Fortnite no longer uses the old color-and-quality rarity tiers to label cosmetics. Epic retired that system in update v29.20, announced on April 9, 2024. Cosmetic Series labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series remain, while styles are item-specific variations that may be customizable or require unlocking. To inspect styles included with an item, open it in the Locker and select Edit.
What happened to Fortnite skin rarity?
Fortnite retired its old Battle Royale-inspired cosmetic rarity system in v29.20. Epic announced the change on April 9, 2024, explaining that the colors and tags previously used to express cosmetic quality would no longer serve that purpose. As a result, players should not treat the former color tiers and quality names as a current, universal classification for skins or other cosmetics.

This change affects how cosmetics are labeled; it does not mean that outfits, back blings, gliders, or pickaxes stopped having different appearances or ways to customize them. It means the old rarity labels no longer provide the official quality categories they once did. A color or name remembered from the previous system should not be used to infer an item’s current value, power, exclusivity, or likelihood of returning: the retired labels were categories for cosmetic quality, not a guarantee about those other properties.

Named Series still appear in Fortnite. Epic cited Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series as examples of labels that remain to help players find cosmetics. A Series label groups or identifies an item by a named collection or identity; it is not a replacement color tier or a statement of cosmetic quality.

That distinction matters when looking at an item listing or Locker entry. A Series name can still be relevant as a way to identify the kind of collection an item belongs to. The older color-and-tag system, by contrast, was retired as the way to express quality. The two kinds of label answer different questions, so seeing a Series name does not mean the removed rarity scale has returned under another name.
What is a Fortnite style?
Epic Support defines styles as “customizable or unlockable variations for cosmetic items such as skins, back blings, gliders and pickaxes.” In other words, a style is an alternate appearance associated with an individual cosmetic item. Depending on the item, a variation may be available to select or may need to be unlocked.
Styles are item-specific. There is no single rule that says every outfit has the same number of variations, that every variation is available immediately, or that every style is earned in the same way. The practical answer for a particular skin or other cosmetic is to check that item’s available choices in the Locker. If a style is not shown as available, do not assume that it is included, already unlocked, or certain to become available later; the conditions depend on the item.

Style, Series, and rarity are not interchangeable
- Style: An alternate appearance for an individual cosmetic. It may be customizable or unlockable.
- Series: A continuing named label, such as Icon Series or Gaming Legends Series, that helps identify or group cosmetics.
- Old rarity tier: The retired color-and-tag classification previously used to express cosmetic quality.
These terms describe different aspects of an item. A style is about appearance options; a Series is a kind of collection label; and the former rarity tier was a quality category that Epic discontinued. Treating them as synonyms can make item information confusing, especially when an older guide or discussion uses terminology that no longer reflects the current labeling system.
How to see styles included with a pack
Epic’s support instructions for checking styles included with a pack are short: select the item in the Locker and choose Edit. The Edit screen is the place to inspect styles available for that item. Check the specific pack item you want to use rather than assuming that every item in a pack shares the same style options.
- Open the Locker.
- Select the outfit or other included cosmetic whose styles you want to inspect.
- Choose Edit.
- Review the styles shown for that item and select an available variation.
If the screen shows a variation as unavailable or does not show a style you expected, the support guidance establishes where to look, but not a universal unlock method. The style may have item-specific unlock conditions, or it may not be among the styles available for that item. The sources do not establish one general menu path for finding every possible unlock requirement, so check the item’s own information rather than relying on a rule that applies to all cosmetics.

Do styles unlock automatically?
Not necessarily. Epic’s definition includes both customizable and unlockable variations, which means availability can differ from one item to another. A style that is selectable may already be available to you, while another style may require an unlock. The existence of an Edit option does not mean every style is automatically granted or that every possible style is displayed as an available choice.
For a pack, the Locker’s Edit screen answers the immediate question of which styles are available with the selected item. It should not be taken as proof that another style will be awarded later, or that the same unlock conditions apply across outfits, back blings, gliders, and pickaxes. If you are trying to determine whether a specific variation can still be earned, use item-specific official information where it is available; a general explanation of styles cannot establish conditions for every cosmetic.
Can Battle Pass skins return to the Shop?
Epic’s August 7, 2024 announcement changed the stated policy for future Fortnite Battle Pass items: they might be offered for purchase in the Shop at least 18 months after the relevant Battle Pass expires. “Might” is important. Epic says Shop selection depends on multiple factors and does not guarantee that any particular item will return.

The 18-month timing is therefore a minimum point at which future Battle Pass items may be offered under the announced policy, not a countdown after which an item must appear. It also does not establish a return date for a specific outfit. If you are waiting for a particular Battle Pass cosmetic, the policy makes a future Shop appearance possible for items covered by the change, but it is not a promise that the item will be selected.
Availability and included styles are separate questions
Even if an item is offered in the Shop, the number of alternate styles included with it may vary. Epic says a LEGO Style, if the item has one, always comes with the item in the Shop. That specific assurance does not mean every other style from an item’s earlier release will necessarily be included in a later Shop offering.
It helps to separate two decisions: whether the cosmetic itself is offered, and which variations are bundled when it is offered. The future Battle Pass policy addresses the possibility of an item being sold; it does not promise a particular Shop date or guarantee that every original alternate style will be part of a return. Check the item’s listing when it is actually offered instead of assuming that an earlier set of styles will be reproduced exactly.

How ranked cosmetic styles work
Epic Support guidance surfaced for seasonal ranked cosmetic styles says their unlocks are based on the highest rank reached in compatible ranked modes, and that Arena does not count. Mode eligibility can depend on the current season, however, and the available support information does not establish a definitive current list of eligible modes. Do not assume every ranked mode qualifies; consult current official season guidance for the mode list relevant to the cosmetic you are pursuing.
Rank-themed outfits can also have item-specific behavior. Epic Support gives Odyssey, from Chapter 5 Season 2, as an example of an Outfit that displays the highest rank reached in the season the Outfit was obtained. That example describes particular rank-displaying outfits; it is not evidence that all ranked cosmetics update dynamically, or that every style tracks rank in the same way.
A practical approach to a ranked style
- Identify the exact ranked cosmetic and the season or requirement named for it.
- Check current official guidance to confirm which ranked modes count for that season; do not count Arena based on the support guidance described above.
- Distinguish a style unlocked by reaching a rank from an outfit that displays a rank. They are not necessarily the same feature.
- For a rank-displaying outfit, verify whether its displayed rank is tied to a particular season rather than assuming it changes whenever your rank changes.
Is cosmetic rarity the same as island age-rating compatibility?
No. Cosmetic rarity labels and age-rating compatibility are separate subjects. Epic’s November 20, 2023 announcement about cosmetic gating addressed whether cosmetics could be equipped in islands with certain age ratings. It described a small number of existing cosmetics, including fewer than ten Outfits, that would remain playable only in T-rated or regionally equivalent islands. That was a compatibility and age-rating issue, not a rarity category.
The figures in that 2023 announcement are historical context, not a current count of restricted cosmetics. They should not be used to infer what rarity an item has, whether a style is unlocked, or whether a Battle Pass item can return to the Shop. If an item cannot be used in a particular island, that restriction concerns compatibility with the island’s rating rather than the retired color-tier system.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “A skin still has its old rarity, so the old tiers are current.” The old color-and-tag system was retired in v29.20; older references may describe the former system rather than current labels.
- “A Series name is a new rarity tier.” Series labels remain, but they serve a different purpose from the retired quality tiers.
- “Every style comes with the pack automatically.” Styles can be customizable or unlockable, and conditions vary by item. Inspect the specific cosmetic in the Locker.
- “A Battle Pass item will return 18 months after its pass ends.” Epic says future items might be offered at least 18 months after expiration, but no individual return is guaranteed.
- “A returning item always includes every original style.” Epic says the number of alternate styles may vary; the stated Shop assurance is specifically for a LEGO Style if the item has one.
- “Every ranked style uses the same modes and updates the same way.” Mode eligibility is season-specific, and the Odyssey example should not be generalized to all rank-related cosmetics.
What to check when evaluating a cosmetic
For a clear answer about one skin or cosmetic, start with the question you are actually trying to resolve. To identify its label, distinguish any Series name from the retired rarity system. To see its appearance options, select the item in the Locker and open Edit. To understand a ranked unlock, use the current requirement for that specific item and season. To judge whether a past Battle Pass item might be sold, remember that the policy permits a possible future offer but does not promise one.
These checks prevent one kind of item information from being mistaken for another. A style tells you about an appearance variation, not Shop availability. A Series name identifies a continuing named grouping, not quality under the old color system. An island restriction relates to age-rating compatibility, not cosmetic rarity. And a policy allowing possible Battle Pass returns does not settle which styles a future listing will include.
