Tame the cat, make sure it is standing, then travel more than 12 blocks away. A tamed cat can teleport to its owner, but the distance is a trigger—not a guarantee of an instant teleport. Mojang’s current Bedrock cat definition also filters this behavior on the cat being panicked.
How to make your cat teleport to you
- Tame the cat. It must belong to you for owner-following behavior to apply.
- Make it stand. If it is sitting, interact with it to tell it to stand; the exact control depends on your platform. Mojang’s Bedrock sample defines both a stay-while-sitting behavior and a follow-owner behavior. Mojang’s Bedrock cat entity sample
- Walk more than 12 blocks away. The Minecraft Wiki mechanics reference describes this as the usual owner-distance threshold for a tamed cat to teleport. Minecraft Wiki cat mechanics reference
Why your cat may not teleport
Distance alone may not make a teleport happen immediately. In Mojang’s live Bedrock sample, the cat’s teleport-to-owner behavior is filtered by both owner distance greater than 12 blocks and the cat being panicked. This is evidence about the current Bedrock implementation, not proof that Java Edition uses the same panic condition.
The mechanics reference lists several situations that can prevent or disrupt teleporting. Check whether your cat is:
- Still sitting because you ordered it to stay.
- In an unloaded chunk, or in a different dimension.
- In a boat or minecart, or attached to a lead.
- In water, or without a suitable place to land nearby.
The detailed blocker list comes from a secondary mechanics reference; the available sources do not establish that every exception works identically in Java and Bedrock.

Can you teleport the cat with a command?
If commands are enabled and you have permission, you can use the edition-appropriate entity-targeting teleport command as a workaround. Microsoft documents Bedrock’s /teleport command and its /tp alias, but the exact syntax depends on the command form and edition. Microsoft Learn: Bedrock teleport command
Does the rule differ between Java and Bedrock?
The commonly documented distance threshold is more than 12 blocks. Mojang’s current Bedrock sample adds a panic filter to the teleport behavior; it should not be assumed to describe Java Edition. The available references do not provide a complete version-by-version comparison, so treat the threshold as a general rule and the Bedrock condition as edition-specific implementation evidence.
