The Xbox app on Windows does not have one universal “content restrictions” switch. The correct place to change a restriction depends on what is being blocked:

- A game or app: Microsoft Family Safety, under Apps and games.
- A website or search: Microsoft Family Safety’s Edge content filters.
- Multiplayer, messaging, clubs, friends, or user-created content: Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.
- An adult account treated like a child: the Microsoft account’s birth date, family-group membership, and possibly a Windows Family Safety refresh.
In most cases, change the account-level setting first, then sign out of the Xbox app and Microsoft Store and sign back in with the intended Microsoft account.
Change a child’s game or app restriction
You need to be signed in as the family group’s Family organizer. The affected Microsoft account must also belong to that Family Safety group.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Open account.microsoft.com/family or family.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with the organizer account.
- Select the relevant child or family member.
- Select the platform that applies, such as Windows or Xbox.
- Open Apps and games.
- Find the game or app. Open its more-options menu and choose Block app or Unblock app.
If you are setting a usage limit rather than completely blocking the game, select the game or app and configure the permitted amount of time and the schedule. Limits may need to be configured separately for each relevant family member, app, and platform.
Only a Family organizer can block or unblock apps through Family Safety. If the child’s account is not listed, or you can see the family group but cannot edit the setting, check that you are using the organizer account rather than the child’s account or an ordinary family-member account.
Change the age or game filter
If a game is rejected because it is above the account’s permitted age rating, inspect the family member’s Apps and games controls for both Windows and Xbox, where applicable. The exact labels can vary as Microsoft updates the web experience.

A child account’s restrictions can be affected by its recorded birth date and by the permissions assigned to the family group. Changing a local Xbox app setting will not override an account-level age or Family Safety restriction.

Change website and search restrictions
Website filtering is managed separately from game and app restrictions, and it is tied to Microsoft Edge rather than being a universal filter for every browser.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and sign in as the Family organizer.
- Select the relevant family member.
- Select the Edge platform.
- Open Content filters, or the website-and-search filtering controls shown for that account.
- Choose the required option: enable or disable inappropriate-site filtering, add blocked or allowed sites, or turn on Only use allowed websites.
For these controls to apply, the family member must be signed in to Microsoft Edge with the Microsoft account being managed. These settings do not automatically filter Chrome, Firefox, or other browsers. If the user can access the site in another browser, that may be expected behavior rather than a failure of the Xbox app.
Change multiplayer, chat, clubs, or community-content restrictions
A message saying that multiplayer, communication, clubs, friends and followers, or community-created content is unavailable is usually an Xbox privacy and online-safety restriction, not a Microsoft Family Safety game-age filter.

A child or otherwise managed account may not be able to change these permissions itself. The organizer or parent who manages the account may need to make the change.
What to do if an adult account is still restricted
An adult can continue to receive child-style restrictions if the account’s birth date is incorrect, the account remains in a Microsoft family group, or a Windows device is still applying old Family Safety settings.
1. Check the account and family group
Review the Microsoft account’s recorded birth date and sign in to the Microsoft family-group page. If an organizer controls the restriction, that organizer must change it. An adult family member cannot necessarily remove a setting imposed by the organizer.

- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
cmd, then open Command Prompt. Use an elevated Command Prompt if Windows requests administrator permission. - Run:
schtasks /run /tn "MicrosoftWindowsShellFamilySafetyRefreshTask"
- Restart the computer.
Repeat the procedure on each affected Windows device. This refreshes the local device’s Family Safety state; it does not grant permission to an account that is still managed by an organizer.
If the change does not appear in the Xbox app
Account changes can take time to appear in an already-running app. Work through these steps in order:
- Close and restart the Xbox app.
- Sign out of the Xbox app, then sign back in with the intended Microsoft account.
- Open the Microsoft Store and verify that it is also using the intended account. The Xbox app and Store can be signed in with different accounts.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Family Safety and confirm that the affected account is actually in the family group and that the change was made for the correct platform, family member, app, or game.
- If a time limit is malfunctioning, remove the limit and add it again.
- For a child’s Windows account, confirm that it is a standard user, not an administrator. An administrator can alter or interfere with Family Safety settings.
You can also use Windows’ repair or reset options for the Xbox app if its local state appears stale. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options, then try Repair. Use Reset only if necessary, since it removes the app’s local data and may require you to sign in again.
Repairing or resetting the Xbox app is app troubleshooting, not a replacement for changing the restriction in Family Safety or Xbox privacy settings. If the account-level permission is still denied, resetting the app will not override it.

Why there is no single Xbox PC restriction switch
The Xbox app is the place where the restriction becomes visible, but the authority may belong to several Microsoft systems. Family Safety controls family membership, app and game access, usage limits, and Edge filtering. Xbox privacy and online-safety settings control social and multiplayer permissions. The Microsoft account supplies identity, age, and family-group relationships, while Windows and Edge enforce some of the resulting policies locally.
That separation explains why changing an option inside the Xbox app—or reinstalling the app—may not solve the problem. Identify the type of restriction first, change it in the corresponding Microsoft control panel, and then refresh the signed-in apps and device.
Important limitations
- Microsoft can change the labels and layout between the Xbox app, Family Safety website, Family Safety mobile app, Windows, and Xbox account pages.
- Only a Family organizer can manage many child-account limits and permissions.
- Family Safety web filtering described here applies to Microsoft Edge when the managed user is signed in; it is not a universal browser filter.
- Settings may need to be repeated for different family members, devices, platforms, apps, or games.
- Changing an account’s birth date may not immediately remove restrictions already cached on a Windows device; use the documented refresh procedure where appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I unblock a game in the Xbox app on PC?
Use Microsoft Family Safety at account.microsoft.com/family or family.microsoft.com. Select the family member, choose Windows or Xbox, open Apps and games, and then block, unblock, or limit the game or app. You must be the Family organizer.

Do Xbox Family Safety website restrictions work in Chrome or Firefox?
No. Microsoft Family Safety website filters apply to Microsoft Edge when the managed user is signed in with the relevant Microsoft account. They do not automatically filter every browser installed on the PC.
Why can’t I use multiplayer or chat in the Xbox PC app?
Check Xbox privacy and online-safety settings. Multiplayer, voice or text chat, clubs, friends and followers, and community-created content can have separate permissions from game-age restrictions.
Why is my adult Microsoft account still restricted?
Check the Microsoft account’s birth date and family-group membership. If an adult organizer’s Windows device still applies old restrictions, run the FamilySafetyRefreshTask from Command Prompt and restart the computer. Repeat this on each affected device.
The Bottom Line
Use Microsoft Family Safety for a child’s game, app, time, or Edge website restrictions, and use Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for multiplayer, chat, clubs, and community content. If an adult remains restricted, check the account’s birth date and family-group role, refresh Family Safety on each affected Windows device, then sign back in to both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store.
