You generally can’t attach a lead directly to a villager. Put the villager in a boat, attach the lead to the boat, then guide the boat to your destination. The exact leash behavior depends on your Minecraft edition and version.
How to move a villager with a lead
- Bring a boat close to the villager and maneuver the villager into it.
- Hold a lead and interact with the boat to attach the leash.
- Walk to guide the boat, keeping it within leash range.
The boat—not the villager—is the entity attached to the lead. Mojang’s Java Snapshot 25w16a notes describe boats as leashable and specifically highlight moving villagers with the revised mechanic: Minecraft Java Snapshot 25w16a.
How far can the boat get from you?
Keep the boat close: the cited Java snapshot notes specify a 12-block leash snapping distance, measured between the centers of the entities’ bounding boxes. Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 release notes specify a 12-block break distance generally, with 16 blocks for a Happy Ghast. These are versioned mechanics, so check the rules for the edition and version you play rather than assuming every release behaves identically.
Does this work in Java and Bedrock?
Mojang announced the revised leash features on April 15, 2025, saying they were available for testing in Java snapshots and would come to Bedrock previews and betas. The Java Snapshot 25w16a notes document leashing boats; Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 release notes document expanded leashing mechanics, including leashing entities to other entities. The official sources cited here do not establish the exact Java stable release in which boat leashing became generally available.
