To prevent motion sickness on Steam Frame, first fit the headset level, adjust the IPD wheel until text looks sharp, and lock the lenses. Then favor a stable image and in-game comfort options: teleport movement, snap turning, and a comfort vignette. Keep early sessions short and remove the headset as soon as you feel dizzy, warm, nauseated, or strained. Steam Frame’s weight and display resolution do not prevent cybersickness if your eyes see movement your inner ear does not feel.

Steam Frame launched on 14 September 2026. The practical steps below apply to its standalone and wireless PC-streaming modes, but some settings—especially teleport, snap turning, and vignettes—are controlled by each game rather than by SteamOS.

Why can Steam Frame make you feel sick?

VR motion sickness, also called cybersickness, commonly happens when your eyes register movement that your body does not feel. Your balance relies on information from your vision, inner ear, and muscles and joints. When those signals disagree, symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, sweating, eye strain, or a headache. Dramamine’s 2026 explanation describes the mismatch as car sickness in reverse: in a car your body feels motion your eyes may not register, while in VR your eyes see motion your body does not experience.

On Steam Frame, the most useful things to address first are a poorly aligned or slipping headset, an unstable image, and artificial movement in a game. A blurry view can encourage eye strain, while low or uneven frame delivery and wireless lag can make visual motion feel less consistent. Joystick walking, smooth turning, sudden acceleration, and virtual flight or roller-coaster movement can produce a stronger mismatch than stationary or room-scale play.

Steam Frame has dual 2160 × 2160 LCD panels per eye and a listed refresh range of 72–144 Hz, with 144 Hz marked experimental (Valve, 2026). Those are display specifications, not a guarantee that every game will render smoothly at the selected rate. Valve’s target IPD range is 60–70 mm. There is no published Steam Frame-specific percentage for how many owners experience motion sickness, so it is not possible to estimate your personal risk from a device-wide incidence figure.

How should you set Steam Frame’s fit and IPD?

Fit and lens alignment come before increasing resolution or changing game settings. A tilted or low visor can make the view seem blurry even when the IPD is correct, and a loose fit can let the lenses move away from the setting that looked clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Put the headset on level and centered. Adjust the straps so the visor sits steadily rather than tilted or slipping down. If menu text is blurry, check position before changing rendering quality.
  2. Release the IPD lock. The lock is beneath the magnetic face gasket near the brow, between the lenses and beside the microSD slot. Take the headset off to reach it.
  3. Look at detailed text or a sharp scene. Valve demonstrates adjustment in Half-Life: Alyx, but any clear menu text or detailed image can help you judge focus.
  4. Turn the ridged IPD wheel slowly. It is on the top edge behind the front cover. Move it until the image becomes less clear, then reverse direction until the text looks sharp and comfortable. Valve’s adjustment guidance treats the best setting as subjective: choose the clearest, most relaxed view, not a number that seems ideal on paper.
  5. Engage the IPD lock. Locking holds the lens spacing for later sessions. If the headset is shared, check the setting and lock after another person has used it.

Valve lists a 60–70 mm target IPD range, adjusted mechanically rather than automatically. If you do not know your IPD, an optician can measure it; the PD value on a glasses prescription may also help. If your measured IPD falls outside Valve’s stated range, try the nearest end of the wheel travel, recheck fit, and review Valve’s Hardware Refund Policy before the applicable return window closes. Reports of individual units reaching a little below the published range are anecdotes, not a reason to assume every headset supports that range.

Blurry vision can also come from smudged lenses. Valve’s lens-care guidance, as relayed by How To Video Game, recommends a dry microfiber cloth for routine cleaning. Keep the lenses away from windows: Valve warns that even indoor sunlight can permanently damage the display. If the image looks blurry and dizzying, do not start by raising render resolution; first reseat the visor, clean the lenses, adjust IPD, and lock it.

What should you do about glasses and a slipping visor?

Valve lists glasses frames up to 140 mm wide and includes a magnetic eye-relief spacer. The spacer can create more room, but it does not guarantee that every pair of glasses will fit comfortably. WIRED’s Matt Kamen reported that his spectacles still did not fit inside Steam Frame even with the spacer.

If you wear glasses, check the fit carefully before a long session and avoid forcing frames against the lenses. Valve identifies Zenni prescription inserts as Steam Frame Compatible, meaning Valve says they have been tested to work with the headset. Contacts may be another option if they are already suitable for you, but the choice depends on your vision and comfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the headset settles lower during play, the lenses can lose alignment and the internal eye-tracking cameras can have a worse view. The Valve Ergonomic Accessories Kit includes a top strap, two controller hand straps/battery doors, and an extended light blocker. Valve lists the kit at $59 on its US storefront (checked Nov 2026; regional storefronts use local currency). The top strap may help keep the visor stable; it is not a treatment for motion sickness. The in-box face gasket, eye-relief spacer, and standard light blocker can also affect fit. A separate Accessory Replacement Kit is listed at $49 or regional equivalent and includes a face gasket, head cushion, and standard light blocker.

SteamOS 0.4 added a Presence Sensor sensitivity option at VR Settings > Startup / Shutdown > Presence Sensor. Valve says the high-sensitivity setting can keep displays on under a wider range of conditions, such as when using glasses spacers. If the display turns off unexpectedly while you adjust the fit, check this setting; it does not replace IPD adjustment.

Which Steam Frame performance settings are better for comfort?

For someone prone to nausea, a consistent image is usually a better goal than maximum battery life or the highest possible refresh number. Ars Technica’s 2026 reporting put Steam Frame’s included-adapter wireless streaming ping generally at 5–10 milliseconds, while also noting that standalone performance can be demanding for VR games. Valve’s 72–144 Hz range does not mean every standalone title can supply frames at every rate.

Valve developer documentation, as reported by SteamGamer in 2026, lists 72 Hz and 1728 × 1728 render resolution per eye as defaults, with no frame throttling by default and a user-controlled motion-smoothing preference that can be off, on, or always on. SteamGamer’s article predates retail availability, so menu labels may differ. ComputerBase’s post-launch observations found the SteamOS interface at 90 Hz, and Half-Life: Alyx in standalone at a 72 Hz display rate with 36 base frames per second, with reprojection filling the remaining display intervals. The eye tracking used for on-headset foveated rendering was sampled at 80 times per second in ComputerBase’s report.

Choice What it favors Comfort trade-off
Performance mode Performance over battery life Usually the better starting point if smoothness matters more than runtime; Ars Technica reported about an hour and a half of VR in this mode.
Playtime mode Longer battery life Ars Technica reported well above two hours, but said it often forced a barely tolerable 72 Hz refresh rate with jittery head-movement animation. It is the battery choice, not the comfort choice for a sensitive stomach.
Wireless PC streaming Using a nearby PC to render demanding VR titles Can avoid some standalone performance limits, but depends on a stable wireless connection and a suitable PC. Valve’s included Wi-Fi 6E adapter should be near the play area.

GamingOnLinux, citing Valve, recommends keeping the wireless adapter within about 20 feet (6 metres) of the playspace with a clear line of sight. Ars Technica reported typical adapter ping of 5–10 ms; that is a reported figure, not a promise for every room or network. If streaming feels uneven, check adapter placement and the connection before assuming the headset’s refresh rate alone is the cause.

Valve says Foveated Streaming directs detail toward where you are looking and typically offers over a 10× improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth (Valve, 2026). That feature relies on eye tracking, which is another reason a stable, correctly fitted headset matters. If the view becomes blurry or unstable when the visor slips, reseat it before altering game resolution.

Motion smoothing or reprojection can synthesize frames when a game cannot deliver one at every display interval. That may be more comfortable than visible stutter for some players, but it can also make edges warp or head movement feel swimmy. If smoothing feels unpleasant, try a lower render resolution, a less demanding title, Performance mode, or PC streaming rather than forcing a refresh rate the game cannot sustain. SteamOS 0.3.0 included a fix for per-app Force Always-On motion smoothing and improved Half-Life: Alyx motion-smoothing behavior, according to Valve notes reported by NeoTeo in September 2026.

Do not assume experimental 144 Hz will solve sickness. A high refresh setting that the full rendering pipeline cannot feed consistently may still produce a choppy image. Likewise, Steam Frame Verified or Great on Frame labels refer to local standalone play, not whether a game can be comfortable when streamed from a PC.

Which game comfort settings should you turn on?

Comfort controls live in individual games; Steam Frame’s documentation does not list a SteamOS-wide vignette or teleport control. Start with the options that reduce continuous visual motion, then relax them only if you remain comfortable.

  1. Choose teleport locomotion instead of smooth joystick walking. Teleport breaks movement into discrete transitions rather than showing continuous motion while your body stays still.
  2. Use snap turning rather than smooth stick rotation. Snap turn commonly rotates by 30–45 degrees at a time. It replaces sustained visual rotation—which your inner ear does not feel—with an instantaneous change in view.
  3. Turn on a comfort vignette, tunneling, or comfort mode. Begin at the strongest setting. During virtual movement, the game darkens the screen edges and narrows the visible periphery, then restores the full view when movement stops. Peripheral optical flow can contribute strongly to the sense of self-motion, so reducing it may lessen the visual-vestibular mismatch.
  4. Prefer head-directed movement if the game offers it, rather than moving in a direction controlled independently by the controller.
  5. Disable head bob, camera sway, and forced camera cuts where the game provides those options.
  6. In vehicle or flight scenes, keep a cockpit or other stable reference frame visible if possible.

Teleport is generally the gentlest starting point, but some games offer dash movement instead. A short dash may feel better than continuous walking for some people, but it still creates artificial movement; begin with teleport if you do not know your tolerance. A strong vignette and snap turning can reduce immersion, but you can adjust them later if you remain symptom-free. There is no single best setting for everyone.

For motion sickness prevention, leave OVR Advanced Settings’ Space Orient and Space Drag features off. OVR Advanced Settings 6.0.0 added Space Orient support for Steam Frame on 29 October 2026 and warned that it can be very motion-sickness-inducing. Combined with Space Drag, it enables full six-degree-of-freedom artificial movement—precisely the kind of visual motion a sickness-prone player should avoid.

How should you build up VR legs?

Start with short sessions in stationary or room-scale games, where your body rather than a joystick produces most movement. Stop when symptoms begin; do not try to push through nausea in the hope that you will adapt faster.

Facam’s 2026 guidance suggests beginning with 15–20 minutes and taking a five-minute break while looking at distant real-world objects. Treat that as a published starting suggestion, not a medical limit or a guarantee that a session of that length is safe for everyone. Some players need shorter sessions. Warning signs can be subtle at first: a warm forehead, slight nausea, eye strain, or a mild headache.

Dramamine’s 2026 guidance likewise recommends short early sessions and stopping when symptoms arise. Repeated exposure may help many people adapt, but adaptation is not assured and is not a reason to continue while feeling ill. Do not start a session tired, hungover, stressed, or already nauseated. If you begin to feel dizzy or sick, take the headset off and rest rather than trying to finish a level.

One published progression from Tech in Deep proposes a three-week exposure ladder: in week one, use teleport and snap turning for 10–15-minute sessions; in week two, try slow smooth locomotion while retaining snap turning and a light vignette; from week three onward, remove comfort settings only if your body remains calm. This is one publication’s protocol, not a clinically established schedule. You can stay with the gentlest settings indefinitely; there is no requirement to graduate to smooth movement.

What should you play first on Steam Frame?

Choose a game that lets you remain physically stationary or move around a room before trying continuous joystick locomotion. ComputerBase reported standalone examples of Superhot VR at 90 Hz and Space Pirate Trainer at 120 Hz, compared with Half-Life: Alyx’s 72 Hz standalone default. These examples do not guarantee that either game will suit every player, but they illustrate why the first game need not be the most demanding one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Half-Life: Alyx is included with Steam Frame, but its standalone 72 Hz default and 36 base FPS with reprojection make it a poor first hour for someone especially prone to sickness. Consider streaming it from a PC, using its comfort settings, or saving it until you know how you respond to VR. A game running at a higher native refresh can still make you sick if it uses uncomfortable movement; refresh rate is only one part of the decision.

For an especially cautious first session, a 2D game shown on a virtual cinema screen avoids artificial 3D locomotion. WIRED praised Hades II in this mode. A virtual screen does not eliminate every possible cause of discomfort, but it avoids the moving first-person viewpoint that often provokes cybersickness.

Can a fan, seated play, or passthrough help?

A cool, ventilated room and a gentle fan directed toward your face can make a session more comfortable. Dramamine recommends a cool room and fan; Facam also recommends ventilation. These measures may help with warmth or discomfort, but they do not fix an unstable image or unsuitable movement settings.

During intense artificial movement, seated play can give your body a stable physical reference. Clear the playspace even when seated. GamingOnLinux notes that a small mat under your feet can help you notice when you drift toward furniture without breaking presence; it is a spatial cue, not a substitute for room setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Frame’s passthrough can help you reorient in the room without pulling the headset off abruptly: double-press the Steam button to bring up the monochrome camera view, then hold the Steam button to recenter the dashboard. GamingOnLinux describes passthrough image quality as poor, so use it as a quick orientation aid rather than expecting a clear view. If you are already nauseated, removing the headset and resting is usually the more reliable response.

Should you take Dramamine or ginger for Steam Frame nausea?

Medication is optional and should not be the first fix for a bad fit, choppy image, or uncomfortable game movement. Dramamine’s own 2026 VR article suggests Less Drowsy tablets or chewables for adults and children age 12 and older, and describes its ginger Advanced Herbals line as a drug-free option. Those are manufacturer recommendations; no independent clinical trial quantifying Dramamine, ginger, or acupressure wristbands for Steam Frame or VR cybersickness was published.

Follow the product label and ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an option is appropriate for you, particularly if you take other medicines or have a health condition. Drowsiness can make a motion-sensitive VR session a poor match, even if a product is intended to address motion sickness. Do not treat a manufacturer’s advice as proof that a product prevents VR nausea.

When should you stop playing or ask a clinician?

Take the headset off at the first warning sign and wait until you feel normal before deciding whether to resume. A little queasiness can escalate quickly, and continuing does not guarantee that you will build tolerance. If symptoms persist after stopping, are severe, or concern you, seek appropriate medical advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dramamine advises people with health conditions, vision problems, mental-health or brain disorders, or implanted medical devices to talk to a doctor before using VR. For children, follow the headset maker’s age guidance, keep sessions short, and watch for signs such as paleness, sweating, or becoming unusually quiet. No Valve-authored Steam Frame health-and-safety page stating an official minimum age or Steam Frame-specific sickness rate was published, so do not infer a medical threshold from the headset’s technical specifications.

What should you change first if Steam Frame makes you dizzy?

Use this troubleshooting order so you do not try to solve a fit problem with a graphics setting or a movement problem with medication.

  1. Stop and recover. Remove the headset if you feel sick or dizzy. Do not continue the session to test whether it will pass.
  2. Check the fit. Level and center the visor, clean the lenses, find a sharp and relaxed IPD setting, and lock the lenses. If the headset slips, adjust the straps or consider whether the top strap would stabilize it.
  3. Make movement gentler. In the game’s own settings, choose teleport, snap turning, and a strong vignette. Turn off camera sway and head bob if available.
  4. Favor stable frame delivery. Try Performance mode, lower a demanding render setting if motion smoothing feels swimmy, or stream from a nearby PC using the included adapter with clear line of sight.
  5. Shorten the next session. Try a stationary or room-scale title, take breaks, and reduce the session length if symptoms return.

Steam Frame weighs 185 g at the visor and 440 g fully assembled, according to Valve’s figures as reported by UploadVR and restated on Valve’s 2026 product page. Its balanced front-to-rear design may help physical wear comfort, but comfort from weight is different from cybersickness: a light headset can still feel nauseating if the lenses are misaligned, the image judders, or the game continuously moves the camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam Frame have a global comfort vignette setting?

The supplied Steam Frame documentation describes per-app rendering, refresh rate, frame throttling, and motion smoothing, but no SteamOS-wide vignette. Look in the individual game’s comfort or accessibility menu; the option may be called tunneling, comfort mode, or field-of-view reduction.

Can I use Steam Frame if my IPD is outside 60–70 mm?

Valve’s published target range is 60–70 mm, so the headset may not provide an ideal lens position for every face. A reported measurement outside that range is a reason to verify fit and check Valve’s refund policy rather than assume an anecdotal report of extra dial travel applies to your unit.

Why does Steam Frame feel blurry and dizzy even when the IPD is set?

A visor that has slipped or sits too low can undo a good IPD setting, and smudges can make the image seem out of focus. Check the headset position and lens cleanliness, then lock the IPD; only consider resolution changes after those checks.

Will motion sickness go away if I keep using Steam Frame?

Some people adapt to VR with repeated, cautious exposure, while others remain sensitive. Adaptation is not predictable, and stopping when symptoms begin is safer than trying to force your tolerance.
