Steam does not let you freely lend an individual game to any friend like a physical disc. The right option depends on what you mean by “share”:
- Let a trusted friend play independently: use Steam Families.
- Play a supported local multiplayer game together: use Remote Play Together.
- Give your friend permanent ownership: buy the game as a gift or send a Steam digital gift card.
Steam Families is the current replacement for the older Steam Family Sharing system. Never give anyone your Steam password: Valve warns that cheating or fraud through shared games can affect the owner’s account and VAC status.

Which Steam sharing method do you need?
| What you want | Use | Does your friend need to own the game? |
|---|---|---|
| Your friend plays the game independently | Steam Families | No, if the title is eligible |
| You play a local multiplayer game together | Remote Play Together | No |
| Your friend owns the game permanently | Steam gifting | No; they receive their own copy |
Steam Families shares access, not ownership. Remote Play Together shares a gaming session, not your library. Gifting creates a separate purchase for the recipient.

Steam Families is intended for trusted people in a family or family-like group, not casual strangers. A family can contain up to six members, with Adult and Child roles. Valve says families can be managed through the Steam desktop client, mobile app, or web browser, although menu labels can vary between platforms.

- If needed, use Group By Library to display the shared library separately from the friend’s own games.
- Select an eligible game and install or launch it.
The friend uses their own Steam account, so achievements remain attached to that account. Ownership stays with the person who purchased the game. Save files and Steam Cloud behavior depend on the individual title, but players do not merge their profiles or achievements.
Can two people play the same shared game?
Members can play different games from the family library at the same time. However, one owned copy generally supports only one person playing that title at a time. If two members want to play the same game simultaneously, the family normally needs two owned copies.
For example, one copy of Portal 2 allows one family member to play it at a time. Two copies allow two members to play simultaneously. If multiple members own the same title, Steam may use an available copy and ask which owner’s copy should launch. Different DLC ownership can also affect the copy selected and whether saves work correctly.
What happens to DLC?
Only DLC the publisher has marked as shareable can be shared. Access is generally tied to the copy being played and the DLC owned by that copy’s owner. A save that depends on DLC another player does not have may not work correctly.

Can shared games be played offline?
Eligible shared games can be played offline when the title supports Steam Families or Family Sharing. This is not a guarantee that every game works offline: third-party accounts, DRM, and games with their own online requirements can still impose restrictions.
Steam Families limitations
Not every Steam game can be shared. Valve lists these common exclusions:
- Games requiring an additional third-party product key, account, or subscription.
- Free-to-play games and DLC purchased for free-to-play games.
- Games or DLC restricted in either player’s region.
- Games that do not support the other player’s operating system.
- Games explicitly excluded by the publisher.
- Games marked private by the original owner.
- Titles already excluded from the former Family Sharing system.
Eligibility can change if a publisher changes a game’s sharing status. Check the game’s Steam Store page or the Steam client for the final answer for a specific title.

Steam Families also gives the owner real security and enforcement risks. Do not add people you barely know, and do not share login credentials. Valve warns that cheating or fraud while using a shared game can result in loss of Family-sharing privileges or a VAC ban affecting the account.

How to play together with Remote Play Together
Use Remote Play Together when you want to play with your friend, especially in a local co-op, split-screen, or party game. The host owns and runs the game; the invited friend does not need to buy or install it.
- Check the game’s Steam Store page to confirm that it supports Remote Play Together.
- Launch the game on the host computer.
- Open the Steam Friends List.
- Invite your friend to the Remote Play Together session.
- Have the friend accept the invitation.
- Connect controllers and configure which inputs the guest may use.
The host computer performs the actual rendering and gameplay. Steam streams video and audio to the invited players, while their inputs travel back to the host. The host can selectively allow keyboard and mouse control. Steam says the session supports up to four additional players in normal conditions, with more possible when connections are fast enough. Only the game is shown to invited friends, rather than the host’s entire desktop.
Remote Play Together is useful when your friend has a weaker computer, uses a different supported operating system, or needs to join a local multiplayer game online. It is not a replacement for Steam Families if your friend wants to download and play independently.
Joining from a phone
Steam’s official Remote Play page says mobile participants can accept an invitation through the Steam Chat mobile app, after which the session launches through Steam Link. The host PC still runs the game. A compatible controller may provide a better experience than touch controls.

Remote Play Together troubleshooting
- No invitation option: the game may not support Remote Play Together.
- Lag, stuttering, or poor image quality: check the host’s upload speed, latency, and network stability.
- Controller not detected: reconnect the controller and check Steam’s controller settings before rejoining.
- Keyboard or mouse does not work: the host may not have granted the relevant input permission.
- The session ends: the host must keep Steam and the game running.
- The invite expired: close the old invitation and send a new one.
- Mobile problems: the friend needs the Steam Chat and Steam Link apps, with a compatible device and controller setup.
How to gift a Steam game
If your friend should own the game permanently, gifting is the cleanest option. The purchase is separate from your library and does not depend on Steam Families.
- Open the game’s Steam Store page.
- Add it to the cart.
- Choose the option to purchase it as a gift.
- Select the recipient or use email delivery where available.
- Complete payment.
- The recipient accepts the gift and adds the game to their Steam account.
Valve’s July 2026 gifting update describes gifting through guest checkout, email delivery, and shared wishlists in supported circumstances. An unaccepted gift email is automatically refunded after 30 days.
Regional rules can affect gifting. Under the cited Steam policy, the recipient must live in the same country as the purchaser for email-delivered gifts. Steam may permit some cross-region direct gifting by adjusting the price to the recipient’s higher-priced region, and the recipient may need to be on the purchaser’s Steam friends list. Because these rules can change, treat the checkout screen as authoritative.

When a Steam digital gift card is better
Choose a digital gift card if you do not know which game your friend wants, they may already own the intended title, or direct gifting is blocked by regional or account restrictions. The recipient receives the value in their Steam Wallet after accepting and can spend it on games, microtransactions, and other eligible Steam purchases.

The U.S. Steam storefront displayed denominations of $5, $10, $25, $50, and $100 in August 2026; denominations may differ by country. Steam says existing Steam Wallet funds cannot be used to purchase a digital gift card. Declined cards are refunded where possible, and currency conversion for recipients in other countries is subject to Steam’s restrictions.
Troubleshooting Steam game sharing
“My friend joined, but the game is missing.”
First restart or refresh Steam and check the Library’s Group By Library view. If the game still does not appear, check whether it requires a third-party account, key, or subscription; is free-to-play; is region-restricted; supports the friend’s operating system; has been excluded by its publisher; or was marked private by the owner. These are eligibility restrictions, not necessarily setup errors.
“The shared game is locked because someone else is playing.”
One family copy is not a two-player license for the same title. Wait for the other player to finish, buy a second copy, or use Remote Play Together if the game supports local multiplayer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“My save does not work.”
Achievements remain separate, but save storage and compatibility vary by game. Different DLC sets can also make saves incompatible or unreliable. Confirm that both players have the required DLC and check the game’s own save and cloud-sync requirements.
“Can I share DLC?”
Only publisher-marked shareable DLC is available, and access is tied to the relevant shared game copy and its owner’s DLC.
“The invitation or gift cannot be sent.”
For Steam Families, confirm that the invitation was sent to the correct Steam account and that the family has room. For gifts, check whether the recipient already owns the game, whether the game can be sold in the recipient’s region, and whether Steam’s current country, friends-list, or pricing rules permit the transaction. A gift card may be the simplest alternative.
