Open the Steam desktop client and select Steam > Settings in the upper-left corner. This is the main Steam configuration panel on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Open Steam settings on Windows, macOS, or Linux
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam in the upper-left corner of the client window.
- Select Settings.
This menu belongs to the installed Steam client, not the Steam website. Valve documents the same path for managing Steam Guard under Steam > Settings > Security.

Steam updates its menus and Settings interface over time, so labels or placement can differ slightly by operating system, language, client build, beta participation, or interface mode.

In Big Picture Mode, the normal desktop Steam menu is replaced by a controller-friendly interface:
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
- Open Big Picture Mode.
- Select the settings gear in the upper-right corner.
For controller configuration, use Settings > Controller > Controller settings when those labels appear in your client. Valve’s support instructions use this area for controller registration and calibration. Big Picture Mode is designed for television and controller use, but it can also run on a normal computer display.
Valve’s Big Picture guidance identifies the gear beside the power control as the settings entry point.
Steam Deck settings
Steam Deck has more than one settings location, depending on what you are changing:

- Quick device controls: press the physical … button to open the Quick Access menu.
- Game-specific options: open the game’s menu or its Properties and use the available compatibility, launch, storage, or controller controls.
SteamOS and the Deck interface can change independently of the desktop client. Do not assume that a desktop Steam instruction will expose the same controls on every SteamOS build.
Find the setting you actually need
| What you want to change | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Download region, bandwidth, or download behavior | Steam > Settings > Downloads |
| Steam Overlay | Steam > Settings > In Game |
| Steam Guard | Steam > Settings > Security |
| Controller configuration | Desktop Steam settings, or Big Picture > Settings > Controller |
| Storage and game installation folders | Steam’s storage settings |

| Graphics options, DLC, launch options, or local files for one game | Right-click the game in your Library and open Properties |
| Email, password, payment, or family information | Account details or account-management pages |
Not every Steam-related option belongs in the main Settings dialog. In particular, launch options and local-file tools are attached to an individual game’s Properties window.

Press Shift+Tab on a keyboard to open the Steam Overlay, provided the overlay is enabled and supported for that game. The overlay is not the same as the full Steam Settings dialog, and it does not expose every client setting.

For graphics, audio, key bindings, or other gameplay options, use the game’s own settings menu. For the desktop client’s complete configuration panel, return to the Steam window and use Steam > Settings.

Does the Steam website or mobile app have these settings?
No. The Steam website supports store, account, and support functions, but it does not provide the complete Settings dialog found in the desktop client.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The Steam Mobile app is primarily for mobile account access, Steam Guard authentication, store and library features, chat, and related functions. Use the desktop client or Steam Deck interface for downloads, storage, interface preferences, controller configuration, compatibility settings, and overlay options. Valve’s Steam Guard instructions explain that smartphone authentication uses the free Steam Mobile app.

- Check the interface mode. If you are in Big Picture Mode, use the upper-right gear instead of looking for the desktop Steam menu.
- Leave Big Picture Mode. Return to the standard desktop client and try Steam > Settings.
- Close the game. A game or overlay can make the client appear unresponsive or hide the window you need.
- Exit Steam completely. Open the Steam menu, select Exit, then relaunch Steam from the desktop or application launcher.
- Install any pending client update and try again.
- Contact Steam Support if Steam repeatedly freezes or crashes.
On a managed or restricted computer, operating-system permissions or organizational policies may also limit changes to storage, networking, installation, or security settings. That is separate from Steam’s menu location.
If the Steam Overlay fails to open, confirm that it is enabled, launch the game through Steam, and check whether another overlay or utility is interfering. Valve lists examples of software that can conflict with controller or overlay functionality, including some input emulators, capture tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, and security software; such conflicts are not universal.
For client, Big Picture, Family, Offline Mode, Cloud, and account-related problems, use Steam Support.
