In Minecraft Java Edition, try /place structure minecraft:ancient_city to generate an Ancient City at the command position. Command support and the structure ID can vary by version, so check autocomplete in your game. In Bedrock Edition, use /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city to search for a naturally generated city; the documented Bedrock commands do not establish a built-in Ancient City placement command.
What command spawns an Ancient City?
Java Edition: try the structure placement command
- Make sure commands are permitted in your world. In a Java single-player world, commands can be enabled when creating the world with Allow Commands.
- Open chat and enter
/place structure minecraft:ancient_city. - If Minecraft rejects the command or identifier, use in-game autocomplete to check what your current version accepts.
The Java command form documented in the official snapshot notes is /place structure <structure> [pos], which places a structure. The cited documentation is for snapshot 22w18a, not a guarantee that the exact Ancient City identifier works in every release. See the Java snapshot 22w18a notes.
Bedrock Edition: direct placement is not established
Do not assume the Java command works in Bedrock. Microsoft’s Bedrock /place reference describes placing listed jigsaw structures, features, or feature rules; its documented structure values do not include minecraft:ancient_city. The available documentation therefore supports locating a natural city or loading a saved structure, not directly generating the built-in Ancient City with Bedrock /place. See the Bedrock /place reference.
How do you find an Ancient City with /locate?
/locate searches for a nearby generated structure; it does not create one. In an edition and version that accepts the Ancient City identifier, enter:

/locate structure minecraft:ancient_city
Travel to the coordinates Minecraft returns. The command searches for the nearest structure in the current dimension and reports an error if none is found there. If the command is rejected, check autocomplete for the syntax supported by your version. Minecraft’s official command guide explains /locate and its nearest-structure behavior; the official Bedrock reference also documents the command. See Minecraft commands and the Bedrock /locate reference.
Can Bedrock load an Ancient City from a saved structure?
Bedrock’s /structure load command loads a named structure saved or otherwise obtained by the player, placing it at specified destination coordinates; optional rotation and mirroring are available. It does not, by itself, generate the built-in Ancient City from Minecraft’s world-generation data. Consult the Bedrock /structure reference for its syntax and options.

What should you check if the command fails?
- Edition: Use the Java placement instruction only in Java. Bedrock’s documented commands have different capabilities.
- Version and spelling: Check whether the command and structure ID autocomplete in your current version.
- Permission: Java single-player worlds need commands enabled. In Bedrock single-player, turn on Allow Cheats in the game settings; Microsoft Learn marks the documented Bedrock
/placeand/structurecommands as requiring cheats. - Goal: Choose
/placeto attempt generation in Java,/locateto find an existing city, or Bedrock/structure loadto load a saved build.
Where do Ancient Cities generate naturally?
Minecraft Help places natural Ancient Cities in the Deep Dark and says they generate at Y level -51. That is natural-generation context, not a guaranteed coordinate for a command-placed structure. See Minecraft Help: Ancient City.
