LEGO PlayStation 72306 is a near-1:1 display model of Sony’s original 1994 PlayStation, not a working game system. Its gray shell, ridges, ports, controller socket and disc-lid action recreate the look and handling of the CD-era console, while brick-built Power and Open buttons add tactile mechanisms. The model cannot read discs, connect to a television, produce audio or video, run games, or reproduce the original startup screen. The comparison is therefore between collectible fidelity and gaming functionality: LEGO offers a detailed nostalgia object and building experience; the actual PlayStation remains the device that plays original software.
What exactly is LEGO PlayStation 72306?
Set 72306 is an 18+ adult construction set containing 1,911 pieces. The LEGO Group describes it as a near-1:1 scale replica of the original PlayStation. The finished model is over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep (approximately 60 × 260 × 190 mm), and the official PlayStation store lists an approximate 2.3 kg weight.

The set contains the console, one plug-in controller and two removable display scenes: Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. Those scenes are brick-built dioramas hidden inside the console; they are not game discs or playable versions of either title.
LEGO and PlayStation announced availability through PlayStation Direct and LEGO Insiders from 1 October 2026, followed by general LEGO availability from 4 October 2026. The listed price is $179.99 in the United States, €159.99 in the euro area and £139.99 in the United Kingdom. Regional taxes, delivery charges and later retailer pricing can change the amount you pay.

Is the LEGO PlayStation the same size as the real PS1?
It is intended to match the original console’s footprint and visible proportions, and the published dimensions support a near-size recreation. A side-by-side comparison reports close matches for the gray outer shell, side ridges, rear-port layout, front controller sockets and underside feet.

What details does the LEGO model get right?
The strongest fidelity is visual and tactile. The shell’s gray color, side grooves, rear connections, front controller ports and bottom feet echo the original machine. The controller can be placed in either front slot, recreating the familiar two-port arrangement even though the model has no electronic connection.
Pressing the brick-built Power button raises a small green element that suggests the original indicator light. Pressing Open lifts the disc-lid mechanism and exposes the hidden Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes. These moving parts recreate the ritual of operating the machine without simulating its electronics.

Because only one controller is included, the package represents a console display setup rather than a complete historical collection of the original hardware, accessories and games. The dioramas add personality and visual interest but should be understood as LEGO interpretations of game worlds, not software emulation.
Can LEGO PlayStation 72306 actually play games?
No. It cannot run games or perform any console function. There is no processor, memory, optical drive, controller circuitry, video output or power system for gameplay. The words “working” and “functional” apply only to the model’s physical buttons, plug-in controller and opening mechanism.
The original PlayStation, released in 1994, is an electronic CD-based system. Reference specifications identify an R3000 processor running at 33.87 MHz and 2 MB of RAM, alongside audio/video output, controller input and memory-card support. Those components let real hardware load software from discs, generate sound and pictures, accept player input and save progress. None exists inside the LEGO set.

Consequently, the LEGO console cannot connect to a television, read an original disc, show the PlayStation startup animation or turn the included controller into a gamepad. Anyone seeking playable original software needs functioning PlayStation hardware or a modern platform that legally supports compatible games.
Is this a PS1 model or a PS5 model?
It is a model of the first PlayStation, often called the PS1, not the current PS5. The set’s 1994 styling, CD-era proportions and Gran Turismo and Ape Escape references all point to Sony’s original machine.
The PS5 is a separate, modern console. Sony’s official specification lists approximately 390 × 104 × 260 mm dimensions, a 4.5 kg weight, a Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 graphics, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory and an 825 GB SSD. Selected PS5 editions also include an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. Those specifications are not relevant to the LEGO set’s capabilities; they simply clarify that “PlayStation” in the product name refers to the brand’s first-generation hardware.

What does $179.99 buy you?
The price positions 72306 as a premium licensed adult display set, not as an alternative way to acquire a working console. Its value comes from the near-size silhouette, licensed design, 1,911-piece build, moving controls and concealed scenes. A collector who wants shelf presentation and a hands-on construction project is paying for physical fidelity and display appeal.
A player who wants to use discs, memory cards, television output or original controllers should not treat the LEGO set as a substitute. The practical decision is simple: choose the LEGO model for memorabilia and building, or choose functioning hardware for games.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which version should a collector identify?
Use “LEGO PlayStation 72306” as the product name. The LEGO announcement and the product identity used across the official announcement identify the set as 72306. One official PlayStation Direct page contains a conflicting model-number field showing 72036; that appears to be store metadata rather than the set identity used in the announcement. The discrepancy matters only when matching a purchase listing or catalog record, so verify the box and listing details if exact numbering is important.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age rating does LEGO PlayStation 72306 have?
The set is designated for ages 18 and over. That rating identifies it as an adult-oriented construction and display product, not a statement about the original console’s game ratings.
Does the set include a real PlayStation controller?
It includes one LEGO-built controller designed to plug into the model’s front socket. It is not an electronic controller and cannot operate an original console or any modern system.
Recommended Free Tools
Are Gran Turismo and Ape Escape included as playable games?
No. They appear as removable brick-built dioramas hidden inside the console. The package contains no discs, cartridges, downloadable software or emulation.
How should I display the model if I want the hidden scenes visible?
Keep the console positioned so the Open mechanism can be lifted without pressing against a wall or shelf above it. Because the scenes are removable, set them beside the console when you want the game references to be easier to see.
