A professional golfer’s withdrawal process depends on the tour, event and timing. Here is how the 2026 PGA TOUR rules handle notice, valid reasons and evidence.

A professional golfer does not use one universal withdrawal procedure: the rules depend on the tour and event, and on whether the player withdraws before the entry deadline, before play, during a round, or after completing a round. For a current, detailed example, the 2026 PGA TOUR handbook requires notice to the appropriate Tour official; in some situations it also restricts the reasons for withdrawing and requires written evidence.

How a PGA TOUR withdrawal works

The PGA TOUR’s 2026 Player Handbook and Regulations sets different requirements according to timing. Its rules apply to PGA TOUR cosponsored, coordinated, or approved tournaments; they should not be assumed to govern other tours or every professional event. The handbook’s withdrawal provisions are in Article IV, Section A-8: PGA TOUR 2026 Player Handbook and Regulations.

Before the commitment deadline

A player may withdraw for any reason before the commitment deadline. The player must notify the Tour of the withdrawal.

After the deadline but before the tournament starts

After the commitment deadline, the handbook permits a pre-tournament withdrawal only for an injury or disability requiring medical attention, or a serious personal emergency. The player must notify the Tour immediately and send written supporting evidence to the Commissioner within 14 days. For a medical withdrawal, that evidence must include documentation from a medical professional describing the ailment and prescribed treatment. The handbook is explicit: “Fatigue will not be considered a valid reason for withdrawing.”

During a round

A player who needs to stop during a round must tell the Chief Referee or a PGA TOUR Rules Official. The stated grounds are an injury or disability requiring medical attention, or a serious personal emergency. Written evidence supporting the withdrawal must be sent to the Commissioner within 14 days.

After completing a round

After finishing 18 holes, a player must notify the Chief Referee or a Rules Official and return the signed scorecard. The completed round stands; the withdrawal applies to the next round. If that next round follows the field reduction, the player remains eligible to make the cut but will not appear in later-round groupings.

What happens if the player leaves without following the process?

The PGA TOUR handbook says a breach of Section A-8 can result in a fine, suspension from play, or both in PGA TOUR cosponsored and coordinated tournaments. It does not set one automatic fine amount for every breach of that section. The potential sanction is stated in the 2026 handbook.

Why the rules can differ by event

Other professional golf policies show why a player, caddie, or fan should check the specific event’s regulations rather than assume the PGA TOUR process applies everywhere.

Policy What it says Scope
PGA of America 2026 Professional Championship WD is used when a player deliberately stops with a verifiable reason or opts not to start; notice goes to the committee or a Championship official. NC is used for leaving or failing to return a scorecard without a verifiable reason. One championship’s policy, not a universal tour rule. 2026 Professional Championship Policies.

DP World Tour 2022 Members General Regulations The document lists historical £250, £500, and £1,000 fine tiers associated with specified deadlines. Historical 2022 rules, not a current 2026 schedule. 2022 regulations.

What to check before withdrawing

For any professional event, the player should consult the current regulations for that tour and tournament. The operational details that matter are the notice deadline, permitted grounds, official or committee who must be told, evidence requirements and deadlines, and any effect on fees, fines, eligibility, or later-round groupings. A qualifying series or single championship may have its own policy, and past-season rules should not be treated as current without confirmation.
