To shrink a Minecraft save, remove stored chunk data with a tool that supports your edition—but back up first, because deleting chunks can remove builds and other content. Java players can use MCA Selector to choose chunks; Bedrock Editor’s Chunk Management can delete a defined region when available for the player’s setup. If you only need to free cloud storage, deleting a duplicate save copy is a different operation: it does not reduce the world data in the copy you keep.
First, identify what is taking up space
There are two different problems that can sound like “making a world smaller”:
- The save itself is too large: remove selected chunk data. This changes the world and may erase anything in the deleted areas.
- Your storage is full because of extra saves: remove an unwanted local or cloud copy. This frees space used by that copy, but does not trim the chunks in the world you continue to use.
Choose the method based on your Minecraft edition and device. The documented chunk-editing workflows below are for Java Edition with a third-party editor and Bedrock Edition with Bedrock Editor; they are not universal instructions for every console or mobile setup.
Before deleting chunks or saves
- Check your edition, device, and goal. Decide whether you need to reduce the active save’s data or remove an extra stored copy.
- Make an independent backup. Keep it somewhere separate from the world you plan to edit. Minecraft’s Android backup instructions explain copying accessible world files and recommend backing up before file operations. The exact backup procedure depends on your device and where its saves are stored.
- Identify areas you can afford to lose. Check for builds, storage, paths, or other important content before selecting chunks or a region.
- After editing, open the world and check it. Confirm important builds, storage, and travel routes are intact before deciding whether to discard the backup.
Java Edition: remove selected chunks with MCA Selector
The Minecraft Wiki’s MCA Selector tutorial describes filtering and deleting selected Java world chunks. MCA Selector is a third-party tool; the tutorial says it is not supported by Mojang. Check that the tool is compatible with your setup before using it.

Use filters to find candidates, not to decide what is safe
The tutorial gives InhabitedTime = "0" as an example filter. It identifies generated chunks that, according to the tutorial, no player has been near. That does not prove a chunk is empty or expendable: inspect the selection for builds, stored items, paths, or anything else you want to keep. Keep an untouched backup, then delete only the chunks you have deliberately selected.
Bedrock Edition: delete a defined region in Bedrock Editor
Microsoft documents a Chunk Management feature in Bedrock Editor that deletes data for specified coordinate regions. Its regions align to chunk boundaries, and the interface lets you inspect an area before deletion. Availability depends on the device and version, so confirm you can use Bedrock Editor in your setup before planning around this workflow.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
- Back up the world.
- Define the region using its coordinates and inspect the displayed area in the editor.
- Confirm that the region contains nothing you need, then delete it.
- Open the world and check the affected area and nearby builds.
The delete operation is irreversible through the tool. Deleted chunks regenerate when a player visits the area again, so removal is not a permanent barrier to new terrain appearing there.
Xbox: free space by removing an extra world copy
If the issue is storage used by duplicate saves rather than the size of the world you want to keep, Minecraft Help’s Manage Worlds guidance for Xbox explains how to inspect each world’s file size and whether it is stored locally or in the cloud, then delete one copy while retaining the other. Removing a copy frees the space used by that copy; it does not edit the chunk data in the remaining world. Verify which copy you are deleting before confirming.

Realm downloads, replacements, and resets do not themselves shrink a save
Minecraft Help documents how to download a Bedrock Realm world and how to replace or reset a Realm world. Downloading creates a local copy; replacing or resetting changes the active Realm world. The documented actions are not described as trimming chunk data from the world you continue to use. Moving, transferring, or downloading a save can change its location or create another copy, but is not chunk removal.
