That brief helped shape her space-themed look, including a visor built around her lock-on ability, and prompted story questions that led Blizzard to imagine her childhood in a struggling Mars colony.
What was Blizzard’s idea for Juno?
Concept artist Daryl Tan said the hero team wanted a fast, agile Support hero with a hitscan-like weapon, and that this was where it explored a space-themed character. The gameplay concept came first in the development account: Juno’s appearance was not designed independently of what she needed to do in a match.
Tan described Juno as “heavily designed through the gameplay kit,” which helped inspire the fantasy of the character. That connection is clearest in Pulsar Torpedoes, whose target-locking behavior gave the team a practical reason to design a visor that could display information and show enemies and allies as targets. The interface detail makes the ability legible as part of her character design, rather than a visual accessory detached from her role.
Blizzard’s development interview features Tan and lead narrative designer Miranda Moyer discussing how the kit influenced both Juno’s look and her fictional history.

How did Juno’s abilities shape her story?
The same technology that defined Juno’s gameplay raised a narrative question: how had she learned to use it, and under what circumstances? Moyer said those questions led the story team to explore what life might be like for a child growing up on Mars. In this account of Juno’s creation, gameplay did more than establish a combat role; it supplied the premise for her upbringing.
Blizzard’s fiction places Juno in Project Red Promise, a small scientific expedition secretly funded by Lucheng Interstellar to lay the groundwork for a human colony on Mars. Juno was born there, and Moyer describes her as the first human born on Mars. These are details of the Overwatch universe, not claims about real Mars exploration.

Why does Juno leave Mars for Earth?
The colony’s terraforming project kicks debris into the atmosphere, contributing to massive dust storms that threaten its safety. The scientists try to contact Lucheng, but receive no answer. With enough power to send only one person to Earth, they choose Juno and give her the chance to seek help for her parents and the other colonists.
Moyer characterizes Juno as anxious and overwhelmed by Earth, but also curious. Her heroism, in that description, lies in acting despite fear rather than being fearless. The Mars emergency gives her arrival on Earth a personal purpose: she is not simply exploring a new home, but trying to help the people she left behind.

When did Juno enter Overwatch 2?
Blizzard’s director Alec Dawson later said the team began Juno’s prototype early in the year before his retrospective and worked through many iterations. He did not give an exact iteration count or a complete production schedule. The Season 12 patch notes identify Juno as a new Support hero introduced with that season in 2024. Those launch records establish her introduction, not her balance or availability in the current live-game patch.
The two development accounts describe a particular path for this character: a movement-and-weapon brief shaped the visual concept; the kit’s technology generated questions about her past; and those questions became a story about a Martian-born hero sent to seek help. Blizzard’s account does not establish that this sequence is a rule for every hero it creates.
