Fallout 4’s explored outdoor Commonwealth map is estimated at 3.82 square miles, based on a fan measurement reported by Twinfinite—not an official Bethesda figure. Published cross-map trips range from about 10 minutes 40 seconds to just under 20 minutes, but they used different routes and conditions, so neither is a definitive walking time.
How many square miles is Fallout 4’s map?
The commonly cited estimate is 3.82 square miles. Twinfinite reported that fan researcher BradburyMan mapped in-game coordinates using GIS. The estimate covers explored outdoor space within the base map’s boundary; it does not count interiors, underground areas, or DLC landmasses. Twinfinite’s report is the source for the figure, not a Bethesda specification.
Bethesda describes Fallout 4 as an open-world RPG set in the post-nuclear Commonwealth, but its official game page does not give a square-mile total. The 3.82-square-mile number is therefore best understood as a community estimate of a defined portion of the game world, rather than the total area a player can explore across every location.
How long does it take to cross the map?
Published traversals give different answers because they are separate player experiments, not standardized measurements. Kotaku reported a trip of about 10 minutes 40 seconds. Tech Times reported a run from outside Vault 111 to the opposite corner taking just under 20 minutes. These accounts describe different setups and should not be averaged or presented as the time it takes every player to walk across the Commonwealth. Kotaku’s traversal report and Tech Times’ run report provide the respective figures.

Why the times vary
A cross-map time depends on the start and finish points, the route taken, and whether the player walks or runs. Combat, loading screens, pauses, and detours can also affect a trip. The Tech Times account explicitly describes a run beginning outside Vault 111; it is not evidence of a controlled, uninterrupted walk along the same route as the Kotaku traversal.
Does the estimate include Far Harbor and other DLC?
No: the 3.82-square-mile estimate is for explored outdoor space within the base map boundary, and its reported scope excludes DLC. Fallout 4’s add-ons broaden what someone might mean by “the whole map,” but they should not be silently folded into the Commonwealth estimate.
Bethesda described Far Harbor as the largest landmass the studio had created for add-on content at the time. That statement describes the scale of the island as DLC; it does not provide a measured area for Far Harbor or revise the base-game estimate. Bethesda’s Far Harbor feature also discusses the island’s environmental design, not a square-mile measurement.

Without those details, a map-area estimate and a traversal time answer different questions.
