How Disabled Gamers Play: Controllers, Game Settings, and Community

Disabled gamers use many different combinations of controllers, inputs, and in-game settings. Here’s how adaptive hardware, accessibility tags, and community support can help players find what works for them.

Disabled gamers play in many different ways: with standard controllers remapped to fit their reach, adaptive controllers and switches, eye tracking or mouth-controlled devices, in-game accessibility settings, or combinations of these. There is no universal setup. What works depends on the player, the game, the platform, and the physical environment.

How do disabled people play video games?

There is no single disabled-gamer experience. Motor, sensory, cognitive, and other access needs can vary and overlap, and a player’s needs may differ from one game or day to another. Some people use a conventional controller with remapped buttons; others use switches, a joystick, eye tracking, a mouth-controlled device, or several inputs together. In-game settings such as captions or control options can also matter.

The practical question is not which device a disabled person should use, but how a particular player can bridge the gap between a game and its controls. As AbleGamers founder Mark Barlet put it in an Associated Press interview, “So thinking on the label of a disability is not the approach to take. It’s about the experience that players need to bridge that gap between a game and a controller that’s not designed for their unique presentation in the world.” (Associated Press, October 12, 2023)

A 2024 peer-reviewed paper on finding suitable assistive technology for gaming describes a range from everyday tools such as screen readers to purpose-designed equipment such as adaptive controllers, eye tracking, and mouth-controlled Quadstick devices. Finding a comfortable, usable arrangement can take experimentation; those examples are possibilities, not a complete equipment list or a prescription for any individual. What is an adaptive gaming controller?

An adaptive controller is hardware designed to let players configure inputs in ways that better suit their movement, reach, or preferred control method. Depending on the setup, a player may connect or position buttons, switches, joysticks, or other inputs rather than rely on a conventional gamepad’s fixed layout. It is one part of accessibility, alongside the game’s own settings, compatible hardware and software, and a setup that is comfortable to use.

Xbox Adaptive Controller and related options

Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller is a configurable option for Xbox gaming. Xbox’s October 2024 announcement also highlighted the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, adaptive thumbstick toppers, and partner devices from ByoWave and 8BitDo. These illustrate how a setup can combine different kinds of hardware, but the announcement does not establish that every device works with every game, console, or other adaptive controller. Check current compatibility and setup information on the relevant Xbox Adaptive Controller page and product pages. Xbox also maintains an Adaptive Controller User Guide Hub.

PlayStation Access controller

Sony’s Access controller is a configurable adaptive controller for PlayStation 5. Sony says it launched globally on December 6, 2023, and describes development with accessibility experts and organizations including AbleGamers, Stack-Up, and SpecialEffect. Sony’s product-development account also says it included research with gamers with physical disabilities. These product details do not establish current stock, price, or whether the controller will suit a particular player. See Sony’s launch announcement for its description of the product.

The Xbox and PlayStation products are platform-specific options, not interchangeable guarantees of access. Before choosing hardware, a player may need to consider the game and platform, input type and layout, mounting and reach, fatigue and comfort, and whether the game offers useful control and sensory settings. A specialist or community organization may be able to help explore options, but the right arrangement is individual.

How do I find games with accessibility features?

Start with information available before purchase, then check the specific features rather than relying on a general label. Xbox’s Accessible Games Initiative uses feature tags intended to help players identify accessibility features a game supports. Sony says accessibility tags on the PlayStation Store provide information about game features. These are discovery aids: a tag does not guarantee that a title will meet a particular player’s needs.

  1. Look for feature details on the relevant store. Xbox introduced its Accessible Games Initiative in March 2025; PlayStation describes its store accessibility tags in its accessibility history.
  2. Open the details for the features that matter to you. Check the game’s own description and settings for controls, captions, visual or audio options, and other relevant features; the available options vary by title.
  3. Check the platform and input setup. Confirm that the game is available on the platform you intend to use and that your preferred controller or input method can be used with that setup.
  4. Seek more specific information when store details are too broad. A developer’s accessibility page or support contact may clarify how an option works in practice. When possible, use a demo, trial, or return policy to reduce the risk of buying a game whose controls do not fit.

The need for clear pre-purchase details is not merely theoretical. A 2025 Royal Society report summarizes a 2021 survey in which 40% of disabled gamers surveyed had purchased games they could not play because of poor accessibility information before purchase. That figure is the report’s summary of the earlier survey, not a new Royal Society poll. (Royal Society, disability technology report, 2025)

What games can I play with one hand?

There is no dependable universal list: whether a game works with one hand depends on its control demands and the player’s preferred input. Some games allow extensive remapping or have few simultaneous inputs; others require frequent combinations, quick camera control, or actions that may be difficult with a particular setup. A one-handed player may use a remapped standard controller, an adaptive joystick, switches, or a different arrangement, depending on comfort and the game.

Before buying, check the title’s control options and feature descriptions for the actions you need to perform. Store tags can help narrow the search, but they do not certify that a game is playable one-handed or suitable for a specific player.

Where can disabled gamers find support and community?

Accessibility is also shaped by other players, specialists, and organizations that help people explore equipment and play. Xbox has highlighted organizations including AbleGamers and SpecialEffect in its gaming accessibility coverage. AbleGamers says its donor-funded programs include peer counseling and adaptive gaming equipment; its current pages are the place to check services, eligibility, regional reach, and contact routes.

  • AbleGamers describes peer counseling and adaptive gaming equipment support.
  • SpecialEffect works in the disability gaming space; check its site for current services and how to get in touch.

Players are not just recipients of accessibility tools. Disabled people share expertise, take part in gaming communities, and help shape how games and hardware are designed. Xbox reported “more than 429 million players with some form of disability” in its March 2025 Accessible Games Initiative announcement, then described “nearly 450 million players with some form of disability” in a May 2025 post. These are separate Xbox-published estimates, not a single settled global census count. (Xbox Wire, March 20, 2025; Xbox Wire, May 2025)
