How Do I Remove Mods from a Modpack?

Remove a mod through your launcher’s profile controls: CurseForge uses content management, while Modrinth requires unlinking the instance before customization.

How you remove a mod depends on your launcher. In CurseForge, enable content management for the profile, then switch off the mod in its installed-content list. In the Modrinth App, unlink the instance from its published pack before customizing it. Back up important worlds first: removing a mod can affect a world that depends on it.

Choose the right method for your launcher

Launcher How to customize Effect on pack updates
CurseForge Enable Allow content management for this profile, then toggle off the mod in the installed-mod list. While content management is enabled, the pack cannot be updated or changed to another version. If you turn it off, a later update may overwrite custom changes unless you update into a new profile. Modrinth App Open the instance options, select Installation, then choose Unlink instance. Unlinking allows custom content but disconnects the instance from the published pack, so it can no longer automatically update or move between that pack’s versions. Modrinth Help Center

Remove a mod in CurseForge

  1. Open the intended modpack in the CurseForge app and open its Profile Options.
  2. Enable Allow content management for this profile and save the setting.
  3. Open the pack’s installed content or mod list and toggle off the mod you want to disable. CurseForge documents managing installed mods from that list. CurseForge’s customizing guide
  4. Launch the profile and check whether the problem is resolved.

This is a profile-level change, not a universal way to permanently erase every file related to a mod. CurseForge warns that enabling content management prevents updating the pack or changing it to another version. If you later disable content management, a pack update can overwrite custom changes; updating into a new profile is the option CurseForge describes for preserving the customized profile. Customize a Modrinth instance

  1. Open the intended instance’s options in the Modrinth App.
  2. Go to Installation and choose Unlink instance.
  3. Customize the instance after it has been unlinked.

Unlinking is not simply a reversible per-mod switch: it removes the instance’s connection to the published modpack. As a result, it can no longer automatically update or move between versions of that pack. Modrinth Help Center

Using another launcher?

The steps above are documented for CurseForge and Modrinth; they should not be assumed to apply to every launcher. Use that launcher’s current documentation to locate the correct instance-specific content controls or folder. Don’t apply a folder path from another launcher to a different instance.

A Minecraft modpack can include configuration and other files as well as mods, and Modrinth describes pack contents beyond mod files. Removing a mod does not guarantee that related configuration or changes inside an existing world are automatically cleaned up. Modrinth Help Center

Also preserve the pack’s game version and modloader compatibility while troubleshooting. CurseForge notes that Forge and Fabric support compatible mods and packs; changing the loader is not a general fix for a removal problem. CurseForge’s Minecraft getting-started guide

Protect your world and troubleshoot problems

  • Check the profile first. Confirm you are editing the intended instance; launchers can keep separate profiles.
  • Back up important worlds before removing content. Some mods create dependencies that can prevent a world from opening properly after removal. That is a risk, not an outcome that happens with every mod. CurseForge’s world and mod guidance
  • If the pack stops launching or a world will not load, restore the removed mod or restore your backup, then consult the pack author’s instructions and your launcher’s current repair guidance. There is no single recovery procedure established for all packs and launchers.
  • Keep the original pack relationship in mind. CurseForge content management affects update behavior; Modrinth unlinking removes the published-pack connection. Choose the workflow with the future of that instance in mind.
