Nintendo Switch 2 is a more powerful evolution of the original hybrid console, not a complete departure from it. It launched in the United States and other major markets on June 5, 2025, with a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD, HDR and VRR support, up to 120Hz handheld output, up to 4K docked output in compatible games, 256GB of internal storage, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, and broad—but not universal—compatibility with original Switch software.
For U.S. shoppers, the price needs a date attached: as of August 12, 2026, the announced MSRP is $449.99 before tax. Nintendo has announced that it will rise to $499.99 before tax on September 1, 2026. GameChat is also no longer in its free introductory period; after March 31, 2026, it requires Nintendo Switch Online.

1. It launched on June 5, 2025
Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the United States and other major markets on June 5, 2025. It is the direct successor to the original Nintendo Switch, but the basic idea has not changed: it is a console that can work as a handheld, tabletop system, or TV-connected home console.
The important distinction is that Switch 2 is an evolution of the hybrid-console formula, not an entirely different type of gaming device. Its upgrades focus on performance, display quality, storage, communication features, controllers, and compatibility with much of the original Switch library.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
2. The U.S. price is date-sensitive
For U.S. buyers, the announced price depends on when the purchase is made:
| Purchase date | Announced U.S. MSRP | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Through August 31, 2026 | $449.99 before tax | The original U.S. suggested retail price |
| Beginning September 1, 2026 | $499.99 before tax | Nintendo’s announced revised U.S. MSRP |
Those are suggested retail prices, not guarantees of what every retailer will charge. Retail promotions, bundles, stock levels, and local sales tax can change the final price. As of August 12, 2026, the relevant announced U.S. price before tax is still $449.99; $499.99 is the scheduled price beginning September 1.
3. Nintendo attributed the increase to market conditions
Nintendo said the price revisions were driven by changes in market conditions and would apply across multiple regions. The company did not publish a component-by-component explanation showing exactly how much each part of the console costs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That means the increase should be described as a market-driven pricing revision rather than as a documented increase tied to one specific component. It also means shoppers should compare the actual retailer price and bundle contents rather than assuming every package will rise in exactly the same way.
4. The handheld screen is a 7.9-inch LCD
Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD display, making it substantially larger than the original Switch handheld screen. Nintendo specifies a 1080p resolution and support for HDR and variable refresh rate features.
The screen is still an LCD rather than an OLED panel. Its improvements are primarily its larger size, higher resolution, HDR support, and refresh-rate capabilities. Those specifications do not mean that every game will look or perform identically; the result depends on the software.
5. The display can reach 120 Hz, but that does not make every game 120 fps
The handheld display supports refresh rates of up to 120 Hz. Compatible software and circumstances can also make use of VRR, or variable refresh rate, to help the display adjust to changes in a game’s output.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A 120Hz panel is not the same thing as a promise that games run at 120 frames per second. A game must be designed or updated to produce a higher frame rate, and the game’s resolution, visual effects, performance mode, and other technical choices still matter. Treat 120 Hz as a display capability, not a universal Switch 2 performance target.
6. TV output can reach up to 4K
When connected through the updated Switch 2 dock, compatible games and televisions can display output at up to 4K resolution. This is a ceiling for supported combinations, not a claim that every Switch 2 game renders natively at 4K.
Some games may use a lower internal rendering resolution, reconstruction, or a performance mode while still outputting a 4K signal. The specific result depends on the game, its Switch 2 support, the television, and the selected settings. The safe buying expectation is improved TV output potential, not universal native 4K rendering.
7. Internal storage is 256GB
Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage, although some of that capacity is reserved for the operating system and other system data. The usable amount is therefore lower than the number printed on the box.
That is a meaningful improvement over the original Switch’s internal storage, but large modern games can still fill it quickly. Buyers who expect to keep a substantial digital library, downloadable expansions, or game-key-card downloads installed should plan for additional storage.
8. Expansion uses microSD Express
Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 storage expansion. A conventional microSD card—the type commonly used with the original Switch—is not the normal solution for storing Switch 2 software.
Before buying a card, check that it is specifically a microSD Express model and that its capacity and compatibility meet Nintendo’s requirements. Nintendo lists a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card among its Switch 2 hardware offerings, but the card is an accessory rather than something buyers should assume is included with every console package.
This is one of the most important differences for existing Switch owners: a large collection of ordinary microSD cards does not automatically become useful Switch 2 software storage.
9. Game-key cards are download keys, not complete games
A game-key card is a physical card that authorizes the console to download the full game over the internet. It is not the same as a traditional game card containing the complete game data.
After the download finishes, the game-key card must remain inserted to start the game, just as a conventional physical game card normally must. Buyers should account for the initial internet download, available internal or microSD Express storage, and the need to keep the card with the system when choosing between physical and digital editions.
10. Battery life is approximately 2 to 6.5 hours
Nintendo lists approximate battery life of 2 to 6.5 hours. The actual result depends on the game, display and wireless functions, brightness, and other usage conditions. This is an official range, not a guarantee that every title will last for the same amount of time.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Nintendo also lists an approximate three-hour charging time when the console is powered off or in sleep mode. Charging while playing, using a different power source, or changing system settings can affect the practical result.
11. Joy-Con 2 attaches magnetically
The included Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to the console with magnetic connectors rather than the original Switch attachment method. They retain motion controls and add HD Rumble 2.
The new attachment design is useful for handheld play, but it creates an important compatibility distinction: original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 in supported situations, yet they cannot physically attach to the sides of the Switch 2 console.
12. Each Joy-Con 2 can work as a mouse in compatible games
Each Joy-Con 2 can provide mouse-style controls in games that support the feature. This opens up a different control option for certain interfaces, strategy games, aiming systems, and other software designed around pointer input.
It is not a universal replacement for a desktop mouse. Mouse control is game-specific, so its usefulness depends on whether a particular title implements it and how that implementation feels for the task.

13. GameChat opens from a dedicated C Button
Joy-Con 2 includes a dedicated C Button that opens the GameChat menu. Nintendo presents GameChat as a system-level communication feature rather than merely a voice-chat mode buried inside a particular game.
The system-level approach lets players access supported communication functions while playing compatible software. It does not remove the need for an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, current system software, or the required Nintendo Switch Online membership after the introductory access period.
14. GameChat supports voice, video, and screen sharing
GameChat can support:
- Voice chat with friends
- Video chat
- Sharing a player’s game screen
- Playing together in supported situations
A GameChat room can include up to 12 friends. Up to four people can use video chat and/or share their game screens at the same time. Those limits mean the feature is designed for a small group rather than a large public broadcast or general-purpose video-conferencing room.
15. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera
Switch 2 has a built-in microphone for voice chat, but it does not have a built-in camera. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera, such as the separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Nintendo says typical third-party USB cameras may work, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every model. If video chat matters to you, confirm compatibility before buying a webcam. Do not assume that any camera that works with a computer will necessarily work with Switch 2.
The camera is an optional purchase for voice-only GameChat. It is not required to use the console as a handheld or TV system, and it should not be treated as part of every standard console package.
16. GameChat now requires Nintendo Switch Online
The free open-access period for GameChat ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. After that period, GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, a persistent internet connection, and current system software.
That requirement is an ongoing cost consideration for anyone buying Switch 2 primarily for its communication features. The membership requirement is separate from the optional camera: subscribing enables the service, while a compatible USB camera is needed only for video chat.
17. GameChat includes parental-control requirements
For users under 16, Nintendo requires parent or guardian involvement in GameChat setup. Nintendo’s support guidance describes parental-control configuration and phone-number registration requirements for younger users.
Families should complete that setup before expecting a child to join a GameChat room. The requirement is part of the service’s communication safeguards, not a setting that can simply be ignored by creating a standard child account.
18. GameShare lets one owner share supported software
GameShare allows a Switch 2 host to share compatible software with other users in supported situations. It is not universal multiplayer access for every Switch game; the host game must support the feature and the session must meet Nintendo’s conditions.
There is also a difference between local and internet GameShare:

19. Compatibility with original Switch games is broad, not universal
Switch 2 can play many compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. That makes the system more attractive to existing owners who want a new console without abandoning their previous library.
However, Nintendo also publishes lists of unsupported games and games with compatibility issues. Some software may work with limitations, require an update, or behave differently from the original system. The accurate claim is many compatible Switch games—not all Switch games working perfectly.
Before upgrading, check the official compatibility information for the particular games you care about most. A short list of favorite games is more useful than assuming the entire library will transfer without exceptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors20. Some games receive free or paid Switch 2 upgrades
Certain original Switch games receive updates or upgrade packs that add content, improve performance, or otherwise enhance the experience on Switch 2. Some upgrades are free; others are paid.
Availability and pricing depend on the individual game. An upgrade is not a blanket entitlement for every Switch title, and owning the original game does not by itself prove that a Switch 2 enhancement exists. Check the specific game’s listing and Nintendo’s compatibility information before treating an upgrade as part of the purchase value.
21. Original accessories have mixed compatibility
Existing owners should not assume that every original Switch accessory carries over unchanged.
- Some original Joy-Con and Pro Controller accessories can pair wirelessly.
- Original Joy-Con cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console.
- The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Conventional microSD cards are not the normal software-storage solution for Switch 2.
- The original HDMI cable is not the recommended cable for maximizing Switch 2 performance.
This mixed compatibility is important when calculating the real cost of an upgrade. A household may be able to reuse some controllers while still needing a new dock, appropriate storage, or other Switch 2-specific accessories.

22. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds GameCube classics
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members receive access to a growing Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library on Switch 2. Nintendo’s launch announcement identified F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II among the initial titles.
The GameCube library is a benefit of the higher Nintendo Switch Online tier, not a feature that makes every GameCube game available automatically. The catalog can grow over time, so the current list should be checked when deciding whether the subscription is worthwhile.
23. The best purchase depends on how you will use it
Switch 2 makes the strongest case for buyers who want one system for handheld and TV play, want access to new Switch 2 software, or have a large collection of original Switch games that are confirmed to be compatible. The larger 1080p display, HDR, VRR, higher refresh-rate ceiling, up-to-4K docked output, and upgraded controllers are meaningful platform improvements on paper.
The purchase is less straightforward if your main expectation is universal native 4K, 120-fps gaming, perfect compatibility with every original Switch title, or a complete communication setup in the box. Those expectations go beyond Nintendo’s specifications and support conditions.

Do not assume that the standard package includes the following items unless you are looking at a specific, separately verified bundle:
- A camera
- A Joy-Con 2 charging grip
- A Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
- A carrying case
- A microSD Express card
Which accessories are worth buying depends on your use:
- Storage: Consider a microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 if you plan to download several large games or keep game-key-card downloads installed.
- Video chat: Consider the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera only if you want GameChat video. Voice chat uses the built-in microphone.
- Traditional controls: The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is the more natural choice for players who prefer a conventional controller, especially for long TV sessions. It is not required for ordinary play.
- Portability: A Nintendo Switch 2 carrying case is sensible for handheld owners, but verify that it is made for the larger Switch 2 hardware and that it fits any accessories you intend to carry.
- Online communication: Budget for Nintendo Switch Online if GameChat is a major reason for the purchase, because the free access period has ended.
Switch 2 buying checklist
- Compare the purchase date with the $449.99 pre-tax MSRP through August 31, 2026 and the announced $499.99 MSRP beginning September 1.
- Check whether your most-played original Switch games are compatible and whether any Switch 2 upgrade is free, paid, or unavailable.
- Choose microSD Express—not a conventional microSD card—if you need more software storage.
- Decide whether you need GameChat voice only or video chat with a compatible USB camera.
- Include Nintendo Switch Online in the cost if you will use GameChat after the open-access period.
- Verify which controllers, dock, case, camera, storage card, and other accessories are actually included in the bundle you are considering.
- If you use GameShare, confirm whether the session is local or online and whether the specific game supports it.
Prices, subscription requirements, game compatibility, accessory availability, and bundle contents can change. The price details above are date-qualified to August 12, 2026, and product-specific information should be rechecked at the time of purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Nintendo Switch 2 cost?
In the U.S., the announced MSRP is $449.99 before tax through August 31, 2026. Nintendo announced a $499.99 before-tax MSRP beginning September 1, 2026. Retailer prices, bundles, promotions, and taxes may differ.
Can Nintendo Switch 2 play original Nintendo Switch games?
Yes, but not every game is guaranteed to work perfectly. Nintendo Switch 2 plays many compatible physical and digital Switch games, while some titles are unsupported or have known compatibility issues. Check the individual game before upgrading.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for GameChat?
GameChat requires Nintendo Switch Online after the free open-access period ended on March 31, 2026. It also requires a Nintendo Account, persistent internet connection, and current system software. A compatible USB camera is needed only for video chat; the console has a built-in microphone for voice chat.
What kind of memory card does Nintendo Switch 2 use?
Use a microSD Express card. Conventional microSD cards used with the original Switch are not the normal expansion path for Switch 2 software.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Nintendo Switch 2 is a more capable version of the hybrid-console concept, with a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD, HDR, VRR, up to 120Hz handheld output, up to 4K docked output in compatible games, 256GB of storage, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, and system-level GameChat. The main buying cautions are the scheduled U.S. price increase to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, the need for microSD Express storage, the post-March 2026 Nintendo Switch Online requirement for GameChat, and the fact that compatibility and performance improvements vary by game.
