Steam Remote Play Together lets friends play a supported local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen game over the internet from one host’s computer. The host owns and runs the game; invited guests generally do not need to buy or install it. To get started, confirm the game’s Steam page lists Remote Play Together, launch it, open the Steam Overlay with Shift+Tab, invite your friends, and assign the incoming controllers or keyboard access inside the game. Connection quality and the exact player limit depend on the title, but Steam’s current guidance is up to four players, or more with fast connections.
What does Steam Remote Play Together actually do?
Remote Play Together turns a game’s local multiplayer mode into a streamed session. The host computer runs the game and sends its video and audio to each guest, while guest controller or keyboard input travels back to the host. Voice chat and controller input are supported, and the host can choose whether to share keyboard and mouse control.

Remote Play Together is intended for titles designed to be played together on one screen or one local machine: local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, and split-screen games. The remote players are effectively taking the seats that would normally be occupied by people in the same room.
Only the game window is shown to invited friends, not the host’s entire desktop. That makes the feature suitable for sharing a game without exposing unrelated applications or files. The host still controls the session and can manage input access while everyone is connected.

What do you need before inviting anyone?
You need a compatible game, a host computer that owns and can run it, and a connection fast enough to stream the session. Guests need a way to receive the stream and send input, but they generally do not need their own copy of the game.
- A Steam game with Remote Play Together support. The store page must explicitly list the feature. A local multiplayer label by itself is not enough.
- One host who owns and installs the game. The host launches the game and keeps it running for the duration of the session.
- Steam Friends or an invitation link. Existing Steam contacts can be invited from the Friends List. Where the Invite Anyone flow is offered, you can send a link instead.
- Input for each guest. Separate controllers are usually the clearest arrangement. A computer guest can use keyboard and mouse if the host grants that access and the game supports the arrangement.
- A fast, stable internet connection. The feature streams video, audio, and input in real time, so latency and stability affect playability.
How do I check whether a game supports Remote Play Together?
Open the game’s Steam store page before buying or inviting friends. Look in the feature labels for Remote Play Together, then check the listed local player modes and player count. Those labels tell you that Steam supports the feature, but they do not guarantee identical controls, a particular number of remote players, or the same behavior in every game mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Read the game’s own local multiplayer instructions as well. Some titles require you to choose a local-versus or co-op mode from the main menu before guests can join; others expose player slots only after a level or lobby is opened.
Do guests need controllers?
Not always, but a controller is often the simplest way for each person to occupy a separate player slot. A guest who joins from a computer can use keyboard and mouse when the host enables keyboard/mouse sharing. If a guest does not already have compatible hardware, an optional USB game controller for PC can provide a straightforward input method; it is not a requirement for the host or for guests who already have supported devices.
How do I start a Remote Play Together session?
Use this sequence on the computer that owns the game. Keep the game in its local multiplayer or shared-screen mode while you complete the invitation.
- Confirm support. On the game’s Steam store page, verify the Remote Play Together feature label and review the local player information.
- Launch the game as host. Start it from your Steam Library on the computer that owns and installed it. Navigate to the game’s local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen menu if it does not open there automatically.
- Open Steam’s social controls. Press
Shift+Tabto open the Steam Overlay, or open the Steam Friends List outside the game. Look for the Remote Play Together invitation option associated with the running game. - Choose how to invite. Select a friend from your Friends List for a direct invitation. If Steam offers Invite Anyone, create an invitation link for someone who is not already in your Steam contacts.
- Wait for acceptance. A friend can accept from Steam Chat. A link recipient opens the link and follows the Steam or Steam Link prompt shown for their device.
- Connect each player’s input. Ask guests to connect their controllers before or during the invitation. If someone is playing with a keyboard and mouse, grant keyboard/mouse sharing through the session controls.
- Assign local player slots. Return to the game and open its local multiplayer or controller-assignment screen. Confirm which controller belongs to each player and make sure the game has an unused local slot.
- Begin the match or level. Start the game only after the guests appear in the session and the game recognizes their inputs. The exact confirmation button and menu location vary by title.
If a guest joins successfully but remains in a waiting state, the Steam connection may be working while the game is still waiting for a local player slot or a button press. Check the game’s own lobby and player-selection screen rather than sending a second invitation immediately.

Should I invite a Steam friend or send an Invite Anyone link?
Both methods connect guests to the same host session. A direct friend invitation is convenient for people already in your Steam network; an Invite Anyone link is useful when you do not want to add someone as a friend or when the guest is joining from a different device.
| Method | Best use | What the guest does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Friends List invitation | Playing with an existing Steam contact | Accepts the invitation in Steam Chat or the Steam interface | Requires the person to be available as a Steam friend |
| Steam Overlay invitation | Inviting while the game is already running | Accepts the overlay or chat invitation | Open the overlay with Shift+Tab; the game must be running on the host computer |
| Invite Anyone link | Sending an invite outside your Steam friend list | Opens the link and follows the Steam or Steam Link prompt | Valve’s flow can allow joining without a Steam account; the prompt and required app depend on the guest’s device |
Use one invitation path at a time when troubleshooting. If a friend invitation does not appear, retry from the Steam Overlay or generate an Invite Anyone link rather than leaving several stale invitations open.
How do controllers and keyboard sharing work?
Remote Play Together presents guest input to the host game as if additional local devices were connected. Each guest should connect a controller and then press a button when the game asks for a player to join. If the game supports keyboard and mouse sharing, the host must explicitly permit that access.
Controller setup
- Connect the controller before accepting the invitation when possible, then reconnect or press a button if the game does not detect it.
- Use the game’s local player-selection screen to assign each controller to a slot. Steam’s session connection alone does not decide which in-game character a guest controls.
- Check whether the title expects one controller per player or allows several players to share a keyboard. Those rules are set by the game.
Keyboard and mouse sharing
Keyboard and mouse sharing is an alternative when a guest has no gamepad or when the game’s local mode is built around keyboard input. The host controls whether that access is enabled, so a guest may be connected and visible but unable to move until permission is granted. Because the same keyboard and mouse can affect the host’s local session, enable sharing only when the game’s control scheme calls for it.
Can someone join from a phone or tablet?
Yes, but mobile participation follows a different app flow from a typical desktop guest. The guest accepts the invitation through the Steam Chat mobile app and then uses the Steam Link mobile app to receive the game stream. The game still runs on the host computer.
A mobile guest needs a practical way to send game input. Touch controls may be available where the game and Steam Link support them; otherwise, pairing a compatible controller with the mobile device is usually the more suitable approach. The title’s local control design determines whether touch input is usable for every player.

For a computer guest, Steam or Steam Link can provide the stream and a connected controller can provide input. The Invite Anyone flow announced by Valve supports guests on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with the exact prompt depending on the device and app.
How many players can join?
Steam’s current Remote Play Together overview says one host can support up to four players, or more with fast connections. Treat that as general Steam guidance rather than a promise for every game. The game’s own local multiplayer design, available player slots, split-screen layout, and the host’s connection determine what is practical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a specific title, verify both the Remote Play Together label and the local player count on its store page. A game may support the Steam feature but offer fewer local seats in a particular mode. Conversely, a title with a larger local limit may require a particularly strong connection as more video streams and input paths are added.
How can I improve a slow or unstable stream?
Start with the host’s network and the game’s video settings. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience, and lowering the game’s resolution can reduce the amount of video data the host must send. Disabling vertical sync is another published troubleshooting suggestion when the stream is unstable.
- Prefer wired networking. Connect the host computer to the router with Ethernet when possible. If the guest is on Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point or reduce competing traffic.
- Lower the game’s resolution. Change the resolution in the game’s graphics menu, then retry the session. A lower output can make the stream more resilient.
- Try disabling vertical sync. Turn off V-Sync in the game’s graphics settings if Valve’s troubleshooting steps apply to your symptoms.
- Reduce session complexity. Ask unnecessary guests to leave and close other high-bandwidth activity on the host or guest networks.
- Restart the invitation. End the current Remote Play Together session, relaunch the game if needed, and invite again from the Steam Overlay or with a fresh link.
Remote Play Together is sensitive to delay because input has to travel to the host and the resulting video has to travel back. A game that is comfortable with turn-based play may remain usable at a delay that makes a fast action game frustrating, even when the connection does not disconnect.
What should I do if a guest cannot control the game?
A connected guest can still lack control because the input device is not detected, the game has no open local slot, or the host has not granted keyboard/mouse access. Check those conditions in order.

The guest appears, but no controller input works
- Have the guest connect or reconnect the controller, then press a button while the game’s player-selection screen is visible.
- Confirm that the game is in its local multiplayer mode rather than a solo menu or a mode that accepts only the host.
- Look for an unused player slot. A game with all local seats occupied will not add another player simply because Steam shows the guest as connected.
Keyboard and mouse input does nothing
- Open the Remote Play Together session controls and grant keyboard/mouse sharing to the intended guest.
- Check whether the game supports separate keyboard-and-mouse players. Some local modes require a controller for every additional player.
- Return to the game’s own control or player-assignment menu and select the guest’s input device.
The guest cannot accept the invitation
Retry through the Steam Overlay or send an Invite Anyone link. A link recipient may be directed to Steam Link or the Steam desktop app, depending on the device and the invitation prompt. If the guest is on mobile, make sure the Steam Chat and Steam Link apps are available before accepting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is Remote Play Together different from native online multiplayer?
Native online multiplayer is built into the game’s networking model, while Remote Play Together streams one host’s local session. That distinction affects ownership, compatibility, and the way player slots work.
| Question | Remote Play Together | Native online multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the game? | One host computer owns, installs, and runs it | Each participant may run the game or connect to the game’s online service, depending on the title |
| What type of game is it for? | Supported local co-op, local multiplayer, shared-screen, or split-screen modes | A mode designed specifically for online connections |
| Does every guest need the game? | Guests generally do not need to buy or install it | The game’s own online ownership and account rules apply |
| Where are player slots assigned? | Inside the host’s local multiplayer menu | Inside the title’s online lobby or matchmaking system |
| What affects performance? | Host rendering, streaming bandwidth, latency, and the local game mode | The game’s online networking, server or host architecture, and each player’s connection |
Choose Remote Play Together when the game’s appeal is sitting around one virtual screen and it lacks an online mode. Choose native online multiplayer when the game provides a purpose-built online lobby and you want each player’s machine to run the game independently.
What privacy and host controls should I know about?
The host controls invitations and input permissions throughout the session. Steam displays the game rather than the host’s full desktop, and keyboard/mouse sharing can be managed instead of being enabled automatically for every participant.

Because the host computer is doing the rendering, a demanding game can affect stream quality even when the internet connection is fast. Closing unnecessary applications and selecting a lower in-game resolution are practical ways to leave more headroom for the host and the stream.

How do I end the session cleanly?
Finish or pause the current game activity, then close the Remote Play Together session from Steam’s overlay or social controls. Guests can leave individually, while the host can end the session for everyone. Closing the game also ends the stream, but using the session controls first gives guests a clear disconnection rather than an unexpected drop.
If you plan to play another title, end the first session before launching the second game. A new game may not inherit the previous local player assignments or the same Remote Play Together invitation state.
How we picked the recommended setup
The workflow above follows Steam’s documented feature requirements and the situations most likely to determine whether a session works: explicit Remote Play Together support, a host-owned installation, a compatible local multiplayer mode, reliable input devices, invitation method, device type, and network stability. No particular game was supplied, so player counts, menus, controller layouts, and mobile touch behavior are described as title-specific rather than guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Remote Play Together across Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, and Android?
Valve’s Invite Anyone flow supports guests on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The guest may be sent to Steam itself or to Steam Link, and the exact handoff depends on the device receiving the invitation.
Does a guest need a Steam account to use an Invite Anyone link?
Valve says the link flow can let someone join without a Steam account. They still need to open the invitation and follow the Steam or Steam Link prompt presented for their device.
Can a phone guest play with touch controls?
Touch input is available only where the game and Steam Link provide a usable touch layout. Pairing a compatible controller is the safer choice for a title whose local mode expects physical buttons or multiple simultaneous inputs.
Is an Ethernet cable required for Remote Play Together?
No. A wired connection is Valve’s recommendation for the best streaming experience, not a universal requirement. A stable wireless connection can work, but congestion and signal strength can increase delay or interruptions.
