Gem Tech armor is a post-Moon Lord set in Terraria’s Calamity Mod. Wearing its headgear, body armor and Schynbaulds together activates six orbiting gems that provide class-specific combat bonuses plus defense and mobility. A hit above 100 damage in one instance can knock a gem loose, temporarily removing its benefits while launching it toward an enemy.
What activates Gem Tech armor’s effects?
The set has three pieces: Gem Tech Headgear, Gem Tech Body Armor and Gem Tech Schynbaulds. The full set has 69 defense, but most of its distinctive effects come from the set bonus, so equip all three pieces to activate the orbiting gems. The Official Calamity Mod Wiki lists the set as post-Moon Lord armor: Gem Tech armor.

With the complete set equipped, five gems correspond to Calamity’s combat classes—melee, ranged, magic, summoning and rogue—and a sixth pink gem provides defensive bonuses. Each gem supplies its own listed benefits.
What does each Gem Tech do?
| Gem | Class or role | Listed effects |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Melee | +45% melee damage, +26% melee speed and +12% melee critical strike chance. Melee hits release seven shards. The shard effect has a 5.5-second cooldown, which passes twice as quickly while holding a true melee weapon. |
| Green | Ranged | +50% ranged damage, +16% ranged critical strike chance and 30% ammo cost reduction. Ranged damage also spawns homing flechettes based on the original projectile’s damage; the wiki lists a soft cap and a maximum number of simultaneous flechettes. |
| Violet | Magic | +50% magic damage, +16% magic critical strike chance and +100 maximum mana. Holding a non-magic weapon grants +8 mana regeneration. |
| Blue | Summoning | +72% summon damage and +4 maximum minion slots. It also removes the summon damage penalty while using non-summoner weapons. |
| Red | Rogue | +50% rogue damage, +16% rogue critical strike chance and +130 maximum rogue stealth. Non-rogue weapons do not consume stealth. |
| Pink | Defense | +75 defense, +12% damage reduction, +1 HP/s regeneration, +40% movement speed and +8% jump speed. |
These are the effects listed by the Official Calamity Mod Wiki; they are in-game item statistics, not real-world measurements. See the wiki’s Gem Tech armor entry for its additional projectile details.

How does switching weapon classes affect regeneration?
While all six gems are present, hitting an enemy with any weapon grants +1 HP/s regeneration for eight seconds. Switching to a weapon from another class during that buff adds +0.5 HP/s for 2.5 seconds. This makes class-switching part of the set’s mechanics, rather than limiting the armor to a single weapon class.
What happens when a gem breaks off?
A single hit exceeding 100 damage causes one gem to break off and home toward a nearby enemy. The wiki lists the launched gem at 40,000 base damage. The lost gem depends on the class of the most recently used weapon; if that class gem is already missing, or its class condition is not met, the pink base gem is lost instead. A missing gem stops granting its bonuses and returns after 30 seconds. The effect details are listed on the Official Calamity Mod Wiki.

In practice, a qualifying hit trades temporary access to one gem’s benefits for an offensive projectile. If preserving a particular bonus matters during a fight, avoiding single hits above the threshold and paying attention to weapon-class switching can reduce disruption. That is a practical implication of the listed mechanics, not a separate tested strategy.

The history page cautions that it may not include every change relevant to the current version, so confirm the recipe in the in-game recipe browser if your version differs. What is Gem Tech armor best suited for?
Its design spreads bonuses across five combat classes and a defensive gem, which makes it useful to consider when you want class flexibility as well as substantial defensive and mobility effects. When comparing it with another endgame set, weigh its multi-class bonuses against that set’s specialization, and account for the temporary loss of a gem after a hit above the threshold. Those are comparisons implied by the listed effects, not results from a head-to-head test.
