To optimize a Windows 10 PC for gaming, first measure FPS and frame times, then update drivers, reduce background resource use, select the correct GPU, configure refresh rate and VRR, match graphics settings to the CPU or GPU bottleneck, and check temperatures, storage, and RAM. Results vary by hardware and game.

This guide updates the original 2022 topic for Windows 10’s current support status and separates higher FPS from smoother frame times, shorter loading, and better responsiveness. Apply changes one at a time and keep only measured improvements.

After applying gaming optimizations, Outbyte PC Repair can scan Windows settings, clean temporary caches, and identify background issues affecting play.

Key takeaways

  • Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these steps are maintenance advice for existing installations rather than a long-term security strategy.
  • Game Mode is worth testing for resource consistency, but Microsoft does not promise a universal FPS percentage increase.
  • GPU bottlenecks respond to settings such as resolution, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, and ray tracing; CPU bottlenecks often respond to view distance, crowd density, simulation, and physics settings.
  • An SSD can improve loading times and storage responsiveness, but an SSD is not a universal FPS upgrade.
  • Benchmark every meaningful change using FPS, frame times, temperatures, utilization, and loading times, then keep only changes that improve the result without adding instability or unwanted heat.

Windows 10 gaming optimization starts with a currentness check

Microsoft Support states, “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” After that date, Windows 10 no longer receives ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Existing Windows 10 PCs can still use the optimization steps below, but consider a supported operating system when your hardware and software permit it. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance remains useful for general maintenance, but it should not be treated as a replacement for supported security updates.

How should you measure a Windows 10 gaming improvement?

Measure the problem before changing settings. A gaming tweak can affect four different outcomes: higher average FPS, steadier frame times, shorter loading times, or better general responsiveness. Those outcomes are related but not identical.

Use the same game scene, graphics settings, resolution, driver version, and test duration before and after each meaningful change. Record average FPS, low-percentile FPS when your overlay or benchmark provides it, frame-time behavior, CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, clock speeds, and loading time. Change one or two related settings at a time. Revert any change that increases crashes, input latency, heat, fan noise, or inconsistent frame times.

Symptom or goal Useful measurement Likely optimization direction
Low average FPS Average FPS and GPU utilization Lower expensive GPU settings or investigate a GPU limit
Stuttering Frame-time graph and low-percentile FPS Check background processes, CPU load, memory pressure, overlays, temperatures, and caps
Long loading times Repeatable level or fast-travel loading time Check storage health, free space, and whether the game is on a suitable SSD
Slow input or desktop response Input latency, refresh rate, and background CPU or disk use Check display settings, frame cap, overlays, power behavior, and competing applications

What Windows 10 settings should you change for gaming?

1. Install available Windows updates before troubleshooting

Install available updates on an existing Windows 10 installation before diagnosing performance. Updates can contain fixes and performance improvements, although Windows 10’s end-of-support status means this is maintenance for a legacy installation, not a long-term support plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install appropriate optional driver updates

Review optional updates for relevant drivers, prioritizing the graphics driver and appropriate chipset or platform drivers. Do not assume that the newest driver is automatically best for every game. Stability, game-specific fixes, and compatibility matter more than the word “latest.”

3. Update the graphics driver through the GPU manufacturer

Confirm whether the PC uses NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or another graphics adapter, then obtain the driver from the manufacturer’s official support channel. Avoid random driver-download sites, which can provide the wrong package or unsafe software. If a new driver causes a specific game to become unstable, compare with the manufacturer’s documented alternatives rather than repeatedly installing unrelated packages.

4. Should you turn on Game Mode?

Yes, Game Mode is a low-risk setting to test, but Game Mode is not a guaranteed FPS upgrade. Microsoft described Game Mode as helping create a “more consistent gaming experience” when system resources are contested, and current Microsoft gaming-PC guidance describes a “small but noticeable boost” for older rigs. Those are qualitative descriptions, not universal benchmark promises. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog explanation of Game Mode describes its intended resource-management benefit.

Open Windows Settings and search for Game Mode, or use the Windows gaming settings available on the installed build. Test Game Mode with the game that has the problem, then compare frame-time consistency and responsiveness rather than looking only at average FPS. If a game behaves worse, disable the setting and keep the measured result that is more stable.

5. Review Xbox Game Bar and Game DVR

Review Xbox Game Bar, background recording, and Game DVR settings. Disable recording or overlays that you do not use, especially while troubleshooting capture overhead, stutter, crashes, or input problems. Keep the advice conditional: overlay and recording impact varies with the game, capture resolution, encoder, CPU, GPU, and storage.

6. Close unnecessary applications before launching a demanding game

Close browsers with many tabs, cloud-sync clients, video calls, unused launchers, recording tools, and other applications that compete for CPU time, memory, disk bandwidth, or network capacity. Do not close security software or system components merely because they appear in the tray. First identify whether an application is actually contributing to the measured problem.

7. How do you reduce unnecessary startup applications?

Use Task Manager’s Startup tab to disable applications you recognize and do not need at sign-in. Microsoft identifies excessive startup applications as one possible cause of a slow Windows PC. Leave drivers, security tools, and hardware utilities enabled unless you know exactly what the utility does and why it is safe to remove from startup. Microsoft’s startup-app performance guidance supports selective cleanup rather than blind disabling.

8. Check background processes in Task Manager

Open Task Manager and sort processes by CPU, memory, disk, and network usage while the game is closed and during a problem session. A process that consumes resources during the game is a lead to investigate, not proof that the process should be terminated. Use the evidence to identify a bottleneck instead of running a blanket “debloat” script or disabling Windows services indiscriminately.

9. Is High performance power mode worth using?

Test the High performance power plan while the PC is plugged in, particularly on a laptop. Microsoft documents High performance as an available power option, but higher performance behavior can increase power draw, heat, and fan noise. A laptop may also reduce battery life or become thermally limited, so compare sustained clock speeds and temperatures rather than assuming the plan is always better.

10. Make sure the game uses the intended GPU

On a system with integrated and discrete graphics, select the high-performance GPU for the game where Windows or the driver exposes that choice, then verify the game is actually using the intended adapter. Available controls and labels vary by Windows version and hardware. Task Manager’s Performance view or the game’s own diagnostics can help confirm which GPU is active.

11. Which display mode should you use?

Choose fullscreen, borderless windowed, or windowed mode based on the game and your latency goal; no mode is universally fastest on every Windows 10 PC. Compare the modes using the same benchmark scene and check frame times, alt-tab behavior, overlays, and input responsiveness. Microsoft’s newer windowed-game optimization documentation is principally Windows 11-oriented, so do not silently apply Windows 11-specific instructions to Windows 10.

12. Set the monitor to its intended refresh rate

Open Windows display settings and confirm that the monitor is configured for its intended refresh rate, then check the game’s display settings as well. A high-refresh display cannot show its intended smoothness and responsiveness if Windows or the game is set to a lower refresh rate. Refresh rate changes perceived smoothness and responsiveness; refresh rate alone does not increase the FPS rendered by the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Use variable refresh rate when the hardware supports it

Enable adaptive sync or variable refresh rate only when the display, cable, GPU, driver, and game configuration support it. VRR can make fluctuating frame rates appear smoother by synchronizing display updates with rendered frames, but VRR does not create additional rendering performance. Verify the monitor’s supported adaptive-sync technology and test for flicker, range limits, or compatibility issues.

14. Use an FPS cap appropriate to the display and system

Test a frame-rate cap appropriate to the monitor and the game. A sensible cap can reduce unnecessary GPU load, heat, power use, and frame-time swings, particularly when the PC can render far more frames than the display needs. Compare capped and uncapped behavior with an FPS overlay or repeatable benchmark. Keep the setting that provides the better combination of latency, smoothness, temperature, and stability.

How can you get more FPS on a Windows 10 PC?

15. Lower the game’s most expensive GPU settings first

When the GPU is the bottleneck, test resolution, shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, and ray tracing first. Lower one or two settings at a time and measure the resulting FPS and image quality. A visually expensive setting can have a large cost in one game and a small cost in another, so a universal “best” preset is not reliable.

16. Reduce CPU-heavy settings when the processor is the bottleneck

When the CPU is limiting frame times, test view distance, crowd density, simulation detail, and some physics settings. The exact option names differ by game, and a high GPU utilization reading can be misleading if the processor is limiting the game thread or producing uneven frame times. Use frame-time monitoring and per-core CPU information when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

17. Use resolution scaling or performance-oriented upscaling carefully

Use the game’s resolution scaling or performance-oriented upscaling mode when the game provides one and the GPU is the bottleneck. Lower internal resolution can improve rendering performance, but the trade-off is image quality, motion clarity, and possible upscaling artifacts. Inspect moving objects, foliage, text, and fine geometry instead of judging the setting from a static menu screen.

18. Disable overlays you do not need

Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, GPU software, Xbox, and third-party overlays when diagnosing stutter, crashes, or input problems. Overlays can provide useful metrics and recording controls, but every extra layer is another variable. Re-enable only the overlays that deliver a benefit you actually use and that remain stable in your games.

19. Keep adequate free space on the system and game drive

Maintain practical free space on the Windows and game drives. Microsoft lists limited storage as one possible contributor to poor PC performance. Free space supports system maintenance, updates, shader caches, temporary files, and game installations, but free space alone should not be advertised as a guaranteed FPS increase. Microsoft’s storage and performance guidance supports treating storage maintenance as general system health work.

20. Does an SSD improve gaming performance?

An SSD can improve loading times and storage responsiveness when the existing drive is a bottleneck, but an SSD is not a universal graphics-performance upgrade. An SSD may reduce waiting during game launches, level loads, and asset streaming; average FPS may remain almost unchanged when the CPU or GPU is the limiting component.

Before buying an M.2 drive, check the motherboard’s available M.2 slot, supported drive length, PCIe generation, heatsink clearance, operating-system support, and required capacity. Also check whether the case, motherboard, and installation layout provide adequate cooling. Microsoft’s gaming-PC setup guidance identifies storage interfaces such as M.2 as compatibility factors to verify before upgrading.

Storage change Most defensible benefit What it does not guarantee
Move a game from a slow drive to a suitable SSD Shorter loading and faster storage access A fixed FPS increase
Replace a nearly full system drive More room for updates, caches, and installations Automatic stutter elimination
Install an M.2 SSD without checking compatibility No guaranteed benefit until the slot and interface are confirmed Compatibility with every motherboard or case

How do you make games run better on an old PC?

21. Monitor temperatures during gaming

Use a trusted monitoring tool to watch CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, and utilization while gaming. If clock speeds fall as temperatures rise, cooling or airflow may be limiting sustained performance. Do not apply one fixed “safe temperature” claim to every processor or graphics card; component specifications and firmware behavior differ.

22. Improve case airflow and clean dust carefully

Dust buildup and restricted airflow can increase temperatures and noise, which can contribute to throttling. Power down the PC, disconnect it, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance, and use compressed air safely. Avoid unsafe practices such as forcing fans to spin excessively or cleaning an energized system. Recheck temperatures and clock speeds after cleaning.

23. Verify memory capacity and configuration

Insufficient RAM can cause paging and stutter in some games and workloads. Check installed memory, actual usage during a problem session, and whether the system supports dual-channel operation. Any upgrade must match the motherboard’s supported memory type, capacity, speed, and module configuration. More RAM is not a guaranteed fixed FPS gain when the game is already within available memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

24. Check hardware compatibility before upgrading

Check compatibility before buying a gaming upgrade. Confirm the CPU socket, RAM type and speed, storage interface, case clearance, power-supply capacity, cooling solution, graphics-card dimensions, and monitor requirements. Microsoft’s gaming-PC guidance highlights CPU, RAM, storage, and gaming-peripheral compatibility as parts of a complete setup. Microsoft’s hardware compatibility guidance is a useful checklist, but the motherboard and component manufacturers remain the final authority for exact support.

25. Benchmark before and after every meaningful change

Repeat the benchmark after each meaningful change and keep a simple record of the setting, driver, game version, average FPS, low-percentile FPS, frame-time behavior, temperature, utilization, and loading time. A change that raises average FPS but produces worse frame-time spikes may be a poor result. Revert changes that increase instability, input latency, heat, or noise.

Which optimization should you try first?

Priority Change Expected effect Cost and reversibility Main trade-off
1 Measure, update, and check drivers Stability, fixes, and sometimes responsiveness Usually free and reversible A new driver can be game-dependent
2 Close applications, review startup, and inspect Task Manager More consistent frame times and responsiveness Free and reversible Do not disable software blindly
3 Test Game Mode, overlays, power plan, and GPU selection Consistency or reduced resource contention Free and generally reversible Power use, heat, noise, or game-specific behavior
4 Correct refresh rate, VRR, FPS cap, and display mode Smoother presentation and responsiveness Free and reversible Latency and smoothness depend on the display and game
5 Match graphics settings to the bottleneck Higher FPS or steadier frame times Free and reversible Image-quality loss
6 Improve cooling, RAM, or storage Sustained performance, less paging, or shorter loading Hardware cost and compatibility checks required Heat, installation risk, cost, or no FPS gain in another bottleneck

For most PCs, begin with measurement, updates, driver verification, background-process checks, and display configuration. Then identify whether the GPU, CPU, memory, storage, or temperature is limiting the game. Older hardware may not gain much from software tweaks; Microsoft notes that hardware limitations can require an upgrade. Do not use registry hacks, “disable all services” guides, or aggressive debloat scripts as universal gaming advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I turn on Game Mode in Windows 10?

Game Mode is worth testing, but Game Mode does not guarantee a fixed FPS increase. Microsoft describes Game Mode as helping provide more consistent resource allocation when the PC is under contention. Test it with the affected game and keep it enabled only if frame times or responsiveness improve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an SSD improve gaming performance?

An SSD can shorten game loading times and improve storage responsiveness, but an SSD does not universally increase FPS. FPS remains primarily limited by the CPU, GPU, memory pressure, or thermals in many games.

How can I get more FPS on my Windows 10 PC?

Start by measuring FPS and frame times, then check drivers, background processes, GPU selection, refresh rate, temperatures, and the game’s graphics bottleneck. Lower GPU-heavy settings for a GPU limit and CPU-heavy settings for a CPU limit.

Is Windows 10 still supported for gaming?

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Existing Windows 10 gaming steps may still work, but Windows 10 no longer receives ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date.

The Bottom Line

The best way to optimize a Windows 10 PC for gaming is to measure first, remove resource contention, match settings to the actual bottleneck, and verify every result. Game Mode, an FPS cap, a suitable SSD, more RAM, or a power-plan change can help in the right situation, but none is a universal FPS guarantee. Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, plan for a supported operating system where the PC allows it.
