The character wants something, meets pressure that exposes their values, and reaches an outcome that alters their identity, relationships, or circumstances. Unlike a film or novel, a game must also make that journey work through player actions, flexible event order, and sometimes repeated attempts.
What makes a good character arc in a video game?
An arc is change organized around conflict. Game writer Evan Skolnick defines it as “the confrontation of a conflict and the potential resulting change in a character and/or his situation.” His practical test for a prominent character is a beginning, middle, and end; a conflict built around a “want/but” situation; and some resolution—even if the resolution is negative. Game Developer explains Skolnick’s approach.
That definition leaves room for more than a hero becoming kinder or wiser. A character can grow, deteriorate, compromise, deepen a relationship, lose something, or face changed circumstances without changing their personality. What matters is that the conflict leads somewhere the player can recognize.
Want, obstacle, and choice
Give the character a concrete want: escape, protect someone, earn trust, prove a belief, or gain power. Then put a meaningful obstacle in the way. It could be an enemy, a duty, a personal flaw, or the cost of getting what they want. The “want/but” structure becomes dramatic when it forces a decision rather than merely supplying background information.

Pressure that reveals character
A biography can explain a character’s fears and convictions, but behavior under pressure shows what those things mean. Does the character keep a promise when it becomes dangerous? Do they protect a rival, or take the easier route? Player attachment depends in part on characters and stories that make their fate matter; GDC’s “Snap to Character” session focuses on building fully realized characters and compelling stories that encourage that investment.
Change with consequences
Make the difference between the character’s starting point and outcome legible. Show what they accept, reject, lose, or give up along the way. A resolution can be a moral improvement, a downward spiral, a new bond, a changed situation, or a deliberate refusal to change. It does not have to be happy to feel complete.
How should gameplay express character development?
In a game, the player repeatedly acts as—or alongside—the character. Those actions should support the emotional meaning of the story where possible. If the narrative says a character is learning trust but play offers no meaningful chance to rely on anyone, the arc may feel detached from the experience. This is a useful design question, not a rule that every game must make every plot decision interactive.

Mechanics can give story ideas a playable form. In a roguelike, a character’s memory of previous deaths can turn repeated runs into continuity rather than a reset. GDC’s interview with Hades creative director Greg Kasavin describes considering a protagonist who remembers what happened after death. Repetition then becomes part of the character’s experience, not just the player’s route through the game.
Difficulty and pacing can also affect whether players remain with an arc. Kasavin described the frustration of being engaged with a story and then hitting a difficulty wall before seeing its ending. Supergiant considered ways to mitigate that barrier for players who wanted to reach the story’s conclusion. The lesson is not that a game should remove challenge; it is that a sudden obstacle can interrupt narrative engagement when it blocks access to the rest of the story.
Which arc structure fits the game?
There is no single required shape. A tightly authored protagonist can support a clear linear transformation. A customizable or interchangeable protagonist, a rotating cast, or missions played in flexible order calls for other ways to keep development understandable. Use these questions to judge whether a structure fits the game rather than treating any one model as universally best.

| Design axis | Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Protagonist stability | Is there one authored protagonist, a customizable avatar, or a rotating cast? | A consistent personal transformation is easier to build around a stable protagonist; other structures may need relationships or supporting characters to carry continuity. |
| Player agency | Do choices alter the character, the outcome, or mainly the player’s interpretation? | Be precise about what the player authors. A choice can shape meaning without changing the underlying events. |
| Event order | Must scenes happen in sequence, or can missions and runs occur in different orders? | Flexible order can make a strictly sequential transformation hard to follow unless the game provides other narrative anchors. |
| Mechanical expression | Do controls, progression, repeated attempts, or difficulty communicate or obstruct change? | The arc needs to remain legible through what the player does, not only through dialogue or cutscenes. |
| Resolution | Does the arc end in growth, decline, loss, changed circumstances, or deliberate stasis? | A satisfying ending need not be happy or morally improving, but it should resolve the conflict in a way the player can understand. |
These are practical comparison questions drawn from the design challenges described across the cited examples, not a formal taxonomy published by any one source. GDC’s “AAA-TYPICAL: Character and Story Arcs in Open Gameplay Structures” specifically addresses protagonist identity, event order, and relationship arcs in open gameplay.

When the player can recruit different characters, roam between regions, or see scenes in varying orders, continuity cannot depend only on a single sequence of protagonist scenes. Narrative designers can build around recurring characters, authored moments, thematic locations, or dialogue that remains available across different paths.

Watch Dogs: Legion: anchor characters
Ubisoft Toronto says the play-as-anyone system meant the game had no fixed protagonist. The team used authored “anchor characters” to provide continuity and give recruitable characters someone consistent to respond to. This approach lets a changing player-character roster coexist with a more stable narrative thread.

Far Cry 6: themed regions and authored moments
Ubisoft Toronto describes using thematic regions and authored moments to develop the story across a large open world. The regions offer structure without requiring every player to encounter the world in one rigid sequence.
Lost Between Worlds: flexible levels, planned story beats
For this Far Cry 6 expansion, levels could be explored in different orders over multiple runs. Ubisoft Toronto describes using five acts, cinematics as “page turns,” dialogue pools that could trigger in any level, and a Twine prototype to check narrative flow. Those tools helped the team plan continuity around flexible order rather than assume players would see every scene in a fixed sequence.
Ubisoft Toronto’s account is a description of its own development approaches, not independent proof that any one technique produces a better arc. Its practical principle is to match narrative approach to the scale and scope of the game. The studio’s GDC 2023 recap discusses these examples.
How to write a character arc for a game
- State the want. Write what the character is trying to get, protect, avoid, or prove in terms a player can grasp.
- Add the “but.” Identify the opposing force, belief, obligation, or cost that prevents an easy solution.
- Choose pressure points. Plan situations where the character must act, so their values become visible in behavior rather than exposition alone.
- Decide what changes. Specify whether the arc changes the character’s values or identity, their relationships, their circumstances, or some combination.
- Connect change to play. Check whether player actions, progression, repeated attempts, or the game’s structure reinforce the emotional journey—or contradict it.
- Design for the actual order of play. If missions or scenes can happen in different sequences, use recurring characters, dialogue, themes, or authored moments to keep development coherent.
- Resolve the conflict. Give the arc an outcome, including a negative or circumstantial one, and make its consequences understandable.
