Use cloud gaming. Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce NOW can stream supported Call of Duty games to your device, so you avoid installing the full game locally. You may still need an account, a controller, a subscription or game ownership, and a reliable internet connection.
The quickest option: Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming is the simplest first choice for most players, particularly if you do not own a gaming PC. Xbox supports cloud gaming on compatible Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, iPhone and Android devices, tablets, supported browsers, select Samsung and LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and other supported hardware. Availability varies by country, device, plan, and game.

- A Microsoft/Xbox account
- A qualifying Game Pass plan, when required by the title and region
- An Activision account linked to your Xbox account
- A compatible controller or supported mouse and keyboard
- A stable internet connection
Xbox currently presents Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as Game Pass plans with cloud-gaming benefits. However, catalogue access differs by game, region, platform, and plan. Activision’s Call of Duty-specific instructions identify Game Pass Ultimate as required for the covered titles, while Xbox’s newer general cloud-gaming page lists cloud benefits for multiple tiers. Check the live Call of Duty listing and your local checkout page before subscribing; do not assume that every title is included with every plan.

Activision account linking matters because supported progression is associated with that account. Use the same Activision account you use elsewhere if you want supported cross-progression to appear.
How to launch Call of Duty in a browser
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the relevant Game Pass access.
- Search for Warzone or the specific Call of Duty release you want.
- Confirm that the game is marked as cloud playable in your region and under your plan.
- Connect a supported controller, or use mouse and keyboard if that combination is supported on your device.
- Select Play or the cloud-play option.
- Sign in to Activision when prompted.
The game then runs on Microsoft’s remote hardware and streams video and audio to your device. You do not need the full installation stored locally. Queue times, image quality, and responsiveness can vary by plan and connection.
How to play Call of Duty through GeForce NOW
NVIDIA GeForce NOW is a better fit if you already own a supported PC version of Call of Duty through Steam. It streams the game from NVIDIA’s servers rather than requiring your computer to run the full installation.

Activision’s published guidance specifically identified Steam versions of Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, and Modern Warfare II as supported. That guidance is dated October 28, 2024, so check the live GeForce NOW catalogue before paying for a membership. Support can change by title, storefront, region, and date.
What GeForce NOW requires
- An NVIDIA account
- A supported device, browser, or GeForce NOW app
- A linked Steam account
- Ownership of the supported Steam game where required
- An Activision account for sign-in and progression
- Open GeForce NOW or install its app if your device requires it.
- Sign in or create an NVIDIA account.
- Connect the Steam account that owns the supported Call of Duty title.
- Search for the exact game and launch it.
- Complete Activision sign-in or account linking.
A Game Pass licence does not automatically give you ownership of the Steam version. If you own Call of Duty through Xbox, Battle.net, PlayStation, or another storefront, GeForce NOW may not provide access to that copy.
Can I play Warzone without downloading it?
Warzone is free to play, but “free to play” and “free to stream” are separate questions. A cloud provider may still require a subscription, a qualifying account, a supported region, or a particular version of the game.

Xbox’s general cloud documentation says some supported free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account. However, Activision’s Call of Duty-specific Xbox Cloud Gaming instructions require Game Pass Ultimate for the titles covered by that guidance. The current Xbox Call of Duty listing also presents cloud play and a “game purchase required” notice, so its wording should not be treated as a universal promise of subscription-free Warzone access.
Warzone may be free to download, but cloud access is controlled by the current Xbox catalogue and plan rules. Check the live listing for your country before assuming you can stream it at no additional cost.
Can I play without downloading anything at all?
You can usually avoid downloading the full game locally, but not necessarily every piece of software or data. You may need a browser, a cloud-gaming app, controller firmware, account components, or a small launcher. Streaming also uses continuing internet bandwidth rather than eliminating downloads altogether.

Remote Play is another possibility. If Call of Duty is already installed on your Xbox, PlayStation, or gaming PC, its Remote Play feature can stream that installation to another device. This avoids a second installation, but the game still has to be downloaded and updated on the host machine. The console or PC must remain powered on or available, connected to the internet, and ready to run the game.
Which Call of Duty games are supported?
“Call of Duty” covers several different products, and cloud support is not universal.
- Warzone: Free-to-play locally, but cloud access depends on the provider’s current rules.
- Black Ops 6: Listed in Xbox Cloud Gaming access guidance and previously identified by Activision for GeForce NOW through Steam.
- Modern Warfare III and Modern Warfare II: Previously identified by Activision for GeForce NOW through Steam.
- Black Ops 7 and later releases: Do not assume support. Confirm the current Xbox or GeForce NOW listing for the exact release.
- Older games: May be delisted, platform-specific, or absent from a provider’s catalogue.
A game being available on a service in one country or plan does not guarantee that it is available on your device or account.

Controller and input requirements
For the Call of Duty titles covered by Activision’s Xbox Cloud Gaming guidance, you need a supported controller or mouse and keyboard. Touch controls are not supported for those games, even though Xbox supports touch controls in selected other cloud titles.
An Xbox Wireless Controller, PlayStation DualSense, DualShock 4, or another controller explicitly supported by both your device and service is the safest choice. Bluetooth is convenient; USB can avoid pairing problems and may feel more consistent. A wired controller and Ethernet connection are preferable when minimizing latency matters.
Connection and latency tips
Raw download speed is only part of cloud-gaming performance. Latency to the server, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, device decoding, stream resolution, and server queues can make a connection feel poor even when a speed test reports adequate bandwidth.
- Use Ethernet where possible, or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
- Move closer to the router if using Wi-Fi.
- Pause large downloads, backups, and video streams.
- Close bandwidth-heavy background apps and disconnect a VPN while testing.
- Select automatic or the nearest available server in the cloud-gaming service.
- Lower stream quality if the image stutters repeatedly.
- Try a wired controller if Bluetooth input feels unreliable.
- Test another network if packet loss continues.
- Restart the browser or cloud-gaming app.
- Check the provider’s service status if local troubleshooting does not help.
Cloud gaming can work well for casual matches, but it may feel less responsive than a local installation. Players focused on ranked or highly competitive play should prefer local hardware when possible.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is the most straightforward starting point for recent Xbox-accessible Call of Duty games. GeForce NOW is more attractive when you already own the correct Steam edition. Remote Play is convenient but is not genuinely download-free, because the host machine must already contain the game.
