6 component must be loaded by a compatible 32-bit application and registered with the matching 32-bit tool.
Check the following:
- On 64-bit Windows, use
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe. - On 32-bit Windows, use
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe. - Do not move
hostwiz.dllintoC:WindowsSystem32. - Do not place it in
C:WindowsSysWOW64merely because Windows is 64-bit. - Use the copy installed with Visual Basic 6 or the calling application.
- Remove duplicate, manually downloaded copies from unrelated folders.
Windows searches application and system locations according to its DLL search order. An incorrect copy in the application directory can be loaded before the repaired copy elsewhere. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order guidance.

Fix 6: Check drivers only if the application also has hardware errors
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A modern driver package is not a known normal owner of hostwiz.dll, so driver repair is not the primary fix. Check drivers only when the same program also crashes around a device, printer, display adapter, or other hardware component.

- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official source.
Finding the correct driver among several hardware versions can be time-consuming; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version, but this does not replace repairing the application that owns hostwiz.dll.
Do not download hostwiz.dll from a random DLL site
An isolated DLL download can contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or missing dependencies. It can also leave the original application’s registry entries and installation paths broken.
Do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder as a first response. Use:
- The original Visual Basic 6 installation media.
- An authorized Visual Studio 6 or VB6 installation source.
- The official application installer for the program producing the error.
- Microsoft’s official VB6 service-pack download where appropriate.
To check an existing file, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect Details and Digital Signatures. Treat reported version and size values as identification clues rather than universal requirements because they can vary by release, language, service pack, and installation source.
Causes of hostwiz.dll errors
| Cause | Most appropriate fix |
|---|---|
| Damaged VB6 installation | Repair or reinstall VB6, then register the 32-bit component |
| Package and Deployment Wizard registration failure | Use the matching elevated regsvr32 command |
| Partially removed legacy application | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History and restore only a trusted file |
| Wrong DLL copy or architecture | Remove duplicates and use the application’s original 32-bit file |
| Missing dependency | Repair the parent application and investigate its installation |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Unrelated program | Identify the actual caller before changing files |
If the error persists
If the file exists and registration succeeds but the error continues:
- Confirm the executable producing the message.
- Check whether the error occurs only in the Package and Deployment Wizard.
- Repair the parent application again using its original installer.
- Check Event Viewer for the failing module and application path.
- Look for missing dependencies rather than assuming
hostwiz.dllitself is missing. - Restore a backup or System Restore point if the failure began after a known change.
- For business-critical legacy software, consider running the original environment in a supported, isolated virtual machine.
Do not assume that repairing the VB6 runtime repairs the VB6 IDE. Microsoft’s support statement separates runtime support on current Windows from support for the old development environment.
FAQ
Is hostwiz.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is normally shipped as a Windows System32 or SysWOW64 operating-system file. It is associated with Visual Basic 6 tooling and the application that installed it.
Best Value
Is hostwiz.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The Visual Basic 6 IDE and its wizard components are 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, use the 32-bit regsvr32 in SysWOW64.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What does “Class not registered” mean here?
In the documented VB6 scenario, it usually means the Package and Deployment Wizard component is missing or its COM registration is damaged. Repair the VB6 installation, then register the installed component with the correct tool.
Should I run regsvr32 for every missing hostwiz.dll error?
No. Registration is relevant when the installed VB6 wizard fails during Package or Deploy. A normal application missing the file should be repaired or reinstalled first.
Will SFC restore hostwiz.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while hostwiz.dll belongs to legacy application tooling.
What if the file is present but the program still fails?
The file may be in the wrong directory, the wrong architecture, incorrectly registered, or missing a dependency. Identify the calling executable and repair its installation.
Is the VB6 IDE supported on Windows 11?
Microsoft supports VB6 runtime components on current Windows versions, but the VB6 IDE itself is not supported. That distinction matters when deciding whether to use a repaired legacy installation or an isolated older environment.
