In vanilla Minecraft, allays are understood to be naturally persistent, so you generally do not need a name tag, lead, or item in hand to stop ordinary despawning. If an allay goes missing, investigate whether it died, changed dimensions, was in an unloaded area, or was affected by the version, server software, or add-ons you use.
Do allays naturally despawn?
The current allay mechanics reference describes them as not naturally despawning. The official sources available do not directly document that persistence rule, so treat it as the general vanilla behavior rather than a guarantee for every edition, version, server, or add-on.
There is no universally documented item-based fix for allay despawning. A name tag, lead, or item held by the allay should not be treated as a proven safeguard against ordinary disappearance.
What to check if an allay is missing
Work through the circumstances rather than assuming the allay despawned:

- Edition and version: Confirm whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and which version is running. Mechanics and bugs can differ.
- Possible death: Look for nearby hazards or other signs that the allay may have been killed.
- Dimension travel: Check whether it could have followed or been moved into another dimension.
- Unloaded area: Return to the place it was last seen and load the surrounding area; an allay that is not currently visible may not have been removed.
- Server or add-ons: On multiplayer servers, check with the administrator about server software, plugins, or add-ons that could alter mob behavior.
These are troubleshooting possibilities, not confirmed explanations for any specific disappearance. The available information does not identify the cause without details about your world and setup.
Can you use a name tag, lead, or held item?
Do not rely on any of these as a guaranteed despawn fix. Allay interactions with name tags and leads differ by edition, and the available official documentation does not say that either is required to preserve an allay. Giving an allay an item relates to its item-handling behavior; it is not established as a persistence safeguard.

How to make a replacement allay
If you cannot recover the missing allay, you can duplicate another one using a jukebox and an amethyst shard. Mojang’s official instructions say to play music on a jukebox, bring an allay close enough to dance, then give it an amethyst shard. The shard is consumed and the allay splits into two.
Bedrock 1.19.10 notes specify a five-minute duplication cooldown for the two allays after duplication. That cooldown governs duplication, not despawning. Java 1.21.5 release notes likewise discuss the duplication implementation: the redundant CanDuplicate field was removed because duplication is controlled by DuplicationCooldown. Neither note establishes a despawn timer.
