Spoilers for Hollow Knight’s family history: Hornet is the Hollow Knight’s half-sister. They share a father, the Pale King, but have different mothers: Hornet’s mother is Herrah the Beast, while the White Lady is the mother of the Vessels, including the Hollow Knight and the Knight.
Hollow Knight family tree
The simplest way to understand the relationship is by their parents:
- Hornet: daughter of Herrah the Beast and the Pale King.
- The Hollow Knight: one of the Vessel children associated with the Pale King and the White Lady.
- The Knight: the playable protagonist, and also one of the Vessels. The Knight and the Hollow Knight are separate characters.
Because Hornet shares the Pale King as a father with both Vessel characters, she is the half-sister of the Hollow Knight and the Knight. The White Lady, wife of the Pale King and mother of the Vessels, is Hornet’s stepmother and a guardian figure in her upbringing. She speaks of Hornet with affection. The White Lady’s dialogue and lore provide the clearest in-game family-tree evidence.
Why Herrah became a Dreamer
Hornet’s parentage is tied to a bargain. When the Infection appeared, the Pale King asked Herrah to become one of the Dreamers guarding the Black Egg. Herrah agreed on the condition that the king have a child with her; Hornet was born from that agreement. Herrah then entered eternal sleep as a Dreamer, leaving her and Hornet little time together. Herrah’s lore and dialogue recount the bargain and its consequence.

The White Lady calls Hornet the “Gendered Child” and describes her as a “striking reflection of her mother.” In the same conversation, she says she never begrudged the Wyrm’s “dalliance as bargain” and feels affection for the child born from it. Herrah’s Red Memory offers a more intimate glimpse of their brief relationship: “…Ignore them, daughter… their whispers” and “…A mother… before the mask… before I lay forever in duty…” These are in-game lines, reproduced in the lore references; they establish the family connection without specifying any biological mechanism for Hornet’s conception.

Hornet’s maternal line is distinct from that of the Vessel children. The Hollow Knight was chosen to contain the Infection; Hornet is Herrah and the Pale King’s daughter, not a Vessel. Her shared father makes her the Vessel siblings’ half-sister, but the game’s family references do not make her one of them.
This distinction also avoids a common mix-up: “the Knight” usually means the playable protagonist, while “the Hollow Knight” is the separate Vessel chosen to contain the Infection. Hornet is half-sister to both.
