There is no in-game profanity toggle documented in the official Rockstar materials reviewed. A community-made filter is available for Windows PC Story Mode, but it requires third-party mod loaders and does not cover every spoken line. No console filtering option was identified in the reviewed sources.
Is there a profanity setting in Red Dead Redemption 2?
The official Rockstar store and support materials reviewed do not document a setting that removes profanity from story dialogue. That is not the same as a definitive Rockstar statement that no such setting exists; it means a built-in switch is not documented in those materials. The Xbox store listing identifies the game and its content descriptors, but does not document a profanity filter. Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 page and the Xbox listing do not provide instructions for one.

What can you do on Windows PC?
A community mod called Red Dead Redemption 2 Profanity Filter offers an English-language filter for Story Mode. It uses a self-applier to process the game files and add filtered files through Lenny’s Mod Loader; the listing says the game’s archives and executable are not modified. This is third-party software, not a Rockstar-supported game setting.
Requirements and compatibility
The mod listing requires the game, Lenny’s Mod Loader RDR, ScriptHookRDR2 V2, and an ASI loader. Its author reports testing on Steam build 13773296, RDR2.exe 1.0.1491.50, and Windows 11 in Story Mode. Those are specific test conditions, not a guarantee for every game version or installation. Check the current mod listing against your exact build before installing.

The listing reports that its processed audio folder occupies about 14.2 GB, with additional working space needed during installation. That figure comes from the mod author and may change with later releases.
What the filter covers
According to the listing, it filters English subtitles and other on-screen text, along with many standard mission and ambient voice clips. The mod author reports processing 12,865 English text lines and censoring 13,681 words. For audio, the author reports editing 38,811 voice clips and silencing 40,184 stretches across 2,347 audio files. These are the listing author’s figures, not independent measurements.
- Language: English only; the listing does not claim coverage for other languages.
- Cutscenes: Cutscene subtitles are filtered, but cinematic cutscene voices are not silenced in this version.
- Other audio gaps: The listing identifies 67 clips in a different audio format, 455 clips with unidentified filenames, and missed speech-recognition matches as uncovered.
- Online: Red Dead Online is not supported. The listing warns against entering Online with the filter or mod loaders installed.
The author also says 75 respectful religious references remain in the text. Because this is a community-made filter, its coverage and compatibility depend on the listing’s version and the game build.

What about consoles and Red Dead Online?
No console profanity-filtering option was identified in the reviewed sources. The documented workaround is for Windows PC Story Mode, not Xbox or PlayStation, and it is not supported for Red Dead Online. The available evidence therefore does not establish a supported way to selectively remove RDR2 profanity on console or in Online.

No. The Xbox listing rates Red Dead Redemption 2 Mature 17+ and includes Strong Language among its descriptors, alongside nudity, sexual content, drugs and alcohol, blood and gore, and intense violence. A filter that changes some English text and voice clips does not change the game’s rating or remove those other forms of mature content.

A headset can reduce what one person hears, but it does not censor subtitles or dialogue in the game. Parental restrictions may limit access to a game, but the reviewed platform information does not show that they selectively remove RDR2 profanity.
