Its Enhanced version adds an overhauled interface, adjustable difficulty, autosave, battle fast-forward, clearer tactical information, and voiced, expanded story scenes. That is a persuasive case for calling usability the original’s biggest problem—but it is an editorial judgment, not a proven consensus about what players disliked most.
What problem does the remake actually fix?
The original’s tactical design is not what the remake sets out to replace. Square Enix’s director Kazutoyo Maehiro instead emphasized how controls and interface shape whether players can appreciate a game’s design: “Even if the game design is excellent, people won’t appreciate it if the controls aren’t great.” The Enhanced version’s changes target the practical effort of navigating, understanding, and moving through battles, alongside the presentation of the story.

Square Enix has not established that usability was universally considered the original’s single biggest flaw. The more supportable claim is narrower: The Ivalice Chronicles directly tackles several sources of modern play friction while retaining the tactical-RPG foundation. Maehiro said the original’s master data and source code were unavailable; after considering an emulator for Classic, the team chose to rebuild the game to make more granular refinements. Maehiro’s interview on PlayStation.Blog explains that decision.
How Enhanced makes battles easier to manage
Choose a difficulty that suits your entry point
Enhanced adds adjustable difficulty. PlayStation’s overview describes the more accessible Squire setting as a possible starting point for newcomers. That gives players an official option intended to lower the barrier to entry without requiring them to begin with the Classic presentation. The sources do not specify a complete difficulty scale or quantify how much each setting changes challenge.

These are quality-of-life changes: the official descriptions do not say they replace the turn-based tactical rules, positioning, or decision-making.
Navigate through an updated interface
The Enhanced version overhauls the interface and improves graphics. Maehiro described a complete graphical overhaul of the interface as part of making the game work well for contemporary play. The goal is not merely to make the old game look different; it is to make its controls and information easier to use.

What changes—and what stays—in the story
Enhanced revises and enriches the script, adds character conversations, and gives the dialogue full voice acting. Maehiro said story and dialogue material cut from the original for time was added or refined for this release. These changes expand how the narrative is delivered; they are distinct from the battle usability improvements.

The tactical RPG at the center remains recognizable: turn-based combat, battlefield positioning, terrain, and character progression still define play. Square Enix lists more than 20 jobs and over 300 abilities. PlayStation’s overview explains that learned abilities remain usable after a character changes jobs, the flexibility that lets players build characters beyond a single role. Square Enix’s announcement and PlayStation’s game overview describe these systems.

Enhanced or Classic: which version should you play?
Both versions are included in The Ivalice Chronicles. The choice is between a refreshed, more approachable presentation and a closer recreation of the 1997 experience—not between buying two separate editions.
| Version | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | Overhauled interface and improved graphics; revised and enriched script, added character conversations, and full voice acting; adjustable difficulty, autosave, fast-forward, turn-order display, and tactical battlefield view. | Players who want modern usability tools, updated presentation, expanded story delivery, or a more accessible entry point. |
| Classic | A recreation of the 1997 game using the War of the Lions translation. PlayStation says it stays true to the original in almost every respect, with autosave added. | Players who prioritize a closer return to the original’s presentation and gameplay. |
