You may still see the old extension in the browser, but switching it on does not prove that Epic’s proxy service is still operational.
If you mean Epic Games Launcher, there is no standard Epic-provided VPN switch. The launcher has a Use Proxy setting for enterprise or academic networks, which is a proxy configuration rather than a VPN supplied by Epic.

First, identify which “Epic” you mean

Epic Privacy Browser: the historical activation steps
These are the steps that were used to activate Epic Privacy Browser’s bundled encrypted proxy. They are still useful for locating the old control, but they should not be treated as confirmation that Epic’s own VPN currently works. Epic’s privacy documentation describes the feature, while a July 2025 post from an Epic team administrator on the official support forum said that the VPN/encrypted-proxy service had been discontinued because it was too costly and time-consuming to maintain. Epic recommended disabling the old proxy extension and using another VPN extension or mobile VPN application instead. - Enter
chrome://extensions/in the address bar. You can also open the browser’s Extensions page through its interface. - Look for the bundled Epic Encrypted Proxy or Epic Encrypted Proxy/VPN extension.
- Turn the extension on if it is disabled.
- Return to the toolbar and look to the right of the address bar for the plug or socket icon.
- Click the icon to turn the proxy on or off. In older versions, the control could also offer a choice of proxy country. Older Epic instructions described the icon as red when off and green when on.
Important: an enabled extension and a colored toolbar icon are not enough to establish that the connection is working today. Open a site that displays your public IP address, or check a service you trust, before assuming that your traffic is passing through a proxy. Do not interpret the old feature as a guarantee of anonymity, universal website access, or current server availability.

How to tell whether the old Epic proxy is actually working
- Enable the extension and click its toolbar control.
- Visit a website that shows your public IP address and note the result before and after activation.
- Try more than one ordinary website. A single site can have its own blocking, authentication, or compatibility problem.
- Disable the proxy and compare the connection. If the IP address does not change, or the browser cannot load pages while the proxy is enabled, the old service may not be connecting.
Epic historically described the encrypted proxy as encrypting traffic between the browser and Epic’s servers and hiding the user’s real IP address from websites. That description belongs to the product’s historical feature documentation; it does not establish that the discontinued service remains available.
If the VPN or proxy icon is missing
Start with the least destructive check:
- Open
chrome://extensions/. - Search for the Epic proxy extension.
- If it appears, check whether it is disabled and enable it if the browser permits.
- Restart Epic Privacy Browser and check the toolbar again.
Older Epic forum guidance noted that the bundled proxy and ad-blocking extensions sometimes had to be enabled manually after installation. Epic’s legacy troubleshooting advice also suggested opening Settings or Preferences, using Reset Epic, and restarting the browser if the icon did not return. Use Reset Epic only as a last resort. Before resetting, preserve or export anything important, including bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing data, and custom settings. A reset may remove or alter browser configuration.

If the extension is absent, cannot be enabled, or remains unable to connect, repeated resets are unlikely to restore a service that Epic’s later support guidance says was discontinued. In that situation, use a currently maintained VPN application or browser extension from a provider you have independently evaluated rather than assuming that the old Epic control can be repaired.
A website fails when the proxy is enabled
VPN and proxy traffic is commonly blocked or challenged by websites. Epic’s guidance says its Umbrella control can disable protections globally or selectively for a particular site. Depending on the browser version, Umbrella can control the encrypted proxy, ad blocker, fingerprinting protection, and related privacy features.
If one website will not load:
- Open the site’s Umbrella or privacy-controls menu.
- Temporarily disable only the encrypted proxy first.
- Reload the page.
- If necessary, test the other protections individually rather than disabling everything at once.
- Re-enable protections after testing, especially on unfamiliar sites.
Epic’s Umbrella troubleshooting guidance explains this approach for sites that reject proxy traffic, request repeated authentication, or otherwise fail under Epic’s privacy features.

Epic Games Launcher: use the proxy setting instead
If you are trying to connect Epic Games Launcher on a work, school, or university network, do not look for the Epic Privacy Browser plug icon. Epic Games documents a proxy setting for the launcher, not an Epic-operated VPN.

- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open the menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Find and enable Use Proxy.
- Enter the proxy in
IP:PORTformat. - Restart the launcher.
The proxy address and port must come from your network administrator or proxy provider. A VPN subscription, a random address found online, or the IP address of your own computer is not automatically a valid launcher proxy.

For the exact current launcher fields and configuration syntax, use Epic Games’ official proxy support article. These settings route launcher requests through a specified proxy; they do not turn Epic Games Launcher into a VPN client.

Yes. Epic’s account-country guidance says that active VPN or hosting services must be disabled when changing the country on an Epic Games account. A VPN can therefore interfere with regional or account workflows instead of being something Epic Games requires you to enable.
If you are changing your account country, disable the VPN or hosting service first and follow Epic’s country-change guidance. Do not use a VPN to misrepresent your location for purchases, account settings, or regional access.

What to do now
- Using Epic Privacy Browser: check
chrome://extensions/for the old Epic Encrypted Proxy extension, but expect that Epic’s own proxy service may no longer connect. - Using Epic Games Launcher on a restricted network: ask the network administrator for the correct proxy address and port, then use Settings → Use Proxy.
- Trying to change your Epic account country: disable active VPN or hosting services first.
- Trying to access a site that rejects the browser proxy: use the Umbrella controls to test the site with the encrypted proxy disabled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Epic Games Launcher have a built-in VPN?
No ordinary VPN switch is documented for Epic Games Launcher. Epic documents a Use Proxy option for enterprise or academic networks, plus command-line and configuration-file proxy methods. A proxy is not the same as an Epic-provided VPN.
Why can I still see the Epic VPN extension in Epic Privacy Browser?
The browser may still contain the legacy extension even though Epic support said its encrypted-proxy service was discontinued in July 2025. The extension being present or enabled does not prove that its servers still provide a working connection.

Why does a website stop working when the Epic proxy is enabled?
Some websites block or challenge VPN and proxy traffic. Use Epic’s Umbrella controls to disable the encrypted proxy for that site, test the page, and re-enable protections afterward where appropriate.
The Bottom Line
There is no current, generally supported “enable VPN” switch for Epic Games Launcher. In Epic Privacy Browser, the old feature was enabled through chrome://extensions/ and the toolbar plug icon, but Epic support reported that the underlying encrypted-proxy service was discontinued in July 2025. For the launcher, use the documented proxy setting only when you have a legitimate network proxy and its correct IP:PORT details.
