Their deeper connection is a rivalry over the Satsui no Hado: Capcom presents Akuma as the dangerous path Ryu must resist.
What is Akuma’s family connection to Ryu?
Akuma is Gouken’s younger brother, and Gouken trained Ryu in Ansatsuken. That makes Akuma Ryu’s master’s brother; the cited character materials do not identify Akuma and Ryu as blood relatives. Nor do they say Akuma is Ryu’s father.
Why are Akuma and Ryu rivals?
Both are connected to Ansatsuken, but their relationship to the Satsui no Hado—the force associated with murderous intent—sets them apart. Akuma is consumed by it, while Ryu struggles to control its temptation. Capcom described Akuma as “the danger Ryu faces if he is unable to control the Satsui no Hado within him” in its December 2016 announcement. Akuma’s belief that the highest form of battle puts the participants’ lives on the line further sharpens their opposing approaches.
Does Ryu become Akuma or Evil Ryu?
No. Capcom’s December 2018 explanation of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition says Ryu overcame the Satsui no Hado’s temptation. Kage is described there as the sentient entity of that force within Ryu; he is not evidence that Ryu permanently becomes Akuma or Evil Ryu.
