A video game becomes a masterpiece when its important parts work together so convincingly that the critic’s written case supports the highest level of recommendation. That judgment is not a universal certification or a claim that the game is literally perfect. IGN calls its 10/10 tier “Masterpiece,” VGC reserves five stars for exceptionally designed and memorable games, and other outlets use different names and thresholds. Across those systems, critics usually examine the game’s design goals, moment-to-moment play, artistic and technical execution, originality, flaws, and the specific version reviewed. The useful question is not “What number did it get?” but “What was the game trying to do, how well did it do it, and does the evidence fit my tastes?”
What does “masterpiece” mean in game criticism?
“Masterpiece” is an outlet’s highest recommendation or a critic’s strongly argued conclusion, not an objective class that every game can be measured against. IGN’s review-practices statement says its 10/10 Masterpiece label is the highest recommendation and adds, “There’s no such thing as a truly perfect game.” VGC’s five-star rating is for games that are exceptionally designed, memorable, raise the bar, or excel within their genre. Those descriptions leave room for limitations while demanding an unusually persuasive whole.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe label therefore belongs to a particular review, publication, version, and moment. A critic may call a game a masterpiece because its design, presentation, and purpose reinforce one another, even if it has bugs, uneven pacing, or a narrow audience. Another critic can reasonably stop at a lower score after weighing the same evidence against different priorities.
Critics do not normally award points for every feature and add the total. IGN and VGC explicitly reject that kind of arithmetic. GameSpot’s policy likewise treats the prose as the information readers need to decide whether a game suits them. The final number is an edited judgment informed by a published scale, not the output of a universal formula.

How do critics judge gameplay and moment-to-moment design?
Gameplay is usually the foundation because it is what the player repeatedly does. BAFTA’s 2027 Game Design rules identify mechanics, controls, innovation, level or world structure, pacing, and second-to-second design as relevant areas. That is an award category rather than a mandatory checklist for every review, but it provides concrete questions for reading any critique.
Are actions expressive and legible?
A strong design makes the relationship between an input, the on-screen response, and the intended consequence understandable. Critics look for controls that support the game’s goals, feedback that communicates success or failure, and mechanics that offer meaningful choices rather than busywork. A complex system can still be elegant if its rules are learnable and its outcomes readable.
Do encounters and spaces develop the game’s ideas?
Levels, missions, enemies, puzzles, and traversal routes should give the mechanics room to matter. A stealth game that repeatedly rewards loud combat, or a role-playing game whose dialogue choices never affect play, may contain good individual parts without a coherent design. Reviews often praise games when new situations teach, test, and recombine the same underlying ideas instead of introducing disconnected features.
Does pacing sustain engagement?
Pacing is more than speed. A game may deliberately slow down for exploration, character development, or atmosphere, then accelerate when its central mechanics need pressure. Critics assess whether those changes feel purposeful and whether repetition, backtracking, tutorials, or difficulty spikes undermine the intended rhythm.
Why do purpose and integration matter more than a feature checklist?
VGC says its reviewers consider what developers intended, whether they achieved it, whether the result is fun, and how original it is. From that aims-based approach comes a useful distinction: a game can have excellent isolated components yet fail to make them reinforce one another. Integration is not a universal scoring category, but it explains why a focused game can outrank a larger one packed with systems.
Ask what experience the game promises. A minimalist puzzle game may pursue clarity and discovery; a horror game may value vulnerability and uncertainty; a competitive title may prioritize readable rules and high-skill mastery. The relevant standard changes with that purpose. “More content,” higher resolution, or a larger map cannot compensate when they pull the experience away from its central promise.
Integration also explains why critics discuss interface, level design, narrative, sound, and mechanics together. If the story is about scarcity while the systems shower the player with resources, the mismatch weakens the argument. If every part supports the same emotional or strategic goal, the result can feel distinctive even without inventing a new genre.

Which artistic and technical qualities enter a masterpiece judgment?
BAFTA’s rules separate visual art, audio achievement, music, narrative, animation, and technical achievement. These categories show the range of craft critics may examine, not a requirement that every game excel equally in every discipline.
Visual art and animation
Art direction concerns choices such as color, composition, character silhouettes, environmental storytelling, and consistency of style. A stylized game can be visually masterful without photorealism. Animation matters when it communicates weight, timing, personality, or cause and effect; it is judged by how it serves play and expression, not by polygon count alone.
Audio, dialogue, and music
BAFTA describes audio achievement as the overall audio experience, including sound, dialogue, and music. Critics may consider whether sound cues clarify danger, whether voice performances support characterization, and whether music shapes tension or release. A quiet or sparse soundtrack can be as deliberate as an orchestral one when it advances the game’s aims.

Narrative and theme
BAFTA’s Narrative category focuses on a story that captivates and engages. A masterpiece does not have to be story-driven: an arcade, simulation, or abstract puzzle can communicate through rules and feedback. For narrative games, critics examine structure, writing, performance, world-building, thematic consistency, and whether player agency supports rather than contradicts the story.
Technology and playability
Technical achievement includes performance, stability, loading, accessibility implementation, and the technology needed to realize the design. IGN cautions that raw resolution, frame rate, and hours of content do not by themselves measure quality. A severe technical problem matters most when it blocks the game’s central promise; a minor compromise may leave the core intact. That severity comparison is an interpretive judgment, not an official formula.
How much originality or influence is required?
Originality can strengthen a top verdict, but it is not an entry requirement. IGN’s Masterpiece description anticipates influence on future design, while Push Square’s 10/10 language emphasizes advancing the medium. VGC’s highest rating also allows an exceptional genre tentpole that executes established ideas at an extraordinary level.
Critics should distinguish expectation from historical proof. At release, a reviewer can argue that a design is likely to influence later games; only subsequent evidence can establish that it did. A familiar structure can still be a masterpiece if its combinations, pacing, and execution are unusually effective. Conversely, a novel mechanic may be important without producing a satisfying game.

Push Square’s 9/10 language is a useful contrast: superb execution can earn the strongest recommendation short of its highest tier when a game does not represent a major leap or has a more substantial limitation. Scores describe a publication’s scale, not a shared industry definition.
Do flaws disqualify a game from masterpiece status?
No. IGN and VGC both describe top-tier games in terms that allow imperfections. The practical question is whether a flaw is peripheral or whether it breaks the experience the game is promising.
- Peripheral compromise: a minor visual inconsistency, a repetitive side activity, or a technical blemish that does not obstruct the main design.
- Central failure: input problems in a precision platformer, unreliable networking in a competitive game, or progression-breaking bugs in a story built around continuity.
- Audience-specific limitation: a demanding difficulty curve, a slow opening, or a specialized control scheme that may be intentional but narrows who will enjoy the game.
Critics should identify the flaw, explain its frequency and consequence, and weigh it against the game’s purpose. A long game is not automatically better than a short one, and a technically immaculate release is not automatically more meaningful than a focused one.
Are 10/10 scores, five stars, and “Essential” the same thing?
They are comparable signals of exceptional quality, but their labels belong to different systems.
| Outlet or system | Highest label | What the published policy indicates |
|---|---|---|
| IGN | 10/10 — Masterpiece | Highest recommendation; no game is literally perfect; the score is not a sum of fixed feature points. |
| VGC | Five stars — Outstanding | Reserved for exceptionally designed, memorable games that raise the bar or excel within their genre; “The score is only a guideline.” |
| GameSpot | 10/10 — Essential | The review’s prose supplies the information readers need to judge personal fit. |
| Push Square | 10/10 | Its top language emphasizes advancing the medium; a 9/10 can still describe superb execution. |
A 9/10 is not a universal near-miss, and a 10/10 does not erase caveats in the text. Read the scale description and the explanation attached to the number before comparing scores across sites.
What does Metacritic prove—and what does it not?
Metacritic converts publication scores to a 0–100 weighted Metascore. It says it does not invent numerical scores for reviews that do not publish one. The result is evidence of aggregated critical reception, not proof that a game is objectively great or suitable for every player.
Metacritic’s Must-Play designation has explicit minimums: a Metascore of 90 or higher from at least 15 publications, according to its published 2023 help information. Those thresholds describe the aggregator’s label; they do not define a masterpiece and should not be confused with IGN’s Masterpiece tier or a user score.

How do awards and consensus change the picture?
An award answers a different question from an individual review. BAFTA’s 2027 Games Awards rules name a Best Game award across genres and separate craft awards, and instruct voters to use “the single criteria of Excellence.” For that year, Best Game eligibility excludes remakes and downloadable content. These are the 2027 rules, not a timeless scoring policy.
Consensus can reveal durability across critics, platforms, and perspectives, but it can also flatten disagreement. A game with divided scores may be highly successful for a particular audience. Awards and aggregate scores are useful context; the detailed argument remains the best guide to personal fit.
Why do platform, edition, and review date matter?
A review is tied to what the critic could assess. VGC states the reviewed platform and release status and normally leaves launch reviews unchanged. IGN allows a rare new review when substantial changes make the original obsolete and continued interest justifies reassessment. Two current articles can therefore describe different versions without contradicting one another.
For live-service and evolving games, note the date, platform, server state, major patches, expansions, and whether the review covers early access or a full release. A launch verdict may address stability and content available then; a later verdict may address a transformed product. Always read the version line before treating a score as timeless.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can God of War (2018) show about the criteria?
IGN lists God of War, The Last of Us, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Grand Theft Auto V among its Masterpiece-labeled games. A tightly defined example is God of War (2018), the Sony Interactive Entertainment PS4 release dated April 20, 2018, as identified by the PlayStation US listing.
Use that example as a framework rather than as a claim of firsthand testing. A critic could ask whether its combat, exploration, camera, character relationships, and presentation reinforce the intended experience; whether the pacing supports both action and quieter scenes; and whether its technical or structural compromises interfere with those aims. The point is not that one component earns the label by itself. The label depends on the argument that the whole design works unusually well together.
Readers seeking a physical copy should verify the seller’s edition, disc format, stock, and PS4 compatibility on the listing they choose. The PlayStation listing establishes the game, year, and platform; it does not establish what any particular retailer currently offers.

How can you evaluate a “masterpiece” claim yourself?
Before accepting a score or label, use the review as an argument and check the evidence in this order:
- Identify the aim. What experience does the game appear to prioritize: mastery, exploration, fear, expression, competition, story, or something else?
- Trace specific design decisions. Which mechanics, controls, encounters, spaces, pacing choices, or interface elements deliver that aim?
- Check integration. Do the art, sound, narrative, technology, and progression support the same experience, or do they conflict with it?
- Separate novelty from execution. Is the praise about a genuinely new approach, an influential idea, or exceptionally polished use of familiar conventions?
- List persistent flaws. What problems recur, who do they affect, and do they obstruct the central promise?
- Confirm context. Which platform, edition, release state, patch level, and review date does the article cover?
- Test personal fit through the prose. Does the reviewer value the same things you do, and are the cautions relevant to your tolerance for difficulty, length, accessibility, or genre conventions?
This method turns “I liked it quite a bit” into a defensible judgment without pretending that taste can be removed from criticism. It also explains why two well-edited reviews can disagree while both remain credible.

A persuasive review names the game’s intention, supports praise with concrete design examples, acknowledges meaningful weaknesses, identifies the version assessed, and explains the score in the outlet’s own terms. It avoids treating graphics, hours, feature count, or aggregate popularity as automatic substitutes for analysis.
The most useful conclusion is conditional rather than absolute: this game achieves a particular experience with unusual coherence, and readers who value those priorities should consider it exceptional. That is a stronger claim than “best game ever” because it shows the reasoning a reader can inspect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a multiplayer or live-service game be called a masterpiece?
Yes, but the review must specify the date, platform, servers, and content state because the product can change after launch. A verdict should explain whether the core systems remain exceptional and how updates, monetization, or community dependence affect the intended experience.
Why can two critics give the same game different top scores?
Outlets attach different meanings to their highest labels, and critics weigh audience fit, genre conventions, and flaws differently. The disagreement is informative when each review identifies its standards and the version it evaluated.

They can reveal broad satisfaction, backlash, or platform-specific problems that publication reviews miss. They are not a substitute for edited criticism because user scores vary in sampling, review-bombing, and familiarity with the game’s context.
Does a game need a great story to qualify?
No. A game can achieve mastery through systems, level design, audiovisual expression, or competitive depth without a conventional narrative. Story matters when it is part of the experience the game sets out to deliver.
How long should I wait before trusting a masterpiece verdict on an evolving game?
Read at least one assessment tied to the current release state and compare it with the launch review’s scope. For games built around updates, durability, balance changes, and access conditions may matter as much as the original feature set.
