Scope note: This is a retrospective of the five controllers TechRadar hardware editor Rhys Wood personally tested or reviewed during 2025—not a claim that these are the five best controllers available in 2026.
The selection is deliberately broad. It includes a first-party Switch 2 controller, premium modular pads for PlayStation and Xbox, a feature-rich midrange option, and a cheap wired spare. They are not direct competitors, so the useful question is not “which ranks first?” but “which one fits your platform, budget, hands, and tolerance for compromises?”

Quick verdict
| Controller | Best for | Platforms | Key strength | Main compromise | Historical price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Switch 2 owners | Switch 2 | Build quality, ergonomics and long estimated battery life | Not a universal PC, Xbox or PlayStation pad | $84.99 / £74.99 / AU$119.95 |
| Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded | Premium modular PlayStation users | PS5, Xbox or PC, depending on version | Swappable layouts and Hall-effect sticks | Very expensive; platform versions are separate | $209.99 / £179.99 |
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2 | Feature value | Xbox, Switch or PC, depending on version | TMR sticks, remapping and trigger locks | Separate platform editions and wireless limitations to check | $59.99 / £49.99 / about AU$90 |
| Nacon Revolution X Unlimited | Premium Xbox and PC users | Xbox and PC | On-controller LCD configuration | The screen may not justify a roughly $200 price | $199.99 / £179.99 / about AU$300 |

How to interpret this list
This was not a standardized laboratory ranking. The source article identifies the products as personally tested or reviewed, but does not publish a common test duration, game list, latency equipment, dead-zone measurements, firmware versions, wireless conditions, or a battery-test protocol. Claims such as comfort, value and “best” are therefore editorial judgments rather than directly comparable measurements.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
That distinction matters. A $30 wired controller intended as a local-multiplayer spare cannot fairly lose to a $210 modular controller simply because it has fewer features. The categories below reflect the roles the products actually serve.
1. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: best first-party option for Switch 2
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is the straightforward choice for someone who wants a substantial Nintendo pad rather than Joy-Con 2 controllers. The original review praised its build quality and smooth-feeling thumbsticks, along with two rear buttons that can be remapped on a per-game basis.
The reviewer estimated roughly 40–50 hours of battery life. That is an editorial estimate, not a standardized measurement, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed runtime. At the historical $84.99 price, its appeal depends on how much value you place on comfortable full-size ergonomics, rear controls and avoiding frequent charging.

Buy it if
- You primarily play on Nintendo Switch 2.
- You want a traditional full-size controller instead of Joy-Con 2.
- You will use rear-button assignments in games that support them.
- You prefer first-party hardware and Nintendo-focused integration.
Think twice if
- You need one pad for Xbox, PlayStation and PC.
- You require a detailed latency, battery or durability comparison.
- You want extensive modular parts or competitive rear-paddle customization.
Do not assume that Switch 2 compatibility automatically means compatibility with the original Switch, PC, Android, NFC, headset audio, motion controls or wake-from-sleep functionality. Confirm those features for the exact model and firmware on Nintendo’s official site before buying. The original article does not provide a complete technical specification table for those questions.
Rank #2
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
2. Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded: best premium modular choice
The Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is the most specialized controller here. Its defining feature is the modular control layout: modules can be swapped to create symmetrical, asymmetrical or southpaw stick arrangements. The revised fight-pad module and Hall-effect thumbsticks add further appeal for players who want a controller that can be configured around different genres.
The original article positioned it as the reviewer’s best premium PS5 controller tested at that point. However, it was still presented as a preorder product expected to release in late September 2025. That means readers should distinguish pre-release hands-on impressions from final retail availability and later firmware or hardware revisions.
PlayStation and Xbox versions are sold separately. Never assume that the PS5 edition and Xbox edition have identical features, wireless behavior or console support. Check the current product page at Turtle Beach for the exact version, included modules, warranty and spare-part availability.

- You want to change stick layouts or use a fight-pad module.
- You are comfortable paying a premium for customization.
- Hall-effect sensing and replaceable control modules matter to you.
- You have confirmed the correct PlayStation, Xbox or PC version.
Think twice if
- You want adaptive triggers, haptics, motion control or every first-party PS5 feature.
- You need a low-cost, lightweight controller.
- You expect “Hall effect” to make the entire controller immune to failure.
Magnetic Hall-effect sensing removes the conventional potentiometer wear mechanism associated with one common form of stick drift. It does not make buttons, triggers, firmware, wireless components or mechanical assemblies failure-proof. At more than $200 historically, warranty terms, return rights, replacement modules and long-term support are as important as the initial feel.
Rank #3
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
3. 8BitDo Ultimate 2: best feature set in the midrange
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 packs unusually many enthusiast features into a much lower historical price than the two premium models. The original coverage highlighted TMR thumbsticks, two extra remappable bumpers, digital trigger locks and customizable RGB lighting around the sticks.
TMR and Hall-effect sticks are both magnetic-sensing approaches. A TMR label alone does not guarantee better accuracy or longevity: calibration, firmware, dead zones, mechanical construction and quality control still matter. The practical advantage for most buyers is that magnetic sensing avoids the traditional friction-based potentiometer mechanism, not that drift becomes impossible.
RGB lighting is a useful example of a feature with a cost. It can add visual customization, but it also consumes wireless battery power. The controller is sold in separate Xbox, Switch and PC-oriented versions, so the word “Ultimate 2” is not enough to establish compatibility. Confirm the exact edition at 8BitDo.

- You like upper extra bumpers more than traditional rear paddles.
- You are willing to disable RGB when battery life matters.
- You have checked whether your chosen edition supports wireless play on your platform.
Think twice if
- You want a single controller to work wirelessly across every console.
- You need platform-specific features such as PlayStation haptics or adaptive triggers.
- You dislike companion software for remapping and firmware updates.
Before purchasing, check whether a charging dock is included, how profiles are stored, which app is required, whether RGB can be disabled, and whether the D-pad suits your games. Those details can vary by platform edition and are not fully specified in the original roundup.

4. Nacon Revolution X Unlimited: best premium Xbox/PC controller with onboard controls
The Nacon Revolution X Unlimited’s unusual selling point is its built-in LCD display. A dedicated button opens the display interface, which is intended to provide access to settings, mapping and wireless-pairing options without relying entirely on a phone or computer. The original reviewer found the interface relatively restrained rather than overloaded with menus.
That is a usability judgment, not proof that the screen improves gameplay. At a historical $199.99, buyers should ask whether they would rather spend the money on better ergonomics, additional rear controls, longer battery life, or a simpler controller.
The controller is aimed at Xbox and PC users. Xbox wireless accessories can use platform-specific protocols and licensing rather than ordinary Bluetooth, so PC compatibility does not automatically mean identical wireless operation on Xbox. Confirm the connection method, headset support, firmware requirements and licensing at Nacon’s official site.
Buy it if
- You want to adjust settings directly from the controller.
- You value integrated headset and microphone controls.
- You are comfortable paying for an enthusiast Xbox/PC accessory.
Think twice if
- The LCD screen is an unnecessary novelty to you.
- You need PS5 or Switch support.
- You prioritize simple software, low price or easily replaceable parts.
Ask specifically what the screen can display, whether it can be disabled, how readable it is from a normal seating position, how many remappable controls are available and how battery life changes with the display active. The original article does not answer all of those ownership questions.
Best Value

5. Hori Horipad Turbo: best cheap wired spare
The Hori Horipad Turbo is not a budget rival to the other four controllers. It is a practical second pad for Switch local multiplayer or retro games, where a low purchase price matters more than wireless freedom and premium materials.
Its built-in Turbo button can automate repeated inputs, which may suit some retro games. Turbo is not appropriate for every game or online setting, however, and should not be confused with a competitive-performance feature. The controller is wired, lightweight and plasticky, with no gyro and no vibration.
Buy it if
- You need an inexpensive spare controller.
- You mostly play docked and do not mind a cable.
- You want Turbo for suitable retro or repetitive-input games.
Think twice if
- You expect wireless play, rumble, motion controls or premium materials.
- You need a controller for competitive modern games.
- You are buying for Switch 2 without confirming the exact model’s licensing and compatibility.
Hori sells several similarly named products. Verify the exact Horipad model and its Nintendo licensing at Hori’s official store; do not treat every “Horipad Turbo” listing as interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStick technology: what Hall effect and TMR actually mean
Traditional analog sticks generally use potentiometers, whose contact surfaces can wear and contribute to inaccurate readings commonly called stick drift. Hall-effect and TMR designs use magnetic sensing instead. That removes the conventional friction-based sensor wear mechanism, but it does not eliminate every cause of drift or inaccurate input.
Sticks can still be affected by mechanical wear, contamination, calibration errors, firmware problems, damaged springs, poor quality control or other electronics. “Drift-proof” is therefore an overclaim. Treat Hall effect and TMR as useful design choices, not lifetime guarantees. The technical distinction is explained in the cited WIRED controller guide and PC Gamer’s TMR discussion.
Compatibility is more than a platform logo
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact console | Switch 2, original Switch, Xbox and PS5 support are not interchangeable. |
| Connection type | A pad may work wirelessly on one platform but only by USB on another. |
| Wireless standard | Bluetooth, 2.4GHz dongles and licensed Xbox wireless systems have different requirements. |
| Platform features | Gyro, haptics, adaptive triggers, headset audio and console wake may be absent. |
| Version | Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC editions may be separate products. |
| Software | Remapping and firmware updates may require Windows, mobile software or a specific app. |
| Accessories | Missing dongles, docks or replacement modules can materially change ownership cost. |
A controller that works on PC is not automatically a good Xbox or PlayStation controller. Confirm wired and wireless modes, official licensing, headset support, motion features and included accessories for the precise model before ordering.
Which premium features are actually useful?
- Rear buttons: Useful for moving, jumping or reloading without removing a thumb from the stick. Two well-positioned controls can be better than four difficult-to-reach paddles.
- Trigger stops: Helpful for shooters, but they reduce the analog travel needed for racing-game acceleration and throttle control.
- Swappable modules: Valuable if you genuinely want different stick layouts or a fight pad; unnecessary if you prefer one familiar configuration.
- Profiles and remapping: Most useful when saved onboard, so settings do not depend entirely on a companion app.
- RGB: Cosmetic and potentially battery-consuming. It should not decide a purchase by itself.
- Built-in displays: Convenient for some users, but a screen is not automatically better than reliable software or simple physical controls.
- Turbo: Useful in appropriate retro contexts, but not a universal advantage and potentially unsuitable for competitive or online play.
- Clicky controls: They can feel quick and precise, but are louder and may become tiring compared with softer buttons.
Before you buy
- Choose the exact console or PC connection you need.
- Check whether wireless operation requires a dongle, licensed protocol or USB cable.
- Confirm support for gyro, vibration, haptics, adaptive triggers and headset audio if those features matter.
- Compare battery claims with the controller’s charging method and whether the battery is replaceable.
- Check warranty length, return policy, spare parts and replacement dongle availability.
- Install required firmware before judging remapping, wireless behavior or stick calibration.
- Do not use historical launch prices as current value evidence. Verify the live price, stock, region, tax and shipping.
Alternatives that change the decision
The five picks are not a complete 2026 market ranking. Later coverage has highlighted alternatives including the GameSir G7 Pro, PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless, Razer Raiju V3 Pro and newer Switch 2 accessories. The cited WIRED roundup also lists the PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless for Xbox/PC and Sony’s DualSense as a PS5-focused option.
The GameSir G7 Pro is particularly relevant to PC users and wired Xbox users seeking TMR sticks and enthusiast controls, but wired Xbox operation means it is not a complete substitute for a wireless Xbox pad. A standard Sony DualSense is a better fit for PS5 owners who prioritize adaptive triggers and haptics over modularity, while the DualSense Edge is the first-party premium alternative for users who want Sony’s ecosystem.
