The game must provide a way to recognize players, connect friends or find teammates, and check that everyone can join the same session. Support varies by game and platform pairing; crossplay does not automatically mean shared saves or purchases.
What cross-platform multiplayer means
Crossplay, or cross-platform multiplayer, lets players using different supported platforms play together in the same game environment. A game being available on PC and consoles does not by itself prove that its multiplayer connects those versions. The publisher’s explanation of crossplay describes games supporting multiplayer across major consoles, mobile devices, and PCs on the same server; that is a useful plain-language definition, not a universal technical standard. Epic Games Store, July 14, 2025.
How the pieces fit together
There is no single architecture every co-op game follows, but the player-facing flow usually has several parts: the platform or game authenticates a player; the game or an integrated service associates that identity with friends and sessions; players join through an invitation, party, or matchmaking; and the game checks that the resulting connection is allowed.
- Identity: The game needs to recognize players across the platforms it supports. Depending on the title, this may involve platform accounts, a game-specific account, or a service that connects identities.
- Finding and inviting: Players need a way to locate one another. A game may rely on platform friends, an in-game friends list, account linking, or a cross-platform social layer. Epic Online Services documents account login, social overlay, friends, invites, and game sessions as parts of its crossplay integration. Epic Online Services: Crossplay Technical Overview.
- Joining a session: Friends may join a private party or lobby, or players may be brought together through matchmaking. These routes are related but not identical: one connects specific people, while the other finds a compatible group or match.
- Compatibility checks: The game has to determine whether the players can join the same session. Epic’s developer guidance says a game should add validation or enforcement on the host or server when players connect, to confirm that they are crossplay compatible. Epic Online Services: Crossplay Restrictions.
Epic Online Services describes one implementation using Epic Account Services and the EOS SDK, including a social overlay and session features. Other games can use different services and networking designs; the steps above explain the concept, not a requirement that every game use Epic’s technology. How matchmaking differs from inviting a friend
Crossplay can support matchmaking, private parties, or both. Matchmaking pairs players according to the game’s rules; invitations let players bring specific friends into a party or match. Do not assume that support for one route guarantees the other, or that every cooperative mode supports the same platform combinations.
Rocket League illustrates the distinction: its support page says players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam can matchmake together in online match types, and that friends on different platforms can also play private matches. It also says cross-platform play is enabled by default. Those details apply to Rocket League, not to other games. Crossplay is not cross-save
Crossplay concerns playing together across platforms. Cross-save, sometimes discussed alongside cross-progression, concerns carrying a save or character build from one platform to another. A game can support one feature without the other, and the details of supported modes or entitlements are specific to that game. Epic’s cross-platform explainer names Destiny 2 and Warframe as examples that support both crossplay and cross-save. Epic Games Store, July 14, 2025.
Why a friend may not be able to join
Even when a game has crossplay, a particular pairing or session may be unavailable. Platform coverage and game modes vary; account or friend-linking steps may be required; and crossplay settings can limit who enters a matchmaking pool. Restrictions may come from platform settings, the game’s design, or technical and business constraints. Developers may also apply compatibility checks when players connect. - If matchmaking or invitations fail, check the game’s crossplay setting and any relevant platform-level opt-out setting.
These are general checks drawn from documented crossplay systems; the menu names and steps depend on the game. Rocket League, for example, documents its own platform list and private-match support on its support page. Rocket League Support: How do I play Rocket League with a friend on a different platform?

For a specific title, check its current official support information rather than relying only on the phrase “cross-platform.” Confirm the platform pairing you need, whether crossplay covers the co-op mode you want, how friends connect, whether cross-save is separately supported, and whether crossplay can be disabled. These details can differ even between modes in the same game.
